Cleaning Convertible tops

Can I assume that your top is canvas/cloth? I really like the convertible top cleaner that is manufactured by Porsche (it is intended for canvas/cloth tops). I have found it to be gentle yet effective at cleaning. It does not alter the color of the material nor effect the stitching. For general cleaning I like to use a closed-cell sponge, and for any spot type cleaning a soft bristled brush can be used.

Be sure to treat your top once it it completely dry (never fold a top down if it is even slightly damp). A treated top will be far easier to clean in the future as it is better able to repell dirt/stains. :)

I ran a detailing session for a half dozen Boxsters this spring, and everyone agreed that the "Ragtop" brand cleaner and protectant are the best products (better than Porsche). Very easy to use, and the overspray can be removed without too much difficulty (much easier than going the "mask off the car" route).

I use a stiff nylon brush to do the cleaning--lot the foam sit for about ten minutes first. Then get creative with your strokes with the brush. On the Boxster top, a 45 degree angle is super effective to ride the 'grain' of the fabric, but you should also use 90 degree strokes front/back, side/side.

LOTS of coats of sealant are needed to really get that factory fresh repellancy back--I use about a 1/3 of a can per application!

Oh, and never just clean the top and not seal it--it will soak up water like an old pair of jeans! For this reason this is only an annual treatment for me.

Good luck!

I totally agree. I also use the Haartz Ragtopp Protectant ( recommended by GM for their fabric top care... Go to the website for other makes). The canvas top now competes with the Zaino/BF protected finish for beading ability ;). I used the Amazing Rolloff from CMA ( thanks Brad) as a cleaner. Again a very good product. No change in color, except darkening to original black because the dirt was lifted from fabric, it is paint friendly, removed some small sap stains with a soft brush and rinses off and out of fabric quite well. This product is also protectant friendly. :xyxthumbs :wavey
