Collinite: Which product and number of coats?

Read a lot about Collinite products on this site and it seems that #845 is the easiest to apply but #476s/#915 are more durable. However, I also read that using multiple coats of #476s can create holligrams (I presume that this is the case w/ #915 because it is a similiar product).

That said, I am looking for opinions...will 2x of #845 last longer than 1x of #476s or #915? Feel free to chime in on appearance as well (White Paint).

Thanks.

i havent used 476, but 2 coats of 845 will last 4-5 months easily! Very good budget wax IMO.

Its a shame I dont use it as much.

If 476 is applied thinly & in the shade I never got a problem with holograms with 2 coats done a week apart.

I was about to ask the same thing last night but was reading a lot of old threads on this subject.

I am wondering which is better for winter protection in the harsh Chicago winters.

It seems from older threads I was reading it is pretty split on which to use.

i think 845 is a breeze to apply and remove and has great durability. Dont think you can lose with either product. You could also look into FK1000P

I have used both 845 and 476/885 for winter. Two coats of either will last from mid-October through March here in the Northeast, would expect same in Chicago (I lived there for many years). 845 is easier to apply, 476 might last a little longer. I second the suggestion of considering Finish Kare 1000P as well; it not only lasted from last October through April on my MIL's car, central Penna. winter conditions, but looked very good in April. I'm using 1000P on our car for the coming winter.

So does the 476 last just as long as the FK1000p by itself or with the 476/885 combo?

Thanks for the info STS. :xyxthumbs

Thanks for your replies. One additional item for those who have used Collinite...

Does it attract dust like Carnauba can sometimes do?

I haven't noticed more than normal dust with Collinite. Not compared to something like Souveran, which looks great, but is a dust magnet. :chuckle:

After using both 476 and also 845, looks and durability at least on my car and to my eyes are basically the same.

I had 476 on 2 winters ago, and 845 this past winter. Both made it through to the spring.

Since 845 is so much easier to use, it's no question for me, 845 all the way. 476 really put up a fight coming off even with application so light I did it twice. With the 845 I just red foam pad the whole car, wipe it off, and it's ready to go.

Going to try FK1000P this winter just to keep things interesting.

I 476S was on (at least one of) the dog-haulers for years and it always lasted through winter just fine. Sometimes the parts I did with 845 would last that long too, but they always needed redone first.

I get varying durability out of 845. Sometimes a few layers of it will last as long as 476S, but other times it doesn't last long at all, not even as long as #16. Haven't figured out why .It simply *never* lasts long on the A8's rear bumper cover for some reason :nixweiss

I apply one coat of 845, than a coat of 476S. I've finally quit trying to layer 476S because of the pseudo-hologram issue (for that matter, I've pretty much switched to FK1000P over this!), and the links here (to another forum, DC maybe) where the guy tested 915 on silicon wafers seemed to indicate Collinite pastes just doesn't layer the way we'd like to think.

But note that a side-by-side with "layered" 476S and one coat *did* show a clearcut benefit when I tried it. Hey, I can't explain that but I could sure see it. Maybe it was because I did a pseudo-spitshine. But the chance of pseudo-holograms....note that a quick coat of 845 over top of the 476S seems to take care of this problem.

Oh, and I had an awful issue from using FK425 on sorta-fresh 476S; it did a *real* solvent action effect that I never expected. I got away with doing it for a long time before it really bit me (only on one car) and I've been leery of using Fk425 on 476S ever since, once was enough!

Are the solvents in Collinite not the best products to use on modern clearcoats are different products needed.

No need to worry about stuff like that. If anything, today's paints are more resistant to *any* kind of problems than older paints and no solvent in wax/etc. is ever gonna cause any problems anyhow.
