Chemical Guys clay = Sonus Block clay

Just received an order of the Sonus block clay yesterday and realized that the lettering on the packaging is exactly the same as the lettering found on the CG claybars.

Any thoughts on the grey clays? I typically use Sonus Green clay, but it doesn't seem to remove all contaminants found on the paint.

ALL clay is made by Automagic. Whether you get it from Danase, Autopia, Chemical Guys, Poorboys, ect.... It is all manufactured by the same people. However, there ARE tons of different formulations.

Yes, but it appears that Sonus and CG are using the exact same formulation (look at the printed number on the packaging).

I have no issue with this, and am mainly wondering if anyone has used this clay in either of its sonus or CG branded forms. Seems as if one version of the sonus block was prone to cause marring and I'm wondering if they have switched to a different formulation. IIRC CG switched to this grey clay relatively recently, since they used to have yellow clay on their site last year.

That looks like the newer Sonus gray that people have said mars. The previous version was not as "smooth" in the package and was a little "whiter" (I have both versions, but haven't really used either yet).

Is that why it is so expensive also? How come Automagic has monopoly on clay?

They might be?

I use the Sonus Grey clay all of the time and never experienced marring with mine.

They switched to the grey clay because the yellow clay can no longer be made.

You will have to search for that. There are tons of threads about it. Basically they own the patents and it is all about patent laws.

Yeah, the latest forumulation of this clay (Sonus gray "Block" v3.0) is considerably more aggressive than the previous version (the very *first* version was completely different). So much so that when I first used it I contacted David B. to see if I'd received a bad batch.

V3.0 Sonus gray is the *only* clay that's ever marred paint for me, and I've been claying at nearly every wash since the early '90s when detailing clay first came out. NO, it won't *necessarily, always* mar, but people should be mighty careful with it unless they plan to polish anyhow. The marring does polish out easily.

FWIW this is one clay that's simply too prone to marring for me to use unless I really need an aggressive clay...the regulars here, who have read all of my "proper claying won't mar/clay shouldn't remove LSP/etc., etc." posts, might want to consider the ramifications of my being uneasy regarding this product. I truly wish that David would get something milder the next time he orders up a batch of clay.

Ironic you noticed that, as I noticed the same thing with my Clay Magic kit from autopia cc, and the gray sonus block. They both look identical and have identical numbering on the sides. Can they still be different? It looks like they are the same to me.

The most ironic thing, is that my 2 yr old baggie of Meg's white clay is the best I've used. It's more pliable than sonus or claymagic, or 4*, and seems to work just fine. I just don't know if it's the same one sold in the new meg's packaging these days. Then Meg's has the 2 sep containers of blue and red clay. not sure how those are.

Meguiar's makes their own clay I am pretty positive of that. There are also a few other companies that do too im sure.

They're just like everyone else, they buy they're clay made to their specifications.

I don't think Clay Magic is that expensive? $22 for 200 grams. They don't have the monoply on clay, they have a patent. It's a little different. Monopolies are illegal.

On a side note, I noticed that even the Sonus green will mar the super soft paints with the lightest of rubbing.

Wow, have never had that problem with the sonus green. Only complaints with it is that it tends to break down easily and turn into a sticky muddy mess. I love how gentle it is though.

Just needed something a bit stronger.

The worst clay I've ever used was the red zaino clay. Had significant marring with the zaino clay, and since I was using their entire system, I didn't have polish to remove it.

All the new grey clay is poor quality. Maybe I'm just spolied with the good yellow clay but something has to be done of the grey clay. Automagic owns the patent of ALL detiling clay -- not just a formula so even if you use completely different materials and still call it detailing clay -- AM will sue... So I found a bunch of the good yellow clay and stocked up so Automagic won't be getting any of my money! Atleast until they make GOOD clay again...

Well, I wouldn't go so far as to call it "poor quality", I just think it's mighty aggressive. When I used it on the back sides of my wife's wheels it worked great; when I used it on the M3 it worked great...just that it left all that marring I wasn't expecting.

I suppose the marring is easily corrected using a polish like PO106FF? Was planning on polishing the entire vehicle after claying anyways.

Comparing it to other clays it is, IMO obviously. If a company is going to own a patent on clay they should atleast make something that works well and doesn't marr. It's not like they don't have enough money... Clay that tears, marrs and very hard I would consider poor quality and from my experiences, this is what the grey clay is. I have been told that using the grey clay warm after it has been kneaded a lot helps reduce the marring so maybe there is a learning curve to it? I won't pay $20 for a 200g bar unless the formula changes so it doesn't marr and kneads well.
