Boston-area members: Question about fine dining in the area...

I second the Mortons. I have had their food here in Nashville many times and it always a treat to eat there. If there is a Maggianos in the area I would also recommend them. The one here has a live piano player in the bar area which is a nice touch with your loved one. Enjoy!

The original Morton's is in Chicago. The restaruant has had high reviews since it opened in 1978.

Well, I ate dinner in the Oak Room last night . . . WOW! Absolutely a fantastic dining experience. It's an absolutely amazing looking room with chandeliers and very intricately decorated walls and ceilings. There's not really a view but there's enough to look at in the room that you don't really need one. The food was absolutely top notch too. For my main course I had a rib-eye steak and it was one of the best I've ever had.

On the way out the Oak Bar was jumping. There was a number of people in there having a good time and a jazz quartet playing.

Glad to hear, Mikey. I've already made a reservation for 2 for the evening of our anniversary at the Oak Room (did it online and had a response within 30 minutes).

Now I just need to figure out what to do either before or after dinner. I was thinking a stroll through the commons or a horse-drawn carriage, etc. I'm trying for big brownie points here! :woot2:

Any ideas on that type of stuff? Our dinner reservation is at 7:00pm. Another thing I need to be absolutely sure of is the train schedules, seeing as that is Memorial Day weekend and they're likely to be running on a holiday schedule. I'll have to look at MBTA's site.

Would love to hear some ideas on before/after dinner activities. Thanks in advance!!

OK, If I'm reading the MBTA's schedule correctly, then the following is correct:

Depart Endicott Station - 5:16pm

Arrive Back Bay Station - 5:33pm

Depart Back Bay Station - 11:25pm

Arrive Endicott Station - 11:41pm

Now, what can we do in and around the Oak Room before and after dinner? I was thinking a stroll through the Commons or the Public Gardens might be neat before dinner and then head to a nearby bar after dinner.

Thoughts?

*EDIT: Just saw that the Museum of Science is within a cab-ride distance (wife loves museums). The only problem I have with that is we will likely be overdressed, since the Oak Room prefers jackets for gentlemen for dinner. It looks like we'll basically have about 1.5 hours before and after dinner to do some things before we have to catch the train. I'm going to have to research this a little more.

A nice, relaxing lounge/club/bar after dinner might be nice, but who knows, dancing may not be out of the question. There have to be a few nice places in the area around the Fairmont for a drink and some nice atmosphere...

The Oak Bar is nice, but there are many many bars, restaurants, and shops in the area. I would suggest either a relaxing cigar at Cigar Masters on Boylston St. or a stroll down Newbury Street which is the upscale shopping district in town. Newbury Street is always a great place for people watching and there are a lot of cafes with outdoor seating.

Can't believe I never updated this thread!!

My wife and I went to the Oak Bar and had a few drinks before dinner, then went and had dinner in the Oak Room. Excellent food, service and atmosphere. Top notch all around. They had a rose for my wife (as I requested) upon arrival and gave us a complimentary Boston Creme Pie (which, I never liked until I had theirs). It was probably a 200 ft walk from the MBTA Back Bay station, so it was also extremely convenient.

My only criticism is that there are not any signs on the sidewalk or out in front of The Fairmont Hotel that indicate that the Oak Room is inside.

I highly recommend the Oak Room for a wondeful evening with someone special!

I am glad that you enjoyed yourself there. It is a real top notch restaurant. Have never heard a bad review of it.

The Oak Room is a great restaurant and the Oak Bar is a great bar (the apps are great there if you didn't have any).

I'm actually getting married next August in that hotel.
