Bored Last Night

I've been reading up and plan to start my first "real" detailing experience with my Porsche (91 911). I'm guessing the car has been maintained by mediocre detail shops because there are some pretty good swirl marks on most body panels when viewed under fluorescent lights. PO's weren't the do-it-yourselfe types. So far I've picked up the following:

PC Buffer

Mothers Clay Magic

3M show car detailing cloth

3M SMR for most of the car (and 3M Perfect It II #39002 for the bad areas)

Pinnacle Souveran Car Wax

Am I missing any steps? Should I be doing something between the SMR and Souveran?? I'm not sure I understand the difference between a sealant, glaze, and wax. Kinda thought these were the same???

I'm also interested in advice on pads for the Polishing. I'm was thinking of wool on the bad spots but not sure about what to use with the SMR....any advice?

Unless you have some experience with machine buffing I would not try the wool pad for your first time. For the bad spots try the Perfect-It II with the cutting pad.

Thats not a bad start, but as you gain more experience you will naturally start experimenting with various products.

additional products i suggest are:

extreme tyre gel - or something of that nature (make sure it is water replant)

pigmented dye wax - i.e myers - it is specially made to match the color of your car and dye it to its orignal state - no other wax so far can do this as well - others have tried like color magic - but that comes no where near to the finish.

metal /chrome polish - specifcally made to bring the lustre back in chrome - i.e autoglym metal polish tube.

I could seemingly make this list endless - i.e for the interior - i collect bentley and rolls royce cars all of which nearly have light stone leather interiors - i use the dual pc buffer to bring a shine that u could never recreate by hand -

p.s leather soaps, conditioners, also are paramount.

good luck bud.

I'm kind of new too... but i would sugest doing the Klasse AIO (All in one) sealent... and Klasse SG, between the swirl mark remover and the wax... that will protect it better as well as cover up some of the swirls and make it look nicer (at least that's how i understand it.. still waiting for my shipment to try it out) both those are availible as a set from CMA for 39.99... or you can get the klasse sample kit from Yosteve's page.

John Ross uses a PC on his Bentley's and RR's leather seats? I thought Ron Ketcham said that was a no-no!

Cybercowboy....so....confused....:nixweiss

Ok so I was really bored last night and decided to continue to work on my moms Solara. It has been run through so many car washes the paint was in really rough shape. It needed some major work and I felt like playing around.

I am not finished, I have only done the driver side and the top of the trunk. Previously I did the hood and driver quarter panel. I still have the roof, passengers side, and back of trunk to do.

I dont have a process because I was trying multiple combinations and everything just to see what worked.

I have to say I fall inlove with my machines more and more each and every time I use them.

This is prior to the wash stage. I used an ONR wash but before I used a pressure sprayer with hot water to spray off the salt and some crud. It actually worked well. I felt like it was too dirty to do ONR at first but after spraying it down I felt comfortable with it.

After spraying it down:

Now we move on to the condition of the paint:

Now I began playing around with my rotary, 3401, and my Megs DA v1 just to have some fun. These are the results.

This is a little out of focus

Here you can see some RIDS and a few touchup spots that someone did. I could probably improve the touchup but it isnt worth it to me right now.

Very well done Jon.
It's nice to see that when you are bored, unlike so many other people, you actually make good use of your time.
Big time improvement.:hurray:

Yeah, the car looks great blah blah blah... I'm more impressed with your collection of pads and gallons of supplies!

Thank you Barry. I try to be productive as much as I can. There is a time for work and then a time to relax.
