Engine cleaning on a unkept dd

I use diluted 50:50 simple green let dwell for a couple min; agitate the worst parts with toothbrush of brush of your choice then rinse well avoiding heavy spray on the critical electrical points. then spray down with WD40. let the WD40 dwell a few while i wash the car and come back and wipe everything down. can also spray down with 303 or whatever dressing you like and wipe down after a wash.

Civicclutch- Hey, nice work.

mikeysentra- I trust you`re using the Simple Green version that`s been tested safe for bare aluminum and not the stuff that [messes] it up so badly that (AFAIK) it`s (still) banned for use on aircraft.

GearHead_1- They make different versions these days due to all the damage that was hurting their reputation.

I know, I still use a couple versions on different projects. I don`t defend it anymore, most won`t believe me.

Yeah it`s the safe for aluminum formula.

Good on you for using the right stuff! Hope I didn`t come across like a [jerk], this topic comes up a lot and too many people, uhm....are on the other side of the fence from Yours Truly.

I`ve yet to try that version, and/but I`m no Hater of Simple Green, just seldom have a need for it and the ancient gallon (of the old/regular version) that I inherited might last me this lifetime.

How do you know which is the "safe for aluminum formula"? I visited their site and didn`t see any mention of aluminum. I`ve used SG for years and really liked it, but I`ve stayed away recently because of all the forum comments about bare aluminum. Has the original stuff been re-formulated or is there a different product than what we usually see on the shelves?

Billy Jack- mikeysentra oughta have the answer, but I`m surprised their website doesn`t make the info obvious...like some reference to use on aircraft or somesuch. IIRC, it`s called something like an "embrittlement" issue. Eh, wish I`d paid closer attention so I`d really know what I`m talking about :o

I`ve got an old gallon too but it just sits for now after I found out the hard way like two years ago bout its hate for aluminum

If you don`t mind, I`m gonna try to remember that you know from the Aluminum Issue first-hand and reference you the next time somebody flames me about it being an Old Wives Tale. Sorry to hear that it happened to you.
