Brand new BMW, Ultima question

Hi all,

I've been lurking for a while. I took delivery of an arctic metallic 335i yesterday. Drove it straight home and into the garage. No dealer prep was done other than Autoband and removing white factory film.

I have washed, clayed, and rewashed. After removing a few gummy clay marks here and there, I have a completely virgin clear coat. I have been over it with flourescents looking for fine scratches or swirls and find none.

At this point, I would use Ultima Paint Prep, followed by PGP. However, is there really a need to use the paint prep? I don't see one, but the ultima website mentions that the paint prep "readies" the paint for PGP.

Opinions?

Regards,

Pete

Even if I think the paint is clean (ie. new), I still hit it with a paint cleaner. You would be surprised what gunk comes off, even after clay.

I'd use the paint prep. You'd be suprised how even perfect appearing paint can improve with a light polish that further refines the finish.

I also agree with using the PPP. It will only take a few extra minutes to do and the results are appreciable.

Thank you all for your advice.

Being that it is a new car and a pristine clear coat, I elected to NOT use PPP. I see all of your points, and will probably use it next time (3-4 months)

This Ultima stuff is amazing. I just applied the second coat this morning after 12 hours cure time. I've used hardly any of the 4 oz bottle after two coats.

Once you get over the *NEED* to apply as much product as you always have, it is the easiest thing I have ever used. I tested a few areas where I applied what I was sure was too much product, just to see if the streaking would disappear overnight. It did. Of course, arctic metallic paint is a VERY forgiving finish. Even under the flourescents, no streaks.

Pete

Fellow E92 pilot here and congratulations!!! It's a wonderful driving experience. I'll also echo the recommendation of cleaning your paint before the LSP application. Even if it removes just a little amount of crap you know then it's gone.

Enjoy!!!

When I picked up my new E92, I went with Four Star Ultimate Pre-Wax Cleanser to remove whatever dirt was left over from the boat ride.

BMW lays on the cosmoline pretty thick in some places and I went at my door jambs, trunk lid channels and under the hood with AIO and a hand applicator. Every time I pop the hood I see a couple of small spots I missed. Looks like dried Gulden's mustard!

Also, I was somewhat surprised by the very small amount of debris taken off during the initial clay session. They're packed and protected pretty well during transit.

Why did you ask if you should use the paint prep first, then when everyone said to go ahead and use it, did you not use it? Kind of a waste of everyone's time when you ask their opinion and then ignore it. :nixweiss

Lighten the hell up, man; it is an online forum for INFORMATION SHARING. I don't view this as a waste of anyone's time, nor did I ignore the opinions. I simply took a more conservative route than you and others suggested. If you leaving a reply is contingent on me doing exactly what you say, then don't reply. ***?

I don't understand asking everyone's opinion about using a product, getting a unanimous response that you'd get the best results using it, then not doing it, that's all. Sorry if it offends you but I think it was pointless for me to repsond to your thread.

I just took posession of a E93 335 convertible, Sparkling Metallic. I clayed the car and then applied Ultima PG+ and that is it. I too took delivery of the car without the dealer prepping the exterior. I didnt see the cosmoline which was removed at the vehicle processing center. You will not see much raildust or debris on the surface of BMW's. From the factory they go into totally enclosed rail cars to the port and then get put into a closed ship. The car is completely sealed with cosmoline. At the US port it goes through a Vehicle Processing Center (VPC) and through a brushless wash of high temp solvent that gets rid of the cosmoline. The car then gets put into a sealed Bavarian Transport trailer for the trip to your dealer. There is no need for a polish prior to sealing. I only clayed to make me feel better. I used 3M Adhesive remover to remove some tape adhesive that was still on the car around the doors. I purchased from David the Elastofoam system and the PPG+. The car looks great and I am a fanatic. My first polishing when it needs it is going to be with Menzerna Nano Polish that I already purchased. I have the UDM to use with the polish.

Subsequently I purchased four of the Clay blocks that David sells for $38 for 42 dollars for the four of them. Double strength Dawn in water is used for lube.

Anyway, good luck with you car and pm me if you have any questions I can answer.

Bob

The way they transport cars today. A clay and cleaner job should be done. I bought a new Toyota did a palm of your hand check after a wash and it was unbelievable how rough the finish was. Now if you want to seal in the iron dust and other dust and dirt particles in I guess that is your choice. Good luck nice car, you should take real good care of it.
