Blasted orange peel!

this is turning into a great thread...keep up w/ the pics!! that is actually truly amazing....and from a 1st timer!! awesome.

I recently (and 1st time) wet sanded a portion of my personal car where there was clearcoat failure...I just basically did the same thing, and after the 3M RC, it looked awesome. problem is, it looks better than the REST of the car!!

I've been looking forward to the results. I'm with the others, Polish it! Polish it!

How many hours in so far?

See? It's not so tough if you go slow and steady. Remember, use the 1500 to take down ALL of the orange peel. The 2000, 2500 or 3000 is used to remove the marring/scratches from the coarser grit. That will make it MUCH easier to polish out. If you end up using the 2500 or 3000 as a last step, you'll have no problem getting a great finish with the pc versus needing a rotary.

That will probably be a little safer too. Just remember though, wool pad, cutting pad, polish pad will blow your mind. You'll truly have a show car finish!

Got the hood sanded down to 2000. Need to pick up some 2500 up tomorrow.

Can anybody recommend, based on the level of sanding scratches I have, what pads/compounds I should buff the scratches out with? I think I should use a cutting pad with some medium cut, but this might also require a wool pad with heavy cut.

Should I just buy the medium cut and cutting pad (as I'll need them anyways to get the heavy cut marks out) and see if that works, or will I REALLY need to get the wool pad and heavy cut?

The try a medium cutting pad, followed by a polishing pad, then glazing. If the medium can't cut it step up to a wool pad and then work your way back down again. I'm sure with some patience it will turn out great. :)

Just like I said up top... Just remember though, wool pad, cutting pad, polish pad will blow your mind. You'll truly have a show car finish!

3M Heavy Cut, Medium Cut then Machine Polish. Wool, cutting, polishing pads. Trust me here. If you start lighter with the cutting pad and medium cut compound, you'll have nice shiny scratches. If you're finishing with 2500, you MAY get away with not using the wool pad, but try a section first and see if your scratches are gone.

I'll pick some 3000 grit up tonight, as well as a cutting pad and some medium cut. I'll see where that takes me. If I need the wool, the detailing supply shop is only two miles away.

How many times have you sanded this panel? If you've used 1500, 2000, and 2500, I'd recommend quitting there, especially if you don't know how much clear is on there.

At this point, you're better off using a wool pad than sanding yet again just so you can use the foam pad. Of course, while any pad will take off some paint, even the wool pad will take less off than the 3000 paper.

Trunk and hood are complete. Used my rotary with a meg's cutting pad + 3M MEDIUM CUT 39001, some Meg's #2, and then used a finishing pad with some #7.

Now it's time to sand the sides and top. Ugh.

:bow:bow Awesome thread! Great progress!

My Lexus is soo getting wetsanded now. A combination of this thread and a rotary on the way pushed me over the edge- I'm doing it.

You got off a little luckier than I did in one aspect of orange peel. You have a normal orange peel pattern. The driver's side door of my car was scratched by the first owner against a door, and it looks like the Lexus dealer used a paint brush to reapply the paint. Great color match, but there's no reflection in that one spot.

This really is a fascinating thread. Thanks for taking the time to take pictures at the various stages. You took an intimidating process and made it seem almost simple. The post-Zymol pics look great - nice work! :2thumbs:

man that looks great!! with patience and time, i can do the same for my MR2... it needs a good wetsanding after the repaint as well!

This is just plain sick :bow :bow

I wish I had the money for getting all those materials. I'm finding it hard to spend the money on some pakshaks and zaino. also I'm a bit scared to do this on a new car paint.
