Black porsche Cayenne 800 miles >me *56K* LOL

EBPcivicsi

GOT PREP?
This is the Porsche from the thread on Thursday. For those of you who didn’t read it, here is the story.

Basically a guy orders a black Porsche cayenne, dealer says they have one with 800 miles that is just like new. The customer says great, they do the deal. The vehicle actually had to be transferred from another dealership. When the vehicle arrives the clean-up guys buff it, then they take it to have the wheels repaired (apparently they were curbed a bit). While driving back from having the wheels repaired, it rained, they washed it when they returned. The following is how the paint looked after they washed it.

After the customer saw the car in full sun he was irate!!! They then called me and wanted it buffed THAT NIGHT (Thursday). So I worked from around 6:00 p.m. until around 2:30 a.m. I then slept until around 6:00 a.m. and delivered the car at 7:30 a.m.

Now I will give it to them, the paint was soft, but not that soft. It was so soft that my normal Meguiars 80’s series would marr the finish. It didn’t matter if it was applied via PC or rotary neither #83 nor #80 would leave a ready for wax finish. In fact, both casued very bad micromarring. Now this was new for me, typically I go straight to them and THEY WORK!!! For this paint, something else would have to be used for final polishing.

At one point or another I tried : HT LC, HT MC, HT EC, HT HC, #80, #82,#83, #84, #85, #5, 1Z MP, AIO, 3M PI-III MG, 3M PI-II MG, Meguiars GC prep and swirl reducer, UPC, SR1, SSR2, SSR2.5, PB’s PP, and a host of LSP’s.

In the end, this is what worked.

S&W (they washed before I picked it up, not sure if that was a favor or not)

Meguiars #85 Diamond cut with a twisted wool pad @1700 RPM’s

Meguiars #83 DACP via rotary with polishing pad @1000 RPM’s

3M PI-III MG (THANK GOD for this product, it was the ONLY product that would remove the haze left from the DACP without further micromarring, I will NEVER be without it) via cyclo with green polishing pads

1Z MP via PC and a finishing pad@3

Meguiars GC (new formula)

OCW

To say that this experience was unique would be an understatement. I loved the challenge and wouldn’t trade the experience for anything.

The detail manager called me around noon Friday to tell me that the customer was delighted, this was the biggest thrill for me!!!

Looking forward to the afters if there are any, please tell me there are. :D

edit: hmm the afters didn't come up when I first saw the thread but now I see them. Great job on that one man.

holy sheeet -- you've got some major skills.

I have been reading this forum for 6 months, but I never post -- until now, I just cannot believe what an incredible transformation you performed.

I sure wished you lived here in LA -- I'd stop working on my own cars and have you do it instead.

Good heavens, that really *IS* bad!!

You're really becoming the "master of the wool pads for the first step" huh? What didn't work with the HT products? I would've expected one of them to work as well as the #85. And did you do only one pass with both the #85 and the #83? Questions, questions but I'm curious about how you fixed such a mess.

Interesting that you needed the MG/05937 to dehaze it...funny about the apparently different clears that are being used on Porsche/Audis these days. Also interesting that while you needed to use the 05937 instead of (wild guess) #80 you didn't need something milder than the green Cyclo pads. You've given me a lot to ponder with this one!

If you like the 05937 that much (I do too!) you'd better buy a few gallons while you still can. I have a gallon (pn 05938) stashed away and you do more polishing in a week than I do in a year!

You've just gotta post some after-pics! I want to see how it looked after the MG/MP.

AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!! Dude, I swear you're a serious glutton for punishment with these "one-foot-in-the-grave" black vehicles! I don't think I could take as many of those jobs as you seem to get. EXCELLENT work on that Porsche. :faint:

It seems incredible to me that you tried that many products and got marring from all of them. I'm especially shocked that 82 wouldn't leave you marring-free; I've never dealt with paint quite that soft. Being unable to finish with 80 wouldn't have suprised me much, but not even 82.... wow that's soft.

At the compounding step, the #85 with the wool pad left less hazing than the HT EC or HT HC. After seeing all of the micromarring in my test spot, I figured better go with the 85.

And yes, just one pass with #85 with a twisted wool pad, then one pass with DACP w/ a polishing pad. After that the *only* product that would remove the marring WITHOUT micromarring of its' own, was the PI-III MG. I have *never* been let down by speedglaze, but I guess there is a first time for everything. :)

I will be ordering a gallon this week!!!! My quart will not last long, used it again on a solstice today. :)

Are the afters not showing?

THANKS!!!!

Is it being discontinued? (VOC issues?) I better stop by my local Finishmaster and pick some up to try; they usually stock a ton of the 3M product line.

I'm going to have some polishing to do on my rear bumper now, too; got a nasty gouge from a cargo loading incident with a friend of mine today :sadpace:

Thanks man, and WELCOME!!!

Shinylildetailer, I know you posted something, but I cannot view it. My diplay shows post 10, then jumps to 12, skipping your #11???

Anyone know why? You are certainly not on my ingnore list. :)

EDIT** Actually I can't see post 9 or 11. Anyone know why it does that?

Sick work Joe! Great job as usual and props for going late into the night and still achieving those stellar results.

When you say "one pass" of #85, what exactly do you mean? Just going left to right once and then wipe off? Basically, what I mean is, what constitutes "one pass?"

How fast do you move the buffer and how much pressure do you apply with the #85?

Thanks.

Absolutely amazing transformation! It's almost beyond words. I guess the dealership really loves you for saving them on this one!

Just in case you didn't glean this from Accumulator's post, this product has been discontinued (since Jan 1 2005, IIRC), so he was suggesting you stock up if you still can.

Wow great job!

What kind of effect will all that polishing have on the clear coat? Will that severely diminish the clearcoat?

I may be drinking now, but all I am thinking are of words that would look like this ******* *******...

You keep outdoing yourself!

The befores, total hack...No question about it. The afters, absolutely stunning!

Joe, pat yourself on the back and have a drink for me tonite...you deserve it!
