Disappointing products

Wolfgang Wheel and Tire Cleaner,

who in the right mind would pay over 20 bucks for a little bottle of Wheel and Tire Cleaner???

Not surprising with some of the mentions on here. Mine are:

[

ClearKote Carnauba Moose Wax- Hated it. Stained my trim bottom of the window. Haven't been able to get it out since.

Meguiars NXT 2.0- Total hype and the most hated product I've ever used. It's hard for me to believe that people actually like this stuff. The spray detailer is even worse.

glad to know i'm not the only one to feel this way about the clearkote product. Nxt is so-so(at best), but definitely not for me. It makes one of my friends terrible paint look OK though.

Diablo wheel cleaner--thought it was ok at first, but compared to CW&C, its actually not as good. It's really expensive for a wheel cleaner that's only so-so. I seriously doubt I'll ever use up my gallon.

Zaino Z2 pro--with all the talk about "Zaino protection" this one fell short for me in preventing serious water-spot problems. Acrylics have done much better.

I'll give you guys my $.02

CCS Smart pads (had 3 pads' foam and velcro separate while buffing)

Griot's Garage Best of show wax (easy to apply and remove, didn't leave me with good results)

Griot's Window Cleaner (It's just like water and leaves windows really streaky

Lots of lemmings equate beading with paint protection. I had issues with water spots and bird bombs and Z-2. I do love how Z-2 looks on silver though.

I'm surprised to see so many over-the-counter crap brands mentioned in this thread.

To me disappointed = overrated, meaning you were expecting great things and were let down. How can you be disappointed in crap?

Were there actually this many people that had high hopes for those cheap "Black Magic, Simoniz, ArmorAll, TurtleWax, etc." $5 products they picked up at Canadian Tire/Autozone/Napa, etc.?

Cheap and/or over-the-counter does not always equate to crap. That's a myth perpetuated on these detailing boards. Sure, there's crap OTC and lots of times you can spot it. But there's also a lot of crap online too, and you only find out it's crap after you've paid quadruple price and another 50% of the product cost for shipping.

Agreed, there are some OTC things that I like much better than anything mail order. Some examples, AA Extreme Tire Gel, Mothers FX tire shine, Megs QID, Collinite 845, Duragloss stuff.

I confess that during the past two years of detailing I have tried to restrict myself to products recommended on forums like Autopia. Hence, I rarely encounter products with which I am terribly disappointed. Most perform as advertised, at least as advertised by users who contribute to Autopia.

But I have to say that I have been disappointed with Megs' Last Touch. I use it regularly as my clay lubricant (1:1) and have no complaints. But I have experienced re-occuring problems with streaking and hazing with Last Touch. This is a problem that has been registered in occasional postings on MOL, and I have tried the proposed solutions. Perhaps the most effective solution is to dilute it 1:1 for ordinary quick detailing, yet this solution does contradict official recommendations. I continue to use LT at full strength for bird bombs, but when I want to quick detail my car, I now usually turn to another product.

I gotta add Megs Ultimate protectant. I was hoping for something that lasts on rubber, very let down, in fact gold class trim detailer seems to be better.

For those in Canada: the Simoniz products. Every item I used was not satisfactory. Cheap... You get what you pay for.

Their microfiber chenille wash mitt passes the CD test, for what it's worth.

Tell me more about the Ultimate Protectant?

I hear on MOL there is a certain application process or else it will not work.

Chemical Guys Stripper Scent (scent doesnt long), Chemical Guys Green Clean and grime reaper (maybe i need to make a stronger solution, doesnt clean that good compared to what the product says)

Poorboys Wheel Sealant....maybe lasted a week for me.

Pinnacle Liquid Souveran....S-T-R-E-A-K

Although a tool and not a product, EZ-Detail brushes.....buy in bulk cause you'll be going through a lot of em at their breakage rate.

Well from what I come to, most of the Meguiar's products you'll find at auto parts store are junk and Simoniz blows...

I think they have the 2nd best OTC clay available, one of the best QDs available, and THE best polishing compounds available OTC (Ultimate Compound / SwirlX) so I'm really not sure what you're talking about here.

I'd say Megs OTC stuff is the best OTC stuff out there. Ultimate Compound, Swirlx, NXT, ColorX, QID, UQW are all class leaders. Sure there is better stuff out there for mail order, but for being off the shelf available everywhere, tough to beat.

^^^^^^^

Meguiars Gold Class Carnauba wax. Shortest lived wax on the market?

Can't be any shorter lived than NXT 2.0 is it?? But to be fair to the NXT, I think the paste is a solid OTC offering. Keyword OTC.

Just wanted to add another flame of Mother's quick detailer. Someone else nailed it on the head. It has some crazy cinnamon scent, but worst of all it is horrible to work with. Dries fast, and streaks so it's practically useless for claying, and if you don't immediately wipe up any overspray while QDing, it will dry and streak as well. Biggest PITA QD I've ever used. The worst part is that I have 3 bottles of the stuff, because I love Mother's clay so I always get the package with the clay, QD, and MF towel

Couldn't agree more. Mothers has some great products but their QD isn't one of them.

I never had those kinds of issues with Showtime (drying, use as clay lube). There must be some other variable between our techniques. I must be doing something wrong (right).
