BTW-Just picked up Conair & The Rock on B/R @ BB this past weekend for $14.99 ea. Goodfellas was the same price too but already sold out.

I'm glad I waited for the HD war. I still prefer to get a up-convert DVD player since the HD movies cost too much. An up-converted movie on the OPPO player looks satisfactory to me on my 61" 1080i HDTV.

does an upconverting DVD player make much of a difference? my mitsu 1080p DLP upconverts any signal to 1080p, so I've always wondered how much of a difference I'd notice.

I also agree with you that the new HD movies (either format) still costs too much per movie. I'm pretty happy already with DVD quality, so the price premium right now for me doesn't justify the cost. Hopefully the prices for movies will come down significantly.

The OPPO up-converting DVD player does a really great job at up-converting SD DVD to near HD DVD. You'd probably would know the difference if they were side by side. Most good quality up-converting DVD players will do this but the OPPO does a much better job.

Nows the time to grab the HD players if you want one, rumor has it they are slashing the prices as low as 80 bucks.

Why? The movies will all be old news in a few months.

Because the Toshiba HD DVD players are some of the better SD DVD up-converters on the market for the price. They up-convert much better than the typical ones you find in Wal-Marts, Best-Buys, etc. The only other better up-scaler would be the OPPO line, but that one costs twice the price. SD DVD movies are half the price of HD DVD & BluRay and you would have a hard time telling the difference on a HD DVD player up-scaled to 1080i/p.

Upscaled is upscaled, period. I bought a lil $36 phillips sd dvd player from wallmart for my bedroom 42" lcd and I promise you if you were watching it, you would not know the difference. I own a Panasonic BR player for our 50" plasma in the l/r and sometimes I really question why I spend the extra money has compared to the picture the lil Phillips has, really. But the b/r is better. and for the record its not the name of the player that counts for upconversion, its the processor inside, fajodroua (sp?) is the one to get...

You can spend a whole bunch of time readin up on upconversion dvd players @
