before after rotary hologram

the car is back ford fiesta. I used 1z Paint Polish (green can) and a cutting foam pad (do not ask what pad exactly as I do not know I have bought them through ebay with my polisher)

before

after

As it is obvious I have make some holograms. A milder polish and pad will remove them? (like 1z metalic polish)

Here I want to mention that:

1) I started polishing about 600-900rpm (in order to cover the area) and then go to 1000-1500 and finish in that speed (until the product got almost clear)

2) A month ago I had polished by hand the whole hood with PP and then I also had holograms (especially in the sun)

Is it possible to create holograms by hand?

By the two photos what do you believe I created the holograms with my crappy skills or they where there already?

Not to make fun but i find it funny how people use a cutting pad with their rotary and then wonder why they are getting halograms.

By hand? not a chance IMO

Deathlok- You might try *not* speeding up the rotary until the abrasives have broken down. The guys at 1Z told me their stuff needs lower speeds than most products because the abrasives break down too fast. But anyhow...

I'd follow up with PP and the PC myself, then give it a final buff with the MP. Coupe's right about how aggressive pads will often do this, so I'd back down to a milder pad too. Can't tell for sure, but I bet they came from the pad and your technique...no biggie IMO just use the PC/polishing pad/PP then PC/polishing or finishing pad/MP and it oughta be fine.

Nah, you werent getting holograms by hand, something else went wrong. Hmm...I'm not used to people having problems with PP and this has me  Wild guess is that you didn't break down the PP completely before buffing it off or maybe you just needed a follow-up with the MP; PP doesn't *always* finish out OK on some paints.

To get something straight....I am pretty happy with the result :P. I have some holograms but...:

1) It is not my car :P (it is my moms car. Until recently she was washing it with dishwasher and scotch brite :P)

2) I prefer holograms to swirl marks (of course I want to see how bad the holograms are tomorrow with some sunlight to be sure on that)

3) I am completely noob so I do not expect result like the one I see in this forum.

unfortunately I do not own a PC (I live in Europe so it cost too much). I try probably next month PP milder pad and lower speed in the half hood and in the other half MP milder pad lower speed and see what happens. If both fail I use some autoglym super resin polish ( It always saves the day as it cover with fillers almost everything :P)

Also about the pad. The polisher came with five pads. I used the second one starting from the most aggressive. So I assume it is a cutting pad

Thx for help.

In the before photo do you think that the paint finish is hologram free? (I am not sure about it)

deathlok- Can't really say about that "before" pic.

Oh, and IMO the 1Z MP does just about as much concealing as SRP, but that's just in my experience...

I bet a milder pad will do wonders, especially with the MP.

Ok I managed to get rid of the holograms. I polished by hand (I am very good at it) with 1z metallic polish, then apply collinite 845 and no more holograms. I may have only hide them (as both 1z and collinite contains fillers etc) but now the hood of fiesta looks just right.

i have this problem as well, i went over my whole hood with OC and orange @1400rpm (like directed) then ran OP with a gray pad @900rpm, i did 1 pass OC and one pass OP and still had some holograms then i did another pass of OP @1000rpm and then i couldnt tell because the sun disappeared for the rest of the day and wont be back until mid week (rain and snow in the forecast lol hence why i didnt do the whole car)

Would i bet better off using OP with a white pad instead of gray as a final polishing step or should i stick with the gray pad?

1 The other side of my hood i didnt touch, cleaned and here is the before

2 how much OP i used

3 What i ended up causing

4 Still a little swirly

5 After OC@ 1400 and 1 pass of OP @900 rpm this is the slight grams i had left

6 Here it is after another pass of OP @1000rpm and a coat of poliseal

Here some pics maybe i can get some tips and tricks

bluej511- I'm not the world's greatest Rotary-Meister, and I suspect somebody else can say exactly what caused the holograms. But FWIW, I've never been able to get the exact finish I want with the rotary and OP so I follow up with something else using the PC/Cyclo. It's simple enough to go over the vehicle once that way...assuming you *have* a PC/Cyclo.

I wonder if somebody's gonna say "that's still too much OP" :nixweiss

Wonder if the holograms would've been as bad had you used a figure-8 motion instead of the linear strokes :nixweiss

nah i dont have a PC but if i can get it done with a rotary then i wont get a PC but if i cant then im gonna have to invest in one.

It might have been idk, im guessing that if i break down the polish longer that i wont get any holograms? but it seems to take a while and never break down, i think at one point it actually dried up lol

I dont use near that much product once the pad is primed. Try stepping the pad down a notch too. IIRC, orange is their light cut pad. Try following that up with a white polishing pad and see how that does for ya. Less product and less agressive pad, and I think you'll have it.

well my car is pretty swirled up its an 02 with 128k miles daily driven thru 2 NE winters.

So start with orange and use less polish? there brand new so they still need to be primed lol.

So go from orange to white instead of orange to gray? i appreciate the help guys, im practicing on my own car first before doing friends/family/customers.

The car has gotten so bad it more then likely will be painted in the summer.

I think white is their polishing pad. I know it is on the VC pads I use on my PC. Sometimes you will get some marring or holograms left over from using a harsher product/pad combo. If you are using a "cutting" pad as you are with the orange, you'll want to follow that up with a less aggressive combo, and sometimes I'll even follow that up with an even less agressive one (finishing pad and finishing polish). My process has been the same for the last few details....OP mixed with Hi Temp Extreme Cut on a light or medium cut (havent needed any more that that) pad, then OP on a polishing pad, then Poli Seal via PC and a polishing pad.

FWIW I can't get a perfect finish with OP and the rotary. Not that I've tried it all that often and I guess you can't generalize about every paint...but I'd consider a milder polish on a finishing pad.

But I'd use this as an excuse to buy a Cyclo ;)

perfect finish meaning gloss/wetness or your just leaving holograms with the rotary?

im not spending any more money on a machine especially if i can do it with this one lol.

Like i said i've got no sun to check but next time instead of going orange>gray im gonna try orange>white and see if the holograms dissapear

Both actually, but I was thinking mainly of the holograms in this case. That was with a LC white pad on the E36 M3. When I used OP on an Audi by PC it just didn't give me the gloss/wetness/etc. I was after, but that didn't surprise me as even Menzerna FPII doesn't quite do it for me on that car.

I wouldn't get to insistent on doing it all by rotary...some very experienced/good pros (e.g., Mike Phillips of Meguiar's) still do the final polish by PC.
