Hi and thank you for entertaining my frantic call for help.

I am attemting to us PI III machine glaze for the first time. I am using in an attempt to remove swirls without the use of fillers, as found in SMR. My prep is for using Z2 on a Carbon Black M5.

So here is my question and planned routine.

1 DAWN wash

2.Pinnacle poly clay

3. dawn wash ( should I use Z7?)

4. PI III machine glaze, 05937, pc, using yellow CMA pad

5.Z7 wash

6. Z2 etc. yada yad and so on..........

My question is this.

I have average swirls, not to large and not to deep. They are the result of my dealer washing my car, despite my instructions not to. We have all heard similar stories. I want to know does anyone think the PI III will be strong enough ( I usually use PI III rubbing compound followed by SMR) to do the same quality job as my PI III rubbing compound SMR routine? Any advice is much appreciated.

Thanks everyone.

Bruce

I've used just recently my PC and Meg #9 (liked it for its cleaning ability and shine), Meg #2 (did not like it for its tendency to leave buffer marks), Menzerna Twins (IP and FP loved them for their jewel like finish). Even though all are rated at 5 or less on the abrasive charts, I did not find anyone of them too harsh.

P III MG is rated at a 2 so this may not cut it for you if you have average swirls like I had. After all I did over 2 weeks I still have about 5% swirls left on my car. Need a rotary or DACP for the remaining 5% (I think?).

Either way I would give P III MG a try.

I can't believe you were the only response! Lots of

lookers but no feedback? c'mon guys.....

ANYWAY;

You were correct. The PI III MG was not quite strong enough. To make matters worse, my yellow pad flew off the pc and got crud all over it. I had to complete the job with a white pad. I used some PI III rubbing compound to get the heavier swirls. I plan to buff out the haze tomorrow with the MG, then do my Zaino thing.

You said PI III MG is a 2. Would you rate SMR the same?

I really like the MG. It goes on like soft butter, removes very easy and leaves a great shine. Also it should be ideal for Zaino as it does not contain fillers, like SMR.

The compound also was very easy to apply. It leaves a squeaky clean surface. If not for a slight haze I'd go right over it with Z2. My bigggest problem is the PC. It simply is not strong enough for compound work.I really had to lay on it to get the compound to do it's job. I'll move up to a rotory soon. Any suggestions?

As soon as I get my camera back I'll post some pics.

Over the last couple of days, I have been comparing:

1) DACP

2) Mequiar's Premium Paint Cleaner

3) 3M PI III MG

My testing method:

1) I used DACP as the comparison standard in these comparisons.

2) I used a PC set betweem 4 and 5 with a yellow Mequiar's pad dedicated to each product.

3) I applied each product side by side so that each comparison was easy to make.

4) I ran the same number of passes with the PC for each product in muliple directions. 1st pass side to side, 2nd updown, 3rd diagonal, 4th oposite diagonal. I put more product on the pad for each of these initial passes and then buffed out with no additional product on 2 more iterations of the 4 step pass pattern.

5) I tested on my Paradise Blue Civic's Hood and Roof, which had some minor scratches and noticeable, but not severe, swirls and spider webbing, nothing too serious.

First, DACP compared to Mequiar's Premium Paint Cleaner. The DACP removed the scratches and swirl marks completely and removed all but the finest spider webbing (as viewed around the reflection of the sun - man is that ever hard on the eyes!). The DACP also left the finish a deeper colour than the Premium Paint Cleaner. The Premium Paint Cleaner did remove more of the smallest spider webbing (as viewed very close to the reflection of the sun, almost all were gone - seeing even more spots over this one, I’ll wear sunglasses next time.)

Second, DACP and PI III MG. Again, the DACP did a better job of removing the scratches. However, the PI III MG removed all of the spider webbing and swirls! The PI III MG produced the same dark paint colour as the DACP.

Third, being very pleased with the PI III MG I wanted to see if it would remove scratches like those the DACP took out. For this, I set the PC speed slightly higher to between 5 and 6. I increased the number of multi-direction pass iterations to 5. Guess what happened? It removed the scratches, all the spider marks, and all the swirl marks, leaving the finish deep, dark, smooth, and wonderful. I even did something I have never done before. I skipped applying the #9 swirl mark remover.

I really like the PI III MG and am going to use it a whole lot more. The finish on my car before this test was OK and didn't have any thing more than minor and swirl marks so for this application it was great. For anything more severe, I would add the DACP or #2 to the process.

Hope this helps!

All polishes like PI3 and DACP are going to respond differently depending on paint type and condition, as well as all the other variables like pad type and PC speed. That's why all the polish talk has to be taken lightly; make decisions based on what works for YOU. The products I use that work for me may be a total waste for you.

Its all about paint, technique, and product. Too much focus on one area only equals poor results.

Bruce,

The levels of agressiveness of the more common polishes was listed in a post a few weeks ago. I am just repeating what was listed.

SMR was listed as a 5 but I believe most autopians believe it should be a 3 along with Meg SR #9.

I was super impressed with the Menzerna IP (level 5) using PC + Yellow pad. No fillers, no wax, no silicone. What you see is what you get. One teriffic diamond-like finish. It left no haze on my 02 Civic. (May be great for a Zaino prep). Followed this up with Menzerna FP which was just above average in my eyes. Will buy a bottle of 3M PI III Finishing Glaze on MON to add some glaze using PC + Gray pad and then top this off with McCall's Wax. This should produce the best carnauba finish that I have ever achieved on paint.

Give Menzerna a shot. You won't be disappointed.
