Blasted orange peel!

Okay, I'm almost done. Haven't had much time lately, but I managed to get the top done. Only panels I have left are the passenger side doors and the driver side fender.

What originally causes oragne peel?

When looking to buy a new car from a deal lot, would it be a good idea to inspect each car, and have that be a deciding factor on which car you choose?

BTW Great thread, and the Mercedes now looks amazing!

Nice work. As for Ford having bad orange peel, I will have to disagree, at least with my car, it is pretty OP free. It all depends on the plant it comes from ... at least from what I have seen. I did an 00 Mustang that had horrid OP, but my 02 Taurus is pretty good, I can post pics if you want.

man reading this thread itempted me into wetsanding. However i still have some questions.

I have an 02 black rsx. and I sanded a tiny square with 3M 2000 grit paper with soapy water. However my PC and SSR 2.5 could not remove the scratches. just made them shinier as people have stated. Im in the process of getting a new bumper, so this will be my practice pallet.

I just ordered some meguiars 3000 uni-grit paper. as you guys seem to think this will be easier to remove with my PC.

Is SSR2.5 strong enough with my pc and Sonus pads. yellow cutting, white polishing. blue finishing pad to remove the marks from the 3000 grit paper.

what other polishes will i need in order to ensure a perfect outcome.

it's sort of an unavoidable consequence of the painting process. i think nearly all cars have orangepeel straight out of the booth. there are ways to minimize it, but i don't think anyone shoots paint completely flat. just watch shows like overhaulin' or american hotrod. those guys are tops in their field for painting and nearly every one of their cars gets colorsanded out before they're done. you probably wouldn't notice and appreciable difference between one car or another on a dealer's lot since they're all painted by robots and basically all of the steps are duplicated as nearly as possible.

there's also been speculation that car manufacturers don't mind having orange peel in their paint so much because it covers up any minor defects that would otherwise be a bit more obvious.

Removed 2000 grit wetsanding marks from black paint with PC; 2 passes of ssr2.5 and yellow edge2000 WW pad, followed up with white polishing pad and FPII and it's perfect
