Does Meguiars #9 remove or just cover up swirl marks?

I just got done using this stuff and I am pretty impressed at the job it did. I was just wondering if it really removes them or just covers them up, or both? Thanks for the help.

Hehe, alright heres a couple

Intel486,

Which do you like better for swirls and light scratches, 3M SMR or Meguiars #9? I have SMR but I have not tried #9.

blk96gt,

That is one sweet ride! Black, Stealth and Shiny! :xyxthumbs

Nice car man ;) Mine used to look like that:cool: Any way, in my very limited experience (compared to a lot of folks on here), it depends on the severity of the swirls/scratches. I had LOTS of very fine scratches all over the c-pillars on my car that were painfully visible when I parked in the garage at home, under the flourescent lights. After the PC w/Meg's #9 and a Dawn wash (to make sure they weren't just covered up), they were totally gone. Go for it. You'll be amazed at how good that black Stang will look when you're finished.:up

When I use it it didn't seem to work that well but it left all these oils on the paint. You really had to work it to get rid of them.

Meguiar's #9 is pretty much fool proof.

I guess this is as good of a thread as any to post about my problem with #9..

I had zaino topped with about 2 - 3 layers of s100 on the hood of my black is300. I applied #9 to half of the hood with a foam pad (the ones with the handle made by viking) to see if i could remove the fine scratches. I figured i didnt need to strip the s100 or the zaino, since the #9 would do that for me anyway. Afterwards, I reapplied s100 the the area. This was done in my garage in pretty poor lighting.

This morning under daytime lighting the hood looks smeary/streaky where I had applied #9. It looks to be underneath the wax.. i tried rubbing a finger across it and the smears are not affected.

Is this due to the fact that i had not stripped the surface prior to #9? What should i do to fix this?

When I applied #9 yesterday I did it over about 4 coats of Zaino. After that I used some Z-6 to get any excess #9 that might of still been on there, and I did not have the problem you are talking about. Maybe you just didn't get all the excess #9 off?

Well I can say I've tried alot of stuff now just to get rid of water spots. I can say this, the 3M stuff I used which was the polish/glaze I didn't like because I thought it was too hard to buff off. It also left a greasy residue behind that was hard to get off. They told me to try some other blue stuff called Clear Cut. It was in a galllon jug and he said it would work. Well it cut alright and put more scratches on my clear coat than it took off.

Finally I went and picked up a tube of Meguiar's Scratch X. I tested a small area this evening and it was doing better at removing the spots than anything else I had tried. Is the #9 the samething as the scratch X or is it two different products?

I tried the scratch x before the #9 and the scratch x did a little bit, but not near as much as the #9 did. It also left a residue behind that was really hard to buff off. Maybe I didn't apply it correctly?

If you are going to top #9 with Z, you need to do a dawn wash to remove the oils that #9 leaves BEFORE applying Z. Maybe the Z6 does that, but I am not sure- I was told to dawn wash after #9 before applying the Z.

I have to agree with Intel on this one. I like most of the 3M PI-III series, but I do not like the 3M SMR; just too many oils to deal with. I find the #9 does a decent job on light swirls and seems much easier to remove than SMR.

Just IMHO:o

when you talk about a dawn wash are you talking about the dawn dish detergant. if so i thought you were not suppose to use dish detergant on your paint? no here if its not to obvious. learning as much as i can.

I asked the same question before. And yes they are referring to Dawn dishwashing liquid. However, you're only supposed to add a drop or two so that is dilluted the way I understand it. I'm trying it this weekend. If weather permits.

Do a search on Dawn, or download the ebook, guys. A Dawn wash or 2 a year is not going to hurt your paint, if it's all rinsed off and the paint protected afterwards. It's just a basic cleaning step if you want to strip wax for a total overhaul or for adding a polymer.

thanks for the info guys. :bow

i am finding out alot of useful information here. its interesting to read all this stuff. good stuff to.
