Well it looks like Blu-Ray will win (if HDM even survives) but the only 2.0 spec player is the PS3.



Do you have a large DVD collection? What TV will you be watching it on?



HD DVD players are going down in price and are very appealing just as a solid up converting DVD player (not to mention you also receive 7 HD DVD's for free). I would say hold off for now until the Blu-Ray players are fully up to spec.
 
Pretty much Blue Ray has won, I do have a PS3 (80 gig) but no blue ray disc yet. I still have plenty of non hd discs that I watch on a Denon up converter that looks great (32 Samsung HD TV). I'll get some blue rays soon and see what they look like, which I know will look awesome lol.
 
If you really want to get into it, check out this forum. Sort how we are a bit nuts with cars, these guys know their stuff about audio/video. I've been spending a few hours a day there for the last few months figuring out where to go in my upgrade. Now I have a 27" CRT TV hooked up to my home stereo with 2 speakers. So far for the upgrade I bought a PS3 and think I have the TV and surround system nailed down for now. Just need to wait on my tax refund to get the rest.

I personally think the cost of these disks are the reason why no one has been declared the winner. If Blue Ray or HD-DVD would lower the price from $25-$35 a disk to the price of a standard DVD then the first to do so would clearly be the winner. It cost next to nothing to make the disks. So for one to be a clear winner they have to work with the movie companies a lot better than they have. Get every one onboard to lower their prices and the next thing you know DVDs will be phased out. The first to do so ( ether Blue Ray or HD-DVD) will be the one you can bet your money on to be the winner.
 
miahman98 have you done any reading on this? The HD-DVD camp is already dumping the players and every Sunday the sales adds have buy one get one offers. That wont matter as the studios have already spoken. There are *many* more BD players our there than HD units. The movies are for the most part priced at $15-25 with just a little looking. BD simply offers more. Until the US can get some serious internet plumbing done we can forget about the digital download happening *and* getting HD audio *and* video.
 
NOOOOOO! This cant be true. It looks like I can pack up my HD-DVD player. Oh well, I just use it to play standard DVDs anyways. Good thing it was a gift.



Hey SpoiledMan, How about an even trade? My HD-DVD player for your Flex? I will even throw in King Kong.:rofl
 
'The funny thing is that from the get-go, Blue Ray had more problems with disk/player compatibility (and still does) than HD DVD. HD DVD players were also cheaper from the get-go.\r\n\r\nI have not read any review that says one technology beats the other, unless you\'re talking about media capacity (not movie quality).\r\n\r\nI own an HD DVD player and have been pretty happy with it. However, I\'ve always been cautiously optimistic about the technology sticking around and purchased very few DVD\'s (mostly just rented).\r\n\r\nIt appears that if Blu-Ray ends up being the winner, it was mostly a marketing and money win.\r\n\r\nAs much as I wanted HD DVD to win, with Netflix and Walmart dumping HD DVD and rumors that Blockbuster will have Blu-Ray in all stores by the end of 2008, it doesn\'t look good for HD DVD!!!'

Unless I missed something it's Toshiba and Co. that have been pitching money around. Remember the recent Paramount deal? That still didn't work. The PS3 would be the trojan horse that got Blu-Ray to the front. MS should have been so smart as to include the HD drive in the 360.

Sony has spent much much more on marketing and exclusive rights than Toshiba. Sucks that the PS3 is probably the best Blu-Ray player out right now...
 
So Sony did their homework this time and it sucks?? How many times have they lost a format war? What exclusive rights are you talking about? Why is it bad that the PS3 might just be the best player? You sure get a lot for the money if that's the case.
 
when Time /warner announced that they would go with blue-ray, plus WAl -Mart will no longer carry them it pretty much tells its the end of HD-DVD
