Claying Source

What I can never figure out is why they dont use clay anymore and it's this elastic garbage instead. I'm sure cost was a factor but why not make a premium product, most all of us would pay more.

I guess that means for us outside the US we may be able to go direct to the Japanese companies which is interesting.

240 grams for $40.50? Yikes, that's silly expensive. Our store sells 207g bars for $19.95 (Purple/Gray) and the 140g yellow bars for $18.

For $40.50 are you getting anything else like a pad and some lube?

your forgetting that im from Canada where everything cost 3X as much!

Shipping to Canada is cheap, parcel post. You can probably safely purchase from any USA store without much trouble. Figure roughly 30% more to ship to Canada. $40.50CDN is still $36.08, so I'd say it's still high for 240g.

You guys all think at the retail end. If merchants can sell a bar of 100gram clay for $6.99, then they can get it for under $3.50, I intend to get my clay for this price or less !

This is the difference between the wholesale world and that of retail. I used to source battery chargers and batteries from overseas for those Mattel kid ride on cars, we got the chargers for 0.75c and the batteries for $3.50, Walmart sells the same charger for $48.00 and the battery for $55.00. Someone somewhere is making 640% profit for those chargers !

I want some cheap clay as well, let us know when you find it.

What merchant is selling clay in the U.S. for $6.99?

Other than a sale now and then, $2 an ounce seems to be where I end up. Detailplus used to do the 5 bars for 9.95 each (8oz) but now I believe it's $14.95. Their website lists the clay twice now. Once at 9.95 and once at 14.95 when you buy 5 or more. I never ordered clay from them though. I used to get TOL. Last clay I bought was $2.13 an ounce shipped (3lbs). I think clay is overpriced. It would be nice to see someone selling bulk. 25lbs at .50-1.00 an ounce would be nice

No offense but I carry a lot of differet clay and none of them I can get for that price. Would be awesome if I could, but I can't. Their is not a big profit margin on clay at all. Clay is one of those accessories you sell in hopes that people will return to buy clay lube and other goods.

However, if you find it that cheap let me know and I will get my clay from you from now on. ;)

After reviewing this thread, I forwarded it to my Auto Magic Distributor. Here's his response:

hey david sorry its taken so long to reply back... it is interresting to read the conversations re; clay magic its always price! remember its how much it makes you not how much it costs you!!! regarding who makes clay AWC has the patent rights for the next few years. enyone who sells clay in any kind of quantity is selling AWC clay or is infringing on their patent rights and as the e- mailer replied AWC will enforce their rights... including and not limited to carbright malco ardex production ect. also.. AWC does not manufactuer this product it is only the distributor with the patent rights. if you are buying clay for 8.00 abar its not the same product, there are a lot of copy cat products out there, many venders have been trying to off there imposter products as a result of the huge lawsuits AWC has been rewarded. look forward to hearing from you or seeing you when you get back to mich.

Not saying this is a cheap place to get clay, but I just looked at the ClayMagic site and their direct retail prices. 100g and a bottle of lube cost $14.66. The same bottle of lube and a 200g bar costs $36.35. So, in their view it pays to buy in smaller quantities. Or maybe the cost difference is all because of the super cool plastic box you get to store the 200g bar.

BTW, I thought I'd mention that in the past I've seen guys here talk about using some type of cheaper clay from a hobby shop, maybe those little colored bars you can bake once you have molded? Maybe I'll give that a try one of these days.

My car's coming back from the body shop in a few days and I expect I'll have to go buy a small quantity of some more aggressive clay to deal with overspray.
