One of the main reason dish soap is regarded as unsafe is that for the general public, they may not realize that by washing with a dish detergent, it removes the wax on the vehicle. So if they don't follow-up the wash with a waxing, then all the protection is gone which over time could lead to clearcoat failure, oxidation etc.
However, with that said. There is some data suggesting even a couple of washes could effect the clear's integrity. Personally, I doubt it but I have chosen to go the path of why risk it.
A carwash soap should be more than enough. Otherwise, I'd use a All Purpose Cleaner diluted to the right concentration for dewaxing. 3M and Meguiars (APC+) make could APC's.
With respect to 3M SMR or Meg No. 9? It's a matter of personal preference. They are both oily. They both mask swirls. Both have their issue's in working with the product.
Both are good products and the results you get you'll probably be happy with.
