Calling all Canadians - Meguiar's GB

I never noticed that. I'm surprised CT would sell an accessory for a polisher they don't sell and they wouldn't sell accessories for a polisher they do sell. I would ask them but the people at CT don't know jack.
Actually, this store DID have the rotary in stock. I'm not 100% sure it was the matching model, but they had a PC rotary and no orbital in sight.

But yes, CT people do know jack. :p

Got all my pads and the DACP, and also the 6" counterweights. Thanks, Paco. Now all I need is that backing plate....

I'll have to check it out tonight at the Home Depot after work. So this backing plate comes complete in a kit? I couldn't really tell from the picture whether you had to still the velcro on yourself. Does it look and work like the Meguiar's one where you just screw it on? And do they have a 6" one?

I just bought the 5" velcro backing from Home Depot and used the regular 5" sanding pad that came w/ my PC 7424 SP. If you need to buy a sanding pad, it shouldn't cost more than $10 CDN. I didn't see any 6" velcro stickers, but the 5" seems to be the way to go if the meguiars pads are 6" -> 6.5".....gives you a decent buffer zone from the each of the pad to the velcro backing plate. I haven't seen the meguiars backing plate, but I would guess that the DIY version should work the same way.

Just be extra carefull when sticking the velcro backing onto your sanding backing plate.....it's extremely sticky stuff.

Ah...now I get it. I don't have the SP, so no adhesive backing plate. So I need to get the adapter for the sander and then stick the velcro plate to that. Is that correct?

Wheels,

The W64DA's are the velcro backing plate for the Porter Cable DA so there is no need to rush to HD and pick it up. You simply screw it down into where the sanding plate goes and tighten it up. That's it. Then add the pads you are all set.

Don't forget that little grey plastic piece is a space for the handle.

I'm still going with the 3M Hook if I can ever get some time to go to Cmax (hopefully tomorrow AM). Their significantly more but I hope they work better.

The DIY might be a good route. The W64DA comes with a foam layer between the plastic and pads for extra protection in close quarter's.

Paco

What's the status on the backing plate, Paco? If you have them already, I won't bother with the DIY backing plate, but I want to try out these pads this weekend. I have booked a Highlander for Saturday morning.

Let me know about the backing plate and I'll get the money to you ASAP all on one cheque.

Have you seen the porter cable or compatible sanding pad for sale at home depot? The PC7424 I bought from CT only came with the buffing pad, no sanding pad.

As for the 3M hook it, my Napa guy can't fing the part # in his inventory or the 3M catalogue, so until that gets sorted out I'm stuck. If anyone has any info on this part, please pass it along.

Thanks.

I bought my PC 7424SP from Canadian Tire too.....anyways, I think I saw one 5" sanding pad @ Home Depot designed for adhesive sandpaper discs.

Hey guys, if you're looking for 3M Hookit II stuff stop and read the banner on this 3M page!

http://products.mmm.com/us/auto_mar...VVRR65TbeGSLPLPKL4XgeGST1T4S9TCgvGS2QVMPRKLgl

I never could figure out what the difference between Hookit and Hookit II was till now. This might explain why the CMAX guy told Paco it wouldn't work - these are reversed! I take it we intead need plain Hookit parts right? That is, hooks on the backing pad and loops on the sanding/buffing pad right?

Maybe someone should PM Shiny Lil Detlr and ask what colour his backing pad is?

These: http://products.mmm.com/us/auto_mar...3PV6B5BbeGSLPLPKL4XgeGST1T4S9TCgvJ8L94XHB6Rgl

I'm currently writing up a summary post I hope will be more useful.

I'm sorry guys, I should have passed this along sooner. Brian is correct, we need the Hook It, not Hook It II. Here is the link to the Hook It plate that Shiny Lil Detailer is using. I PM'd him last wek about this.http://products.mmm.com/us/auto_mar...PLPKL4XgeGST1T4S9TCgvJ8L94XHB6RglGS1TFGBGK4bl

The problem is, my UAP NAPA guy can't find the part # listed anywhere in the catalogue 3M gave him, or in his online inventory.

Sorry, for lack of a better thread to stick this in, I'll post this here.

If anyone's still looking for a 6" generic backing pad, Canadian Tire sells it in their air tools section. I didn't see one at Home Despot around here. Costs almost $20 and needs a velcro conversion kit, which they also sell in the abrasives section for less than $3. That's 5" size though....

2wheelsx2, I don't know what your backing pad situation is now, but I stopped by Ladner Lordco this weekend and saw generic 5" and 6" non-velcro ones there.

I haven't got the backing plate yet, but Paco tells me it's in the mail. I looked at Home Depot and the ones here didn't have it, as you said.

The Lordco's here in Vancouver have the Meguiar's backing plate, but it's $38!!!

So, for a $13 per plate saving, I can afford to wait.

That's why I stuck with the GB, I was ordering pads for my friend and I, so we ordered 8 pads in total. And with the rate I am going through them, I might have to get more soon. My side detailing business is getting a few referrals now, so I am doing 2 client cars minimum a month, and they are all full blown details. Plus, I do my sister's, my GF, and my car, as I wear out the pads pretty quick.

There's gotta be cheaper place to buy these generic backing pads designed for adhesive sanding paper. Walmart? We've got Revy's here....cdn version of the home depot, but can't remember if they had anything like this. I do recall seeing these backing pads in the $10-15cdn range.

Look what came in the mail this morning from paco.... :D

I called my UAP napa guy again this morning. This time I aksed about the Megs w64-DA. He said that they don't carry that either. He asked me what I was looking for, and I told him I needed a 5 or 6 inch velcro backing plate to fit into my PC. It turns out they do sell the 3M hook it. The problem is, I was quoting the part # for the 5 inch plate(05775), and they don't carry that one. They do however carry the 6 inch plate(05776) for 44 dollars. Yes it's expensive, but we've all come this far, an extra 44 bucks for a backing pad isn't that bad. I'd rather buy that than use a make-shift one I did at home myself.

Just my 2 cents. I hope this info was of use to you guys.
