Confused about clays? Not any more!

Detail time!
Budman3's original post was a fine piece of work (worthy of a Sticky). I've cleaned up the original post and placed it here: Clay Bar/Lube Pricing Comparision

http://www.detailcity.org/forums/detailing-clay-and-clay-lubricant/17156-clay-bar-lube-pricing-comparison.html

We've kind of made a mess of Budman's original intent and hard work. I've closed that thread so that this wouldn't happen again and taken the Sticky off of this thread. May it die in peace. Should you find discrepancy that you would like to make Budman3 aware of PM him and he'll let us know what he would like to do with his closed sticky thread.

Let me know what you guys think! I figured that we have all kinds of information on different pads, how to clean carpets, how to use a foam gun and stuff like that but nothing much with clay. So hopefully you won't need to spend hours trying to find out what clay you want to buy anymore. You'll also know what are in different kits and their prices... all in one spot! Enjoy!

From first perusal you have made a terrific looking chart. thanks for your effort.

It is already bookmarked for future reference.

Good post!!!

Nice chart!! I had no idea the TOL clay was so cheap. I just ordered the 4 bars of Pinnacle clay. With my 15% discount (for joining the Autogeek forums), it would move to second cheapest on your list. However, that coupon code expires tonight.

Thanks guys. Let me know if I left anything out or anything like that. I never really looked at clay at TOL until tonight and at $2 and ounce thats pretty good. But it's neat to see how close everything is comparing to the regular prices. With the variation of sizes it was hard to tell if one place was better than another.

AWesome chart. I was like you, I never knew if i was getin a good deal. Looks like top of line and poorboys 3 bars (b/c it comes with lube and micro) has the best deal. I'll remember to stay away from meg's smooth surface, which is what i bought last time. Its good stuff, but compared to the others its priced unreasonaby.... the lube lasted for about 2 cars and im never goin to use the cleaner wax. The micro was nice tho

does top of line come with anything?

nice chart, a mod should make this a sticky.

One thing, the clay magic for 24.95,Where did you get that price at cause i thought it was 21.95 retail.

Great charts and thanks for making them for us. I think the Poorboys 3Clay Bars 32Oz and 3MF is about the best deal going overall. Of course this is strictly my opinion.

Where is the RIGHTLOOK clay Deal i have never even heard of that brand?

PAC has it listed for 24.95 and I think pakshak did as well. Not sure what the actual retail price is from the company.

Rightlook.com is a detail company that sells products and also does training out of San Fransico.

The other great thing is that most of the clay listed can be found at our sponsor's sites and recieve a little discount which can change the pricing. I also agree that the poorboy's deal is a great one. It doesn't look good with those numbers but 3 MFs and 32 oz of S&W is great!!

Great info. One I don't see (and I may just have missed it) is the clay from Detail Plus.

They have 2 x 4 oz pads for $19.95, or if you buy 5 or more packages, they're $9.95 (so 10 x 4 oz pads for $49.75, or $1.24 an oz). I have a bunch of this stuff and it seems to work very well (although all I have to compare it to is Clay Magic, and I'd say it compares well).
For someone that is new to the detailing world:

Hi there.

New member, first post, also new to the whole world of detailing and such.

Looks to be lots of good info here.
You seem to have quite a bit of experience/knowledge about clay and where to buy it. Kind of surprised me that someone "new to the whole world of detailing", would "have a bunch of this stuff", and be able to compare it to other clay products.
Guess maybe you started with clay.

Passing on helpful information is great and is welcome.
Spammers and shills are not.

Not a spammer nor a shill, just someone who ran across that pricing elsewhere and passed it on.

I bought 5 of them because it made more sense to get 10 bars of clay for $50 than 4.

I wouldn't buy anything else from Detail Plus because most of their stuff appears to be junk (which I thought I said in my post above, but evidently did not).

I just like a bargain.

If you'd like to hurl accusations, feel free. But to me, pointing out that clay at $1.24 an oz was left of a list of price breakdowns is simply being helpful, not spamming.

I am, in fact, new to the world of detailing, but I also tend to go all out when I buy supplies for a new project or hobby (hell, when I started snowboarding, I rented one day and bought my own equipment the next to the tune of over $1,000).

I'm also a poster over at Autopia (where if you like you can read about near disasters with my first use of a PC and my shopping for a professional detailer to do my car a few weeks back), where I've posted this deal, along with pricing for stuff from weird places like US Plastics on stuff I thought was reasonably priced.

If that makes me a "shill", so be it.

Tell you what, from now on, I'll refrain from mentioning good deals when I run across them.

I didn't see that in your original post and still don't.

If it is just helpful information, then I apologize.
I definitely thought it interesting that a self described "new to the world of detailing" person was that knowledgeable about clay comparisons.

Charles

Had nothing to do with being knowledgable about clay comparisons. I know nothing about any of the clays on that list, having never used them. I recognize some of the names just because I've seen them while shopping for other stuff (mostly via one of the sponsors of this site) I just glanced quickly down the list and didn't see the brand that I bought so thought I'd mention it.

You'll notice that between the time I posted my reply and the time you were typing your response, I had edited my reply (saying I thought I'd said that about Detail Plus but evidently hadn't).

Anyway, No, I'm not a shill, nor a spammer, nor any expert in any aspect of anything to do with detailing. I just looked at a list, saw a source that I had just used a week ago that wasn't on the list and mentioned it so it can be added.

Hell, until a month ago or so, the closest I came to knowing anything about detailing was that you couldn't trust the teenager at your local tunnel wash with anything resembling a buffer near your car.

He is not the only one who thought this.... I also looked up your posts and I also say you did the same thing on the A site. But I gave you the bennafit of the doubt. Please don't feel unwelcomed. It's just there has been a LOT of shilling going around and we don't like that around here or over on the A site either..

Patrick..

PS good find on the deal.. but if you can't use that much clay then it's not a deal..

PPS I bought my skis before i ever went skiing.. 800 worth so i know where your coming from..
