Clay AND #83

You dont need to clay before using #83 but if you feel the paint is not very smooth then clay.

Are you a politician...lol

jk Lowejackson....there is heavy oxidation, fine scratches, etc..

But if I compound won't that remove whatever contaminents there are?

If you glide your fingers on the car and feel bumps on it, I think you should. It is much better to clay before you polish it with 83.

Yeah, generally, claying pulls contamination out of the paint which is different from the way a polish/compound will abrade away both the paint and the contamination. Polishing first can round over contamination, making it harder to clay it off later.

Claying won't do anything for scratches, it should be a basically nonabrasive process.

FWIW, I always clay before I polish.

Excellent explanation....FWIW, from now on I always clay before I polish too. :xyxthumbs

Whilst claying is great, to quote Accumulator from another thread "there is claying and there is claying", once the paint is in good condition you wont need to clay every time you polish.

Well, you won't have to *CLAY* every time, but you might want to do a *very gentle* claying ;) But I realize that my detailing is a little (a lot?) more "clay-centric" than many people's.

Same here. For me it's my "cheap man's wetsanding" I do it so much. I'm scared to wetsand, so I overclay shall we say...
