Boston-area members: Question about fine dining in the area...

The wife and I will be in Boston on our anniversary weekend and I'm trying to line up a nice dinner for us.

I am looking for a fine dining experience with very good food (not narrowed down to any particular type of food really) and a comfortable, relaxing and enjoyable atmosphere (e.g. live piano player in the restaurant and a good view from one's seat, etc).

Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!!

The Oak Room sounds right up your alley it is more traditional in decore and when I have been there they had live jazz palying in the bar area. Place has beautiful wood work through out and the staff is phenominal.

Mortons is also a good choice

I second the Mortons. I have had their food here in Nashville many times and it always a treat to eat there. If there is a Maggianos in the area I would also recommend them. The one here has a live piano player in the bar area which is a nice touch with your loved one. Enjoy!

abe and loius has the best steak i have ever had but the place is not all that nice, I mean they have GREAT food but the atmosphere is ok

Aujowe is very nice another great choice great food and atmosphere

Capital grille is a chain but still very nice

The others i have not been too so I can not comment

First pic of the Oak room is pretty impressive huh?

I wonder if Pat's Pushcart is still around... it was this little hole in the wall in the italian part of town and it was the *best* pasta I've had in my life... it was better than resteraunts that cost 3x as much.

BTW Aujowe (how we say it lol) is on the expensive side but they have the BEST service I have ever had before u even get up they are pulling out the chair and cleaning off your table of crumbs and what not (imo impressive). The best service I have had is them and oak room.

BTW u are making me hungry just booked a dinner cruise on the odyssey tho they are booked all this week i asked for you :-)

I will have to look into that

Thanks for the breakdown. And yes, that first pic of Oak Room is pretty nice looking!

I'll have to see if I can find some reviews or information on it. Thanks for the info, timmah!

The service is noted on Aujowe. Thanks for that info! Also, thanks for checking into the dinner cruise. I should have said this in the beginning, but we will not be up there until Memorial Day weekend...

OAK ROOM!!!! Favorite restaurant of all time. You have to go to the bar there first for their martini's. They are incredible, and huge. Real classy place. Awesome steaks. Everytime I am in Boston, I go to Oak Room for dinner.

Yum! I like this thread. :D

Abe & Louie's is definitely one of the best steak restaurants in the area. I've eaten there many times, but on weekends it's REALLY crowded and it can be a LONG wait for a table.

I haven't ever been to the Oak Room, but I'm going there this Friday night.

L'Espalier is a pretty unbelievable restaurant. It's in what seems to be an old Back Bay brownstone. The dining rooms are very small and the waitstaff is extremely attentive and knowledgeable.

Here are a few other interesting Boston fine dining restaurants to research . . .

Sibling Rivalry

Mistral (I HIGHLY recommend this restaurant)

Radius

I'll post again if I can think of anything else.

Oak Room is really nice, Davio's if you want Italian. If you want to travel up a little more north, there's a place in Middleton that rivals the food at Morton's: Gaven's Steakhouse. Well, it used to, haven't been there in a while, but last I heard the food was superb.

Oh, and not really *fine* dining, but Kelly's Roast Beef can hit the spot (the one in Saugus is easier to get to, but the Revere shop is the original).

Thanks for all the helpful advice!! Keep it coming!! :bow

What I am doing right now is figuring out which of these restaurants are relatively easy to access via the MTBA line that has the Endicott Station stop on it (the easiest one to access for us when we're there).

It appears that a good majority of these appear to be very accessible via the "Back Bay" stop.

I found Mistral (M I S T R A L :: Boston) and it looks pretty nice.

Mistral is on Columbus IIRC. I think you'll find most of the best restaurants in Boston are either in Back Bay or the South End. Our public transportation system in Boston is pretty extensive and I think you'll find that you can get pretty much anywhere in the city on the "T."

The Oak room is great for some martini's. As far as dining experience, I would hit the North End (Italian) and pick from the many great restaurants. Grill 23 is great for a power steak and cigar. Then hit Faniual Hall for some drinks.
