Best product for moderate swirl removal by hand?

I have an '89 CRX Si with Red paint...not in the greatest of shape. It's swirled up pretty good, so I'm just trying to find a product that will do a good job (BY HAND) with the swirls and oxidation.

DACP, Meg's SR, SSR2, suggestions?

Thanks!

Alex

I would try DACP if you have Popeye arms, but #9 if you are a regular human being. Swirl Removal by hand is not for the faint of heart. I tried for about 6 months on my car, and gave up and got a PC.

Yeah, DACP or Fine Cut Cleaner. You need the product to help since your arm can't do all the work. Machines allow you to use less aggressive product but hand work means you need more "bite".

I'd do Fine Cut followed by SMR by hand. Both are readily available in stores.

Heh heh, Popeye arms for DACP is right, as you have to break it down. You can easily wear yourself out trying to remove marring with mild products, but you'll only get mediocre results. I'd go with Bret's suggestion and use some kind of fine cut.

Meguiar's #1 is a popular one, but I myself prefer 1Z's and 3M's stuff, especially by hand. I find that 3M's fine Rubbing Compounds (PI-III pn 05933 or the slightly more aggressive PI-II pn 39002) work well by hand and are *NOT* too aggressive. Both are available at shops that supply auto paint/body places, just check the yellow pages. Maybe follow them up with something like the PI-III MG (pn 05937), it works fine by hand.

If you don't mind ordering something online, the 1Z polishes- Ultra Polish (yellow can), followed by Paint Polish (green can), are quite user-friendly.

Whatever you use, plan to work small areas and to do it in stages. Doing it by hand really is a monumental task, even on something as small as your CRX.

6 months straight 2wheelsx2? Sorry, had to say it :D :D

I tried doing it by hand with 0 results. PC with meguiar's fine cut and medium cut should help.

Thanks for all the suggestions, guys!

I'd love to do it with a PC, but I'm hesitant about spending the $ on one right now - although I'm sure the results would be much better and would take less time to achieve!

Okay, so DACP + PC is probably necessary for the red CRX with all the swirls.

Now about my NEW car, Titanium Silver Mazdaspeed Protege:

I'd like to use AIO + UPP for the durability factor, and possibly top it with some carnauba-based wax for depth (P21S or the Blitz I have...).

The question I have is this: For the few small scuffs and scratches on the roof and hood of the car, what product will bring me the best results by hand? Possibly Meg's SFP? (I tried 3M SMR and it didn't do a thing at all, since you have to work it so hard to get results.)

Thanks again,

Alex

Quik89si- Heh heh, once again, you've got a job ahead of you, but at least it's a small area. The silver paint (well, the clearcoat) on our '02 MPV is HARD, as in I haven't had to polish it yet, it just doesn't mar! The SFP will PROBABLY be a little too mild for the Mazda clear, at least by hand. SFP is sorta just a "#9 for clearcoats".

If *I* were gonna start from scratch (oops, pun) with a Mazda, I'd get the 1Z Ultra Polish and Paint Polish, otherwise the same recommendations as given for your CRX will apply here as well. Different paint and problem, so different reasons *WHY*, but same products. The Scratch-X is another good suggestion. But honestly, I'd go with 1Z. I think you'd be VERY glad you did.

On our MPV, I use AIO + SG (maybe up to 5 layers!) instead of P UPP (which I just LOVE on my silver S8) for the durability. IMO, SG beats P UPP durability-wise, hands down, and I think it "layers" better. When I top it, I use Meg's #16. It looks ALMOST as good as P21S on Mazda silver, but it lasts a LOT longer. And it's VERY affordable and easy to use. "Self-cleaning" in the rain, too, even in the winter. One can would last MANY years.
