FK 425...hmm

"Thirsty" paints (old, neglected, etc.) can have spreadability issues basically with all products. They need more applications.

My paint is less than a year old and I have spreadability issues with 425

initially I did find 425 to be too thick and even using a plush buffing towel I had to do a bit more buffing to even it out.

Then I made two changes.

1. I transferred the 425 from the funny bottle it comes in to an empty bottle of Mother's show time.

(i think that's what its called). Sprayed a very fine even mist.

and

2. (this is the big one) I buffed the car well before applying 425.

I think 425 will enhance a surface that is not even or evenly coated because of its thickness. I found this to be the case with Carnauba like s100. Its kind of like painting

a surface that hasn't been primed and sanded first. The paint isn't going to have smooth finish

Diluting 425 would take away some of its punch. That's why I never use 425 alone, even after a wash. If I want to use one product alone after washing I go for FX100.

But 99% of the time I use 425 with my cleaning qd 146 or with FX100.

p.s.

I always use the non-furry side of a MF towel for 425 or a very tight/short nap towel like the dozen Sonus der wunder polishing towels I have.

It seems to be a nice QD, but I'm not getting the "scream about it" results that others have raved about. The cleaning ability seems quite mild. The appearance is boosted but not dramatically. Slickness is nice, but I can think of slicker QDs...

...

...Adam's DS, Zaino Z6, and Quik Shine all work very well on anything I've used them on.

My thoughts are on par with Zane's. I've sampled some of my friend's supply of 425 a couple of times...decent QD, but I'm not seeing the "wow". I still reach for QS, Z6, or my dilution of NRWS. I will admit though, I probably don't put as much stock into QD'ing as many of you. My neighborhood gets bombed with pollen more so than most and I just don't have the desire to essentially wash my car everytime I want to clean it off...I'll just wait for its biweekly wash.

I thought the latest bandwagon was Duragloss not FK... :p

:lol It'll pass...it always does.

Unique. I never experienced anything like this. On older paints however, I had to apply more of it, as the finish 'slurped' it right 'in'. After 3-4 subsequent layers, the finish was slick, the towel glided like on butter, and even the slight squeakiness was gone.

I like 425 a lot, seems to work really well on the VWs, but I prepare the surface with UPP x3 about 2-3 times a year. Not sure if it makes a difference, but they're garaged as well.

Over the weekend I put 2 layers of UPP over RMG. Yesterday I added some 425 and for me there was a noticeable difference in gloss and shine. I was pleased with the UPP topper, but the 425 just bumped it up that extra notch. This is just my experience with it on a red vw.

(Incidentally, I only did half the car with 425. The other half I applied Z8, just to see if I could notice a difference. I know you can't compare the two, but was just thinking looks-wise after initial application, etc.)

425 is a QD, but leaves a nice glossy shine. And yes, I see the difference. 425 does not have much durability maybe 5 days.

Funny, that when you call FK1 they will claim 30 day protection for #425

I just used some 425 on a bug splat on my headlight...and I got like zero slickness....which is totally different than when I first got it...maybe this stuff ages rapidly? Has a volatile compound in it which is gone? Needs to be shaken up?

The bugs are driving me crazy! They are so attracted to the 425. I got out of the care this morning at work and they rapidly swarmed all over the roof and the hood. Maybe FK is on to controlling the insect population by having them nose dive into the car.

I find 425 slick but Quick Shine, Z6, Sonus Spritz and Wizards Mist and Shine are just a tad slicker IMO.

Sonus Spritz slicker than 425!?

NO POSSIBLE way.

I used Sonus (nuba and acrylic) for a long time and never came close in the slickness department.

425 works well with all my products Fk or not, which seems to be the opposite of what I hear about Zaino.

I'm just not enthusiastic about trying all these different QD's for marginal differnces in slickness and gloss.

But as fro Spray gloss products, I'm still on the hunt for the perfect match on SIlver.

So far:

Mother's FX pretty nicee and easy to get fast!

FK FX 100 very very nice and great price, excellent compatibility/versatility

Duragloss AW on the way...

still open to suggestions, I want to try all the top/compatible sprays before I settle on one and go for the big quantities.

I don't think that QDs change the "look" that much. They add slickness, but IMO the look is more dependent on the polish and wax. That being said, UPPS or DP PSS would probably be excellent choices for silver...but they are substantial products, only for use on perfectly clean paint.

I finally got to try #425, and I must say that it is no better/worse than any of my other gloss QD's. It is very slick indeed, but so are many other gloss QD's out there. In fact, it performs rather similarly to CG Synthetic QD...although #425 may be a slight bit easier to spread.

good use for 425, if none other.

stumbled on this one. Homemade, Cape Cod's Polish, I put some 425 on a new mf. set it on a chair and let it dry overnight. It was late and I just walked away. When I came back, I had a towel with a pink spot in the center. This area behaved similarly to Cape Code Chrome Polish which works well on pulling set stains out of chrome. Which is true, I've used the stuff, they charge you $4 for a few sq. inches of pink 425 smelling quick wipes. So I'm like wow, I can make my own. So anyways, to use: Spray in a little paint cleansing lotion for lube, I used Protect All Polish a little APC. I think I was polishing chrome on my bike at the time, the worn out air cleaner housing to bringing up the reflectivity so the brass blends with what little remaining chrome there is..

Personally, so far, I'm liking #34 better that 425 and Speed Shine, less trailing, but my paint was really rusty and contaminated and uneven on my 05, still is in spots.

Thanks to OCDA (Autopia) I am trying new stuff as I go, staying on the trailing edge of technology. Assuming this means Duragloss. ;)

A little update:

I got to use 425 a little more today. As several have mentioned, it does work very nicely on glass (sprayed on a short-nap MF towel). I also drove through some dusty areas yesterday and the finish is relatively clean, so I guess the "anti-static" claims *may* have some validity.

I still have a couple of ounces and plan to continue evaluating before making a conclusion and review.

Note to self: Wait at least 3 months before I whip out the old credit card and jump on the latest bandwagon. :grinno:

Usually after 3 month's it seem's we onto another product.

Anyway I like FK1 425 , I was a little disappointed in the WOW factor like was talked about , but as I stripped the vehicle of all the other crap and went to FK1 PW and did the whole car it seems better.

I also think like the FK146 alot too.

I also thing that CK QS is a top QD in my opinion and like it better than FK

All I know is that they advertise the antistatic claims and when my car sits in the garage after 425 it attracts dust like crazy. When I use Z8 its almost nothing.

I used FK 425 again yesterday on two cars (one with KSG one with 476S) and I still like this stuff. Unlike EMazda3S I'm finding it slicker than my QuikShine.

Tried a slightly different method with it this time, used some very plush MF mitts instead of my usual MF towels. Seemed to work even easier but they probably absorbed/wasted more product.

I too question how special any of these super-QDs really are, but I do like this stuff.

Heh heh, I'm resisting the urge to try AW :o

Setec Astronomy- How old is your FK 425? Mine's holding up well and I suspect my shop's storage closet gets pretty warm. Some of my older QDs are getting a little "iffy" after sitting around for years...
