CMA Pads

I'm not sure if this is going to be considered a silly question or now, but I'm willing to face the fire if I have to.

Last year I picked up some foam pads (compound & polish) for my PC, Buffmaster was the brand. The only thing I could get the bad surface scratching off of my F150 with was PI II RC, FI II didn't make a dent. The truck turned out nice, but after reading all of the threads here, I thought FI II would make some type of difference.

I'm thinking about trying the CMA pads that everyone talks about to see if this is my problem, but I'm wondering if they're really worth the money. Does the pad really make that much of a difference or is the PC just not going to create enough heat to really let the FI or PI II do as much as they could?

Thanks in advance,

Darcy

I really like my CMA pads. I am due for a new pad kit soon anyway. I personally used one white polishing pad for over 2 years.

The FI II should made a slight difference. It is really good stuff.

Recently we (Yaz and I) did his Ford F-150 with the PC, CMA white polishing pad, and FI II mixed with a touch of 3M Imperial Microfinishing compound for the first pass, and 3M FI II for a final pass. The results, the light but numerous swirling mostly gone. To detect the light swirls that did remain, you would have to look at an angle in direct sunlight. I just didn't have enough time with the PC and polishing it because Yaz had an oil change appointment. So After washing with Dawn; we started the Zaino process. 3 coats of Zaino Z-5 with ZFX with Z-6 after each coat.

I just have to get the pictures developed.......

I think the PC is a good overall polisher. but a rotary in the hands of a well trained pro can do wonders and exploit the full benefits of the 3M polishes meant for machine use. A part of this is due to the heat generated.

Thanks Jason,

I guess it will be left to 'buy & try'. I'm going to give the CMA pads a try, the yellow cutting, wool levelling and a couple of MF finishing bonnets to make things easier at the end.

I sure hope they are better than what I have now. The swirls in my truck are the 'circular washing' kind and can also be seen at certain angles in bright sunlight. I'd really like to clean those up. If I ever get around to pics of my truck and my wife's Maxima I'll post them and see how they compare to what you were left with for swirls.

One last question for you, how long do you find it takes to completely do a car fender with a pass of FI II? I think I doing something wrong as it can take me as long as 20 mins to do just half of the fender.

Thanks again for your reply.

Your welcome. I am going to get the DAP KIT soon (as soon as Yaz mails me back mine or I get a new one.)

I think thats a bit long. I figure three hours to polish out a car removing almost all if not all of the swirls (Ford F-150.) I figure about 10-15 minutes a panel initially with medium-heavy pressure with the PC at 6 with a white polishing pad for the swirls he had. Then a follow up with 3M FI II and white polsihing pad and medium-light pressure for 5-10 minutes.

I would have to see the condition of teh paint though.....
