calling all those who are knowledgable about computers

Don't worry about the lease date, thats a DHCP IP thing (when your computer gets an IP address from the router, the router sets an expiration date on it so that you don't "hog the line"). The expiration date refreshes everytime you connect.

Now that is interesting that your desktop cannot connect directly.. wait.. that won't work.. ^&%$^%$%. DSL requires PPoE authentication. which the router passess... Hmm.. let me think about that one..

Regarding the gateway ip, is it 192.168.1.1? If not, enter that address into the browser, you should get the admin screen. I haven't went into a linksys router in a while.. but try 192.168.1.1/admin

or whatever your ip is.

A little info I may have left out.

While my laptop was rebooting windows after the crash, I went and checked my desktop and WAS ABLE to access the internet. I then closed it out. A little while later I tried the internet again via the desktop and was not able to connect. I called tech support- Verizon, and linksys and between the both I could not access the internet with their help using 192.168...... and so on. Linksys was able to get the lap connected by re-configuring the system.

I find it awful "phishy" both computers went down like that. How do I know for sure if I was hacked?

I'd reboot the router, the modem and the computers. Make sure all the cables rae plugged in securely in the proper places.

If that doesn't work, I'd try <start><run>and type cmd <enter> at the command prompt, type:

ipconfig /release wait until it's done then type ipconfig/renew

Then try to hit the Internet.

If that doesn't work, I'd disconnect the cable that goes from the modem to the router and instead plug it directly into the back of your desktop. This way you're plugged directly into the modem. Try hitting the Internet. If you CAN, something is fishy with the router or you may have a virus.

If you can get to the Internet directly, try running this computer check and then go back to the old setup through the router. http://housecall60.trendmicro.com/en/start_corp.asp?id=scan

Also, try hitting 192.168.1.1 with your laptop and locate the download page on Linkysys website and download the firmware. You may need an update.

I'd also make sure you have an "automatic configuration" checked on your LAN settings on IE if you don't have any manual settings.

I think I'm making sense!

I tried all of that with tech support last night. They seem to think my ethernet card went bad. I'm running out of options. I'm a little nervous about a hack or finding if I have a virus. My desktop is running a virus check right now.

My laptop was repaired, but not the ethernet card (so they tell me that is what seems to be the problem) for my desktop computer. It won't recognize or pull up web sites?? But yes, I can still access the internet via wireless on my laptop with a router if that makes sense. Is it still possible to access wireless internet vis a router on my laptop if the ethernet card is suppossedly (sp) bad on my Desktop??

Oh, I missed the part about a desktop... :-\

If they were good, you wouldn't know. The goal is to protect yourself going forward. Outside the antivirus, I would check for worms and other baddies. do a google for stinger.exe, it should be from mcafee, and run that. Also, I would download something like ad-aware and search-n-destroy to find all the spyware/cookies and such.

There are two ways to get into the house, the front door and the upstairs window. The front door is hard, which is through the router via the internet. The other way is via wireless (upstairs window). The diffence is to get through wirelessly, the hacker needs to be within a stones throw from your house. Hacking through the router is extremely difficult, but can be done from anywhere in the world. (I wouldn't worry too much on hacking though the router). You have to make sure your wireless settings are secure.

The other thing that concerns me is that you said the support people went into your admin configuration, and that you did not go into the admin console via the browser. This sounds like you have remote console turned on, which is bad.

BTW, were you able to get into the admin console with the gateway ip?
