Engine cleaning on a unkept dd

any suggestions here? From my limited experience with Hyper Dressing on tires, it holds onto dirt pretty good.
Depends on the surface. I`m doing well with Sonus` UTTG+ but others find it retains dust. Generally, I go for an LSP-type approach as opposed to a dressing-based approach. I simply *despise* tire/trim dressings, only using Autoglym`s Bumper Care on rare applications that`re really trashed. Dressing = slime IMO :D

Amazing Roll Off mixed with water in a bucket and your plain everyday Terry Cloth works very well. The ARO leaves it`s own protection behind.

davidc- People who use it seem to really like the ARO. And I hear you on using cotton for some things, even in this age of mf.

The total time to do the Subaru was 20 minutes max. And that was done in September 2016 after my son returned to school. I have wiped the engine 1x since then with nothing but onr and it looks just as good as the after pictures. The polish angel engine leaves a protection behind designed for the rigors of the engine compartment

Eh, while I`m all about getting/having/keeping the engine compartments (and undercarriages) of Daily Drivers really *REALLY* nice, I fear my approaches take far to much time/effort to be of any help here.

BUT I will suggest that your LSP be something that won`t retain dust/dirt, a product that dries truly *dry*.

Tornador with your choice of degreaser; 4 rags for wiping grime; 303 AP; 2 towels for dressing. You`ll use less than 12oz of fluid to do the cleaning and expect it to take 20 minutes.

JSFM35X- Gee, sounds like you have that really squared-away!

Wish you guys would quit posting about your satisfaction with that PA stuff though ;)

Adios S6- I do my maintenance cleanups with the Tornador loaded with IUDJ, great for jambs/etc. too.

I`m at the point with detailing that I have 10 go to products I call my top shelf. They are the best products I can find for each job. And I`m always looking to knock on off and replace it with a better product. Better meaning it better fits my own price/performance ratio. I`m willing to spend money to get better performance, looks or Durability within reason. And don`t ask me to define within reason because some of this stufff is gettig crazy on a per oz basis. I don`t do drugs or gamble so this is my vice/hobby.

i don`t own a tornador

Then a bit more elbow grease is in order. I thought I read there was a concern about the amount of water. If that`s the case, then pick up a 1 gallon garden sprayer with the wand.

Spray a section, agitate with soft brush, rinse with garden sprayer, dry with rag. Dress in the same fashion as above. Should use about 32oz of water. It will be a slower process, but still low moisture compared to a pressure washer or garden hose.

Or, if moisture is a major concern, use a solvent-based approach...something like ValuGard`s New Car Prep that`s unlikely to damage anything no matter how you use it. No rinsing required either.

Back in the olden days I used the product named "Gunk". It melted away years of grease and burnt oil deposits. Anyone still using Gunk?

Gunk and Gummout used to keep my 403 engine with Edelbrock manifold and Holley 750 double-pumper spotless "back in the day". It probably also rep-aged hoses, gaskets, and plastics.

That`s what I figured too. If it ate through 20 year old grease it probably wasn`t doing the plastic and rubber parts any good.

Old-school Gunk was available two ways: A ready-to-use aerosol and a concentrate designed to mix with kerosene. The concentrate was likely just some agents to help it rinse clean. Haven`t seen the concentrate in years. We used a lot of it 30 years ago, when we were buying up 70`s Impalas and Caprices to scavenge 400-cube small-blocks for our Sprint Cars. Nowadays, for nasty spots, I use mineral spirits or kerosene to cut the grease. Follow up with Zep Citrus at 4:1 to 10:1, rinse gently and blow dry.

Do you use IUDJ inside your tornador? I`ve always used d114 because I was worried about breathing the fumes from an APC/Degreaser and I wasn`t sure if a rinseless wash with alot of polymer would clog up the tool? I used to just use distilled water but I felt like a squirt of d114 might make it easier to dry without leaving residue and possibly reduce the risk of marring when wiping door jambs with a microfiber towel

Yeah. I do try to not breathe the stuff but I`m not all that paranoid about it (gee, maybe I should be :o ).

So far zero issues with running IUDJ through it, and I don`t empty/clean it between uses either. It might sit in the Tornador for months as it doesn`t use it very quickly.

Gotta say I`m simply *loving* it for the jambs/engine compartments, but remember that mine get done to a real Autopian standard first (then I just maintain them forever, can`t even recall the last time I had to really redo in a huge way). I don`t even have to switch the Tornador to "air only" 100% of the time (but maybe people oughta) as it doesn`t leave too much IUDJ behind and what it does leave flashes off cleanly *most* of the time (but YMMV).

Took me a while to get myself dialed in, and it doesn`t really impress me as a "small area, close range pressure washer" the way I`d hoped, so I still clean any real dirt off with BHBs first, but still...love it and recommend it *as long as people put in the time/thought/effort to get their technique dialed-in*. In that regard it`s kinda like my foamgun/BHB stuff, not something that`ll work great the first however-many times you try it, but worth it in the end IMO.

I don`t think there`s any real health concerns that you should be worried about as long as you are only using a rinseless wash solution in your tornador. The first few times I used it with Optimum Power Clean and there was literally a fog of APC in the garage after just a short amount of use.

I use mine on a daily basis so I usually have to refill it with d114 (sometimes ONR) at 1:258 once a week. But like you, I also leave the solution in at all times. I typically just use reverse osmosis water to dilute all of my detailing chemicals including my rinseless/waterless wash solutions (I had RO installed next to my kitchen faucet just because we have horrible water where I live in kansas city).

I used to just keep plain tap water in my old original tornador and after 4 months the siphon stopped working which i replace but shortly after the the weighted tube that spins at a high speed became completely stopped up with the minerals from the tap water (i assume). Since then, I bought a new one I`ve only used distilled water and 9 months later it is still working like new. That is just my personal experience.

LashingStanley- Thanks for the heads-up about the Tornador not liking [crappy] water, think I`ll stick with distilled.

I have two RO systems for drinking water spigots in my sinks too (home and garage) for the exact same reasons you do...hey, on second thought maybe I`ll mix the Tornador`s IUDJ with RO water and save a few cents.

My weighted pickup tube isn`t as Accumulator-proof as I`d like, seems way too easy to hold it at an angle that it doesn`t like.

So I used 3D grand slam at 1:4 this week on an engine he wasn`t wanting spotless but wanted better than it was as he is selling the truck
