FK425 + warm panels = streaks

I am a huge fan of FK425 as my QD, but I have a major issue with it streaking when any panel is remotely warm.

Example: I parked my DD in a parking structure the other day for all of 20 minutes to pick up a few items from a local business and as I made my way out of the parking structure my hood, roof and bootlid were hit with water falling from the upper levels of said parking structure. Being a total Autopian, I exited and immediately hit my hood, roof and bootlid with FK425 to clean up the affected areas. My DD was clean, but when I hit the areas with FK425 to clean them up there was a ton of streaking, especially on my hood since it was still warm from the commute (Note: FK425 applied in the shade).

I have noticed this in the past (FK425 + warm panels = streaks). I eventually had to break out Meg's UQD to clean up the streaks as Meg's UQD is not panel temp sensitive.

Any advice or do I only apply FK425 when the panels are cool?

History: 2005 Carbon Black M3, DWG (x2), CG Jetseal 109 Sealant (x 2) topped with CG Pete's 53 (x2).

I had the same streaking problem and found that mixing the FK425 with about 40/50% water in a different spray bottle eliminated the problem.

I'm sure this takes away from the 425 look, but it looks ok to me and fixes the issue (working one panel at a time) which was a larger concern for me..

Give a small amount a try, i was amazed how much less it streaked even in direct sun.

I can't recall ever using FK425 on a warm panel (at least not an entire panel), but I *have* had it do a rather severe solvent-action to a wax LSP (in my case, 476S).

Even a light spray on a "cool" panel it seems to streak a bit. I'm going to try and dilute it some and see if this helps. It defiantly helped with Z8.

Diluting it just doesnt seem right. You might as well use a non temp sensitive QD like UQD (which isnt a bad QD by any means). I use 425 for its gloss and antistatic properties. I dont see diluting something thats already like 75% water not having any negative effects on those properties that I love so much.

Thanks for the tips/ideas everyone. I usually spray ~ 1/2 a panel and then wipe off. I'll try spraying the MF first (wipe with a 2nd MF) and if that doesn't work I'll give the 50/50 distilled water soultion a shot. Didn't realize I was using too much product, but as with any good product...less is more ;).

Much appreciated.

I just use a light mist and two microfibers. When one starts to feel damp I switch to the other but I never have mixed 425 as have never needed to.

I haven't tried diluting it, if I am working on a warm pannel and I get streaks I just go over it again with 425 to clear it back up. Maybe I will try diluting it.

I bet it'd work OK as long as you don't overdo it. IIRC the stuff they send us is mixed from a concetrate anyhow

Oh I didnt mean it wouldnt work. Im just saying it wouldnt work how I wold expect FK425 to work. Ive never had trouble using Megs QD in the red bottle in the sun on a hot panel, but the reason I dont use that is because it doesnt have the same qualities as FK425.

OID comes as a concentrate and you dilute it down 3:1. Any more and I think you would lose some of its qualities. Thats all Im saying. Why dilute the 425 when he already has a QD thats not temperature sensitive?

^^^ That's what led to my initial question. I had only used Meg's in the red bottle and Meg's UQD and never had a problem with any streaking even when the car sat in the summer sun for hours. That's why the streaking with FK425 threw me.

I prefer FK425 (have a gallon of it), but will also keep a bottle Meg's UQD in the trunk as well to help with any bird bombs, etc that occur when its parked outside in the sun.

Thanks again for the insight everyone.
