Couple Questions About PC Polishing.

One lest question; in another thread I read about the difference between non-dminishing and diminishing polishes and I believe I also read that 105/205 are *NOT* diminishing polishes.

Is this why I see some people counting "passes" and not working the polish until it gets the "Vasaline" look?

That is correct.

Yes, correct again. You stop when you've either corrected the defects or when the carrying agents/lubes/etc. start to dry out.

Since the abrasives never break down/diminish, you need to be a litle careful when buffing away the (still abrasive) M105 residue, that's why I like a little spritz of #34 to help with this. The M205 is mild enough that this is seldom an issue.

Thanks as always for all your good input around here, i'll be doing some GM clear with my PC XP, 4" pads and M105/205 and your advice throughout this thread has been appreciated! :2thumbs:

Good points about the oil residues on M205 and care needed wiping away M105 too!

The micromarring from wiping/etc. M105 will only be visible under "hologram-spotting" conditions, and that might be true of the M205's pseudo-hologram oily effect too. I gotta say that the GM clear on my Yukon is that "sticky" type of paint; it's a *huge* PIA to get all the M205 oils off and if I don't it looks like (very faint) holograms under certain conditions. Drives me nuts when I do that vehicle....

Thread hi-jack but have a quick question. Ill be doing my first paint correction detail on my 01 Black Firebird. Using a PC and 105/205. Do I need a counter weight for the 4" pads? I have 1 counter weight but it says for use with 5" pads only. Thanks!

I prefer the 6" counterweight with all sizes of pads, but NO, it's nothing to worry about.

That "use with 5" pads only" thing is referring to a backing plate with a single sheet of sandpaper on it anyhow...not a foam pad wet with detailing product (remember, the PC is really designed to be a sander, not a car polisher).

Z-5 PRO Show Car Polish for Swirl Marks and Fine Scratches

No its a polish like 205

Z5Pro is a non abrasive sealant. ZPC is an abrasive polish. ZAIO is an extremely mild abrasive sealant.

Alright, I finally took a swing at it...

Glad it's going well.

I think you need to approach the overlapping differently, if only to avoid driving yourself nuts ;)

First, I think you can just quit thinking about it so much! You polish an area..that area is pretty clear in your mind the second you finish it, right? Then do the adjacent area with as little overlap as possible.

To be honest, I don't think I even really (consciously) consider overlap! It just doesn't register as something I give thought to.

This may come as a shock, but that isn't the first time I heard that [about not thinking about it so much]..

Heh heh, I hardly *EVER* worry about somebody overthinking something; IMO it's more likely that people will underthink any given situation. But for once I'm starting to think "paralysis by analysis" even though I usually  every time somebody says that.
