‘Goodbye’ Integra, ‘Hello’ G35 ; a buy/sell story

It all started a couple months ago when I decided to prep my Integra to sell. College was coming to an end and what better way to kick off my professional life than with a new vehicle. First thing was first, sell the Integra.

I wrote and edited personally for about two weeks, off and on. I then had some members from the boards help with it. In the end, I was thrilled with the ad and it really helped gauge an audience. To sum it up, KBB value on the car was about $5k; I had $10k in mods over the years and $2500 in maintenance in the past 10k miles. My selling price was $10,500. I was thrilled and was totally confident that the new buyer was in great hands with this vehicle. The final ad was listed here: http://www.detailingbyexecutive.com/vteg.htm

I ended up delivering the car about three hours away and accepting a certified check. The transaction was smooth and painless. The new owner is a fanatic about cars and has already been sponsored by a detailing product retailer since the purchase . At first I missed the car, but after my new purchase, I haven’t looked back.

Now, when I started my search, I had a couple criteria that I needed met, they included:

- 4-doors
- Sports-sedan performance and stature
- Manual tranny
- RWD or AWD
- Boat loads of amenities

Before this, I was all over the place. I was looking at Porsche 996s one week and WRX STis the next. So when all was said and done, my final three were (in no particular order):

- Volvo S60R
- BMW 330i ZHP (E46)
- Infiniti G35 Sedan

I drove two out of three (not the BM) and my mind was pretty much set. In the end it came down to me getting the Infiniti (new) for $10k cheaper than the new S60R and more optioned out than either.

I whored Edmunds.com every day to peel back the onion on this car. I also began reading over at G35Driver.com. Lastly, I found amazing advice over at CarBuyingTips.com. This website saved me thousands through just becoming an educated consumer and not being pushed around. I was able to feel safe and make accurate purchasing decisions.

So when crunch time came closer, I put the order through for a Diamond Graphite/Graphite, 6MT, Nav/Aero/Premium Sedan. My second choice, if there was no other optioned DG in the country was silver.

To my dismay, they found the Silver one quicker. They got it in and Liz and I were very upset. They didn’t understand how adamant we were about paint colors. She was the one who told them, “We are detailers; paint color is like women having the right shoes for her outfit”. Our disappointment resonated for a couple minutes throughout the entire dealership until the Finance Manager pulled me into the office. He insured me they’d get the car, no matter what. Low and behold, there were 7 of the exact cars on the East Coast, just “Out of the NE Region”. My attitude was pretty much “Tell someone who cares, because I want Diamond Graphite, period”. We calmed down; they put the order through and arranged for a loaner pickup a few days later.

For 2 weeks or so, I tooted around in an ’02 I35 which I detailed once and washed four times. They were ecstatic about the condition upon returning.

The days passed and I finally got the call saying that the car was in. I tried to control my excitement and scheduled an appointment for the next day. From Day 1, they had STRICT guidelines not to wash, detail, or remove ANY of the plastic. In addition, I told them I’d refuse the car if the front plate was drilled. Since this car was fresh off the boat from Japan, I wanted it just like that.

I went in on Wednesday with check in hand. As I mentioned, I got a great deal. The MSRP was $37,820; the invoice was $34,566. I paid $34,600. The key to this, IMO, was being an educated consumer (www.carbuyingtips.com) and using sugar before spice. I wasn’t arrogant and never said “I know you are making money here”. I pushed hard, but not hard enough to turn them to the other side. I schmoozed with the salesman and Finance Manager and built a relationship. I knew and they knew that I was going to get a good deal, but at the end of the day, I would be a very good customer. So, with the special finance rate of 2.95%, I was off and flying. I got bumped to this special rate under a push since my credit was a touch under 700. The Finance Manager made everything happen.

So yes, in the end, I am extremely enthused about this purchase. George Harte Infiniti of West Haven, CT was GREAT. There were a few bumps in the road and they said themselves, “This was the most hiccups we’ve ever had on a delivery”, however, I could accept it; I was being VERY picky. They made everything happen and didn’t think of dropping me on my a$$ for one second.

The car itself is a dream, honestly. I came from an Integra with manual everything. This car does everything on its own. The Navigation pops out from the dash, the Bluetooth option kills the music automatically during phone calls, and the memory settings are great. I really could go on for a while, but I will keep the zealous comments to myself.

So without further a due, I give you my new Infiniti G35 Sedan:

On a final note, I want to thank everyone who I have asked for any sort of help, advice, or guidance about my buy/sell decisions. I feel like I’ve PM’d half the people on the board about their personal vehicles and advice in general. For what it’s worth, I can’t show enough appreciation for your help. Thank you all very much.

Cheers !

Sweet stuff Sean. Sad to hear you haven't driven the 330 ZHP, otherwise you still made a good decision. How do you like the AutoInt stuff? Planning on using the 3 step system for sales.

It's time for paint protection film!

definitely a hot color. Persistance paid off big time. I too told the VW dealer here in NJ not to drill into my bumper for that horrific plate holder when i picked up the car. When i got hte plates the GM said here ya go, no front plates. Yea its not legal, but makes a world of a difference.

Well I like the entire package. I really enjoyed your write up on the process of research, planning, and purchase. There are places and people to help in the purchase of a nice vehicle. I am glad that you are satisfied....Very glad!!

Thanks for the pictures of a very elegant ride which I(we...DetailCity) know it will taken care of as no one else will be able to do. Good luck in your future endeavors. May they excede your expectations.

Nice car you got there. What kind of options did you get with it? It sounds like you did all of your research and made a well informed decision. Congrats!

Sweet Jesus -What a write up, and what a ride!

You just took the phrase 'better than new' and elevated it!

I love the color -inside and out and the wheel package sets that bad boy off.

p.s. - I like the name/avatar change too. Well done!

Enjoy!

That interior layout and color combo is excellent! Your pictures really let us see things through YOUR mind and from what I can tell, you are really happy with this decision.

Congratulations! Like Greg said, can't wait to see her evolve!

That is my dream car. I want the 2-door probably because I'm younger and don't see a family in my future anytime soon (I hope). For your situation this 4-door is perfect though. I've actually got the brochure Infinity sent me for the G35 right in front of me on my desk. It's so tempting.

That is definitely my favorite color on that car. I have no idea why either. Before I saw it on the G35 I didn't really care for similar colors on other cars. Over laser red, and black obsidian, athens blue, some of my favorite colors, I really love that diamond graphite. I guess because it really makes that car look clean and not to flashy.

You'll love that VQ 3.5L. It's by far one of the best engines out there.

Anyway, congratulations on the car and the great deal you got. Try not to get to many tickets with that 6-speed. :D

Infiniti builds a nice car, and I've come around on their exterior styling, but holy hell that interior is putrid. Some people don't seem to mind it, and if you like it, by all means, more power to you. But it looks like it came out of a 1970's leather blender to me.

What specifically don't you like about it? Have you seen it personally? I had my reservations about it, but after seeing it in person several times now, I like it. It has a really clean look to it. The seats are nice and supportive too.

The only things I don't care for are the orange interior lights and how the key is inserted. My mom's Altima has both these things and I really can't stand them. If I do get the G35, I'd probably throw in some white LED's in place of all the orange/amber and just live with the ignition location.

This is one model I was looking at for a purchase next year for the wife. Thanks for the write up and web sites. They will definitely be used in the near future. Congrats.

Thank you very much everyone :).

The Woob: The "New Car Prep" from AutoInt is very good stuff. I was using it in the jams and everything yesterday. I just have to figure out how to get the smell out of my MFs :(. If I can do that, I might add this into my process. It cleans EVERYTHING, and safely at that.

audiboy:

-Premium Package A
-Navigation
-Aero
-Painted Splash Guards
-6MT (comes with Sports Package)
-All Season Mats
-Carpeted Trunk Mat

It's loaded sans wood grain, which I think would look terrible with my color combo.

Cartfan: I was using a .42x Fisheye for the the bowl-effect ones. The others were just my Canon A610. All shots have a polarizing filter used.

MaximaLover: I urge you to check out the 4-dr too :). I looked at the 2-door and while nice, the backseat shouldn't be there, it's not useful. This is my first sedan (3 coupes before this) and I love it thus far. It's nice to be the one driving sometimes. Nobody ever wanted to get in my Integra :D.

heffer: At first I was really turned off by the interior, but then again I was first looking at an 03. The 05/06 is definately better, but what parts turn you off? (just curious)

Thanks again!

Sean, I'm glad to hear you like New Car Prep. It is one of detailing's little "secret products". Don't fret about the smell. The MFs could use a second washing and maybe load up on the vinegar some more in the final rinse. One way or another, the smell will go away.
