Got a message from a fellow member that had just picked up a new Subaru STi in my favorite color. He wanted to get his car cleaned up and sealed as well as learn how to wash it so that he didn't put more swirls/scratches in it. There's nothing like an owner that has genuine interest in keeping their car looking it's best.

My thoughts prior to seeing this car were that it couldn't be that bad as it was new(not much more than 1k miles) and he's only washed it once.

So much for that! It was obvious that the dealer had "detailed" it prior to delivery and that his washing wasn't so much the problem after all. This was going to require two steps of polishing to truly make it look like a new car. By the time I finished it was also obvious that lighting wasn't going to let me get any decent after shots:

So I came back 10 days later for a wash:

All dry! Man does this car ever hold a ton of water in the cracks and crevices. There much have been a quart of water in the rear spoiler alone! The paint was slick and shedding water like crazy.

The badging that could be removed was removed by myself and the owner.

Paint was lightly compounded with LC Foamed Wool and IP on the rotary. Polished with 106ff/5" orange pad and UDM. Cleaned and prepped for PGP with PPP using a white finishing pad on the UDM and then sealed with PGP. Tires were dressed with Hyper Dressing 2.5:1.

My best attempt at a sun shot. The sun kept coming and going and was more often than not also partially covered by clouds. Trust when I say that the paint on this car is right!:)

The red Cadi that can be seen in the background pics will be up for a refreshing in the coming weeks. It should make for some pretty good before and after shots.

Thanks for looking and post away any questions you might have.

Awesome correction and sexy black STi, great shine and wetness you did to it!

Thanks! In those 10 days between the detail and the wash, he got the windows tinted and the wheels powder coated. He has a nice HP goal as well.:D

Z, because of all the humps/curves, plastic/metal panels/parts on this car as well as a reputation for thin paint I wanted to finish easy. That combo was the first I tried for finishing and it worked so I stayed with it.

Thank you! It is great to be able to see thinking process behind it.

:)

There's so little room to polish some areas of this car that it requires some improvising. I had to use 106ff and the orange pad and a few tries to get the spoiler, trunk lid and hood scoop corrected and finished. Being plastic, likely having thin paint and just not having much room made using the rotary on these an iffy proposition.

Looks great. I as well was surprised to hear orange pad and 106FF. Personally I cant stand those cars. I cannot believe that that car looked that bad after only 1k miles. How long did the whole job take?

Thanks Ryan. ;) I think the reason it looked so bad was the result of the dealer prep (I use that term loosely) than anything the owner had done to it as the shot below shows buffer trails. This paint corrects like putting a hot knife through warm butter but did have RIDS that made the wool step necessary. I spent about 10 hours total on it.

Nice work. I am surprised others haven't tried 106ff on an orange; I do it quite a bit. Glad it worked for you.

Thank you.:)

I was surprised by the combo actually. The paint corrects sooo easy on that car that I kind of expected a bit of hazing. I'm thinking that the orange pad just does a very good job of breaking down the abrasives in the 106ff that it finishes out really well. I also only had to use a couple of very small dots of polish.

Yep, that's my experience too - orange/106ff finishes well on soft paint; sometimes it's almost as if the white pad is so soft it sort of irritates the paint or something. Actually on a repainted vette I was doing recently I was all annoyed I couldn't finish clean then 106ff/orange @ likw 1600 rpm did it. Weird, but who am I to argue? Either way, the sti looks great. :)

Great job, done right!

owner should known better not to let them touch it

One time my dealer washed my M6 when it was in for oil service,

guess what, they paid for a full detail job because of it, $400!

Interesting about 106+orange for LSP ready finish on soft paint, I got the same

paint issue being soft, I wonder if it will work for me :)

Thanks Harry. I advised him to invest in a grease pencil so that when he does take it to the dealer that he can write on the windows "do not wash" and hopefully that will help. I don't think he had them to do any work nor did he know better.

Its nice when you do a vehicle and know that the owner is going to do everything possible to keep it in that perfect shape. I did a Ford Excursion for a guy this week and I must have just buffed that thing for over 8 hours. Deep down I know that he is going to keep washing it crappy and by next spring he will need it done again *sigh* Oh well, earns me more money I guess.

Isnt it amazing how different paints can be by OEM?
