car amgnets...are they bad for your paint...?

My neice told me she had heard that car magnets (such as the troops ribbons) are bad for your paint. Someone in the car repair industry told her this but she said it was some time ago. She thought it was because of metallic properties in the paint.

I have been concerned about microscratches or fading, but I only put them on after the magnet has been washed as well as the car, and I relocate them each time.

Has anyone heard of this or can shed light on this? Is it possible that paint in the auto industry has changed and that is no longer the case, or is that just a myth?

Over time UV rays may cause discoloration, and leave a permanent mark.

It will cause marring.

None for me. Not on my paint!

There are, of course, so many other ways to show your support...

I installed and aftermarket XM radio in my wifes car. The antenna is held onto the car by a magnet and there is some minor scratching from the magnet. Seeing as a magnets purpose is to allow it to be taken off, it will have some minor movement that could scratch the paint.

I had a support the troops ribbon on the back of my Silverado before I traded it in. The salesman kept stating what good condition the paint was in. When they pulled the magnet off they wanted to deduct $250 from my trade-in because of the off color mark the magnet had left on the tailgate.

"I don't think so" :nono

The water caught between the magnet and the paint will eventually turn the paint a bit cloudy. Jim touched a bit on this.

However, my girlfriend's Saab (protected with Zaino) had a "Support our Troops" magnet on for a couple months and came off sans damage.

I'm keeping them off for now. I have two "rebuild New Orleans" magnets that I love, but I may just put them on for a day or two after each wash. I am most concerned about the scratching. I have a coat of Klasse AIO, and next major detailing I will have multiple coats of Klasse SG.

I stick them on the tailgate of my Tacoma...

No one commented on the mettalic properties in the paint and the magnets. I guess there was no substance to that theory?

maybe you can put some sort of thin plastic between the magnet and the surface of your car? since the magnet still works through thin things.

I plan to put my favorite NFL team logo magnets on each side of my VW GTI on trips to home games----(1) hr. drive each way.......then remove them. That's 20 (1) hr. trips. I'll make sure each surface is clean and protected. If I get any marring, I'll deal with it. The magnets won't be on the car at any other time, until we go to the playoffs.~!

Cloudy--you're not lying. I let my daughter put her school magnet on my new '06 Accord. In just 5 days, I had permanent water spots underneath it!!! Now I'm scratching my head about how to fix this. :wall
