Best light to veiw swirls?

Hi everyone,

I'm new here but have been into detailing cars for many years.

I will be removing dealer installed swirls on my Absolutely Red Lexus soon. I read elsewhere that the best light to veiw swirls is flourescents but I find sunlight to show them better. I will be working in my garage for this project and want to know what you have found to be the best indoor lighting to veiw swirl marks.

I use a 500W halogen, but IMO nothing can hide from bright sunlight.

I like high wattage halogens and sunlight for dark colors. For light colors, I prefer a hand held flourescent trouble light. the sodium lights at gas stations are nice for either dark or light colors.
 
parking lots use high pressure sodiums but i still dont think they put out the same light as the sun, i dont think anything does.
 
Thanks everybody for the ideas. I guess I have to do some testing in the garage: 500W halogen or fluerescent worklight are my choices for now.

Anyone try high output LED lighting?

Only if they have a Touring session for the event. I haven't looked at the schedule yet for this year, but last year they had three events with touring sessions.

Anyway, I'm definately up for it. Are there other Autopia members in the area?
 
Im on the other side of the lake in west Michigan.. :bawling: Why did I have to be born in Michigan, why couldn't I live down the road from DavidB and all the tech sessions :bawling: DavidB will you adopt some of us mid-west autopians :)

Last year when I was there for the Ferrari/Maserati event, they had people taking laps around the track with their cars. I think the cost was $50 to drive the track during intermission?



There are a couple Autopians in the Milwaukee area, a couple in the Manitowoc area, and a couple in the Lake Winnebago area. Lots of members around Chicago.

Actually there are these light's called "full spectrum" which are so named because they emitt all the colors found in the spectrum. Just like sunlight.



You'll usually find them in high end art galleries, stores, any anywhere else they want you to see things as you would in the sunlight. Some bodyshops use them to get perfect color matching and blends.



All that being said, they are extermely pricey from what I was able to find on google but I have some links just in case.

Not sure it's pure white light. Here is a link from a company in my neck of the woods that has info on it.

I was on the track in the touring group for the international challange event last year. We should definately get a meet together... but wait till at least April when I'll have my car on the road again.
