I finally got my PC in the mail today:xyxthumbs and decided to go nuts on my friends maaco paint. He did the wet sanding and i used the pc to bring a great finish if i dont say so myself. I used 3m pi2, #9, IHG, and topped with blitz. The orange peel is gone and the car shines like crazy:D. I wish I had b4 and after pics so you could see what a poor job maaco does(no shine:down). I of course used the vast autopian knowledge base to learn my techniques and I want to thank all the gurus here for everthying. You guys rule!

Macco is fixable? Thats a new one for me, around here, the fisheye is so bad from Macco that in the middle of each one there is a rough/coarse dot in the middle of each "eye". Hard to explain but there is also alot of "drops" that run from too much paint and everything else.... our Macco paint jobs are worse than your 3 year old kids finger painting.

<strong class='bbc'>Sounds like an Earl Scheib paint job.

I'll paint any car for $99.95  [/b]</blockquote>
Yeah he will paint it alright......the windows, the bumpers, the trim, and wheels and tires.....everything! Prepping and masking is left up to the customer...........

A muscle car restoration friend of mine refers to "Bubba Pros" paint jobs as "colored sandpaper" because of the dry, total lack of gloss. I personally prefer the custom-paint scalloped look around the trim pieces that appears as the new top coat flys off going down the road because of the inability to sand the old finish closer that 1-2 inches from the trim! To these "paint flingers" credit, I have to commend them for figuring out that there are gobs of people out there that are so cheap that they force themselve to think that a $100 paint job is the same thing as a $1500 paint job.

Let's be fair guys - remember, there are some people who can't afford to spend $1500 on a paint job, or even (gasp!) don't care how good their cars look.

I like to call the latter my neighbors ;) Those people drive the FILTHIEST cars I've ever seen. I wouldn't be surprised if they painted the cars themselves with a paintbrush and some latex.

We use Maaco in Modesto for work trucks and I know several people that have had their personal cars painted there too. They charge $300 dollars which is about a third of what you would have to pay in the Bay Area. Hey they do a pretty good job. If the paint is thrashed on an otherwise good running car a $300 paint job can do wonders to restore an owner's pride in their vehicle. It sure does wonders for thrashed looking work trucks. It also looks 1000% better than primer while someone is saving for a good paint job.

Ok I wouldn't bring the Porsche there but it depends on what someone's goals are for their car.

Don't get me wrong, if I don't have the money I MIGHT go to Macco, if I did I would sand the car down myself, tape it all up and flip the guy and extra 75.00 to take care of the car. When I got it back, I would wet sand it the best I could of layer some sealent on the car and just live with it.

More than likley I wouldn't bring it to Macco in the first place because if I can't get what I want, why am I going to waste 300.00+ on the paint job. I'm giving money away and I'm still not happy. There's no inbetween, either I like the paint job or I don't. I can't live with sub-standard work.

BWAAAAAHA....... you done detailed that "uh oh" special! LOL......

thats cool though........ is that even BC/CC?? or just a bunch of thick BC??

:bounce

Well I think the paintjob cost him around 900 including jambs, etc. He said the clear is mixed(?) in with the paint. It goes without saying that Maaco does a pretty poor job, but with a little hard work you can get some pretty good results :up

Ive heard a bit about Maaco on the Rx7 forum and am really wondering what kind of job they do....I do all my own respraying, someone should put some Maaco pics up :) $300 for a car does sound like a good deal even if its quite messy here and there.

First time user of Meguiar's MF Pad system. Wow...outstanding results!
What should you clean the pads with? I used regular car shampoo. Is it ok to use dawn to clean the pads? The D300 comes out right away and brough the pad back to white. The D301 pad stays a big grayish in color and doesn't come totally out I'm sure because it being wax. I know the D300 pad is clean for the next use but is the D301 pad "clean enough" for next time use? Should you leave them soaking in solution overnight or just clean after using and air dry? Also, must they be totally dry before using again? I know surbuf pads can be rinsed out and used immediately. Thanks Meguiar's for such a great system!

You can use compressed air, disc conditioning brush or a pad washer or just toss them in your washer/dryer ...

Maybe letting the pad soak for a longer period of time could help out.

With D301, I find that if you let the wax 'dry' for a day or two it comes out much much easier. For the finishing pads I usually let them sit for a day (a nice luxury if you have enough) then wash them using Meguiar's Super Degreaser.
