Got a ticket, what are my options?

Usually a reduction in points requires a higher fine or other fees. That's their incentive for the "bargain"...the time in court for a speeding ticket is pretty much the same either way, it's not like they're avoiding a jury trial...although in NJ it is your right to ask for that.

The incentive in NYS is that the municipality gets to keep the revenues from parking tickets, while a certain amount of money goes to the state if they collect on a speeding ticket.

Maybe that is how it worked for BigJim, also and why they would be willing to plead it to a lower fine, if they get to keep it all.

However, depending on how much his insurance would increase, it may be worth the additional cost. Not sure how to make the necessary calculations, however.

Definently fight it, you can't get your fine increased that way, so there's nothing to lose. The best way to get info on this is to visit here:

It should say what they used as speed measurement on the ticket. The radar detector may not have alerted because the LEO used laser.

Just goto court and ask the DA to reduce it and pay the fine. You will not get any points as it will not be a points violation when he reduces it to a low speed ticket.
