Do I have to go to the car wash!!!?

My last car I owned was a 6-speed. This was pre-detailing obsession, so I took my car to the car wash every so often. I noticed the stick in the car felt much smoother through the gearbox when I came out of the car wash, but when I started to detail and wash my car later in it's life I stayed kinda sticky....

I assumed it's because the car wash sprays underneath your car with forced nozzles...but correct me if i'm wrong. I just bought a new 2006 A4 6-speed and wondering if I have to take it to the car wash to help clean up the gearbox?

Any advice?

I doubt it, alot of the newer cars have the complete underbody covering to protect the bottom of the vehicle from crap. Something as nice as a new A4, don't worry about cleaning out your gearbox with a $5 car wash

If there comes a time where you feel it is getting sticky there are always fluids to use for lubricating gearboxes and other various parts.

Cleaning the gearbox shouldn't do anything. You probably had a car with exposed linkages and maybe they got filled with caked on dirt or something? I have had 5 cars so far that where manuals, two with exposed linkages, and never had a problem with them getting "sticky" do to being dirty. If you have that problem you might want to upgrade your shifter bushings.

It was a 2002 Ford SVT 6-speed...it died in a rear-ender, but was a decent car. I noticed this a whole lot when I got it cleaned at the car wash, probably did have exposed linkages.

i thought this was ajoke. is this an automated car wash? do they shoot water under the car? when i wash my car. the water is no wher enear the underbody of the car. or near the tranny/enigne.

Yes, i guess i kinda went to a nice one...they had nozzles under at the car went through and called it "Special Underbody Wash" to get salt off during the winter.

I notice this quite a bit too, everything seems a whole lot smoother after I go through a touchless with the underbody spray. Will the detergents used in a touchless carwash strip wax?

I had a 99 Mazda Protege and the bottom link for the shifter was exposed. So much so that you could install a shortshifter in under 30 minutes. A jet of water could easily reach the bushing. I don't know what it is like on an Audi but its probably hidden a little better.

Like I told my wife after I applied the Klasse twins on her car..."Now be careful cause yer gonna be slippin through the air a lot faster now!"

hehe
