Does expensive wax really make a difference?

Do expensive waxes make a difference?

As stated many times in this thread, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Here's the way my eye beholds the beauty of my car. First, I am a carnuba fan. I much prefer the look over sealants. If you like the look of a sealant then you can stop reading this post. Also, I detail only my own car, which is a 2010 MB CL63. I am not a pro detailer but wash my car probably once a week and wax it probably every 3 to 4 weeks.

I am a Zymol fan and have tried Atlantique, Vintage and Royale, their three top-end, ultra-high carnuba waxes. I was about to buy Vintage (about $2k, lifetime supply) because it gave unbelievable depth, shine and clarity to the paint. It also had tremendous beading. After a rain, the car would sometimes be almost as clean as a wash (not including after driving behind another car on the highway!) I am not that concerned with durability because I wax often enough that the wax doesn't fade or wear out. Vintage was, in my opinion, about 98% perfect and paying that much for a lifetime supply was good by me.

Royale (about $8k, lifetime supply) is, in my opinion about 99.5% perfect. Even more depth, clarity and shine, etc. The color of my car is designo graphite, which is a dark metallic gray. Royale makes the metallic flakes in the paint look 3 dimensional. I've never seen any car look better, even after getting detailed by a pro. Is Royale worth the extra $6k for that 1.5% extra perfection? On a cost benefit basis, absolutely not. But I got it anyway and I am very happy with it.

So does expensive was make a difference? I think so. Is it worth it? Only you can decide. Get some samples (Zymol sells sample kits) and decide for yourself!

Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Clause as long as you believe - sorry - it just popped in my head after reading these.

The most expensive wax I use is Wolfgang Fuzion. Really nice depth and wetness but not enough darkening effect on dark colors for my tastes. Looks really good on light to medium metallics and solid red. Otherwise, I reach for my $20 bottle of Carnauba Moose. Amazing wax regardless of price. Excellent depth, makes black look blacker while still looking great on lighter colors and metallics. Durablity is pretty good and I can apply and remove it as easily at 35 degrees as I can on a solid black car on a sunny 100 degree day.

The price for most waxes GENERALLY depends on the quality and % of carnauba it has in it.

The price of most items depends on perceived quality generated by the marketing/hype around it, and the packaging/eye candy that goes into it. However, the value of anything, IMO is a more personal matter. If it appeals to you and is worth it to you, then by all means enjoy it.

I have found that there are many great waxes that will make a difference on a already perfectly polished car. To those Vintage haters, yes it is a nice wax and looks very impressive. I have corrected and polished several Ferrari's in single stage red. Amongst them, I have put down Vintage, Sovern, Migliore Comp. after polishing them to the best of my ability. Vintage had an incredible glow to it. Migliore has a look that is very deep. and crisp. Sovern has a nice candy look to it. Many would not notice the difference. To the trained eye, there is a huge difference. I have noticed huge differences in the protection aspect as well. Migliore sheets water and the other to bead. I prefer a wax that sheets so there is no water spotting issue's I never understood the whole beading thing? IMHO there is a difference!!!

Wish I had a photo of a goldish bronze colored VW Beatle painted by a guy who used to own his own body shop, car painted in his garage.

Seen this car at numerous car shows, it has the best finish and shine of any vehicle at all these shows and everyone else at these meets agrees[well, most of the time].

Not a swirl or blemish, asked him what wax he uses, answer...NONE, never protected with anything, car garaged and never taken out in the rain, BC-CL paint.

Guess this has no meaning to those daily driven cars.
