BAD UDM PROBLEMS-vid inside

Well upon its SECOND use, I was detailing a friends car and while first applying some polish my UDM crapped out on me within 5 minutes of first turning it on. I first started noticing symptoms as if the UDM were powered by weak batteries. It would seem that at some points the motor sounded like it was losing power. Sure enough a few minutes later the machine turned off completely and would not turn on. I would have to somewhat shake it or tap it on the back and it would turn on again but would turn off by itself shorty after. Mabey I should have just stuck with my porter cable instead, this will DEFINITELY be going back for warranty work.:grrr

It has a manufacture date of 5-1-07 and has the new switch upgrade.

The same exact thing happened to me. Their warranty claim service is great. Lynn Phillips handled mine. I think that she said that she would be on vacation this week.

They will send out a new UDM right away and then issue a call tag so that UPS picks up the broken one. I started a thread called UDM Warranty, praising their service.

As far as the hardware, I did not like losing the UDM, but as long as they replace it, that would be fine with me. I just hope that this second one works like it should. I also hope that it does not crap out on me after working well for a year. Since the same thing happened to you I am starting to question the quaility of the this last batch of UDMs. I got mine in September 07 after I gave my PC to a friend of mine.

After taking the backing plate off it says it has a manufactured date of 5-1-2007. I purchased this back on October 7. Its good to hear that you got great customer service, I can only hope I get the same.

eMail David or Lynn, prolly get a quicker response from Lynn. Within 6 hours I got an eMail back from them a new one shipped and a return pick up tag issued. Dont sweat it, they stand behind their products.

WOW!! That is not very good quality control. Mine had a manufacture date of May 07 also. Maybe is was a bad batch. Hopefully the new ones that we get will have the switch upgrade on them also.

I personally think it is an issue with the brushes in the motor assembly. I have taken the brushes out of mine(when it acts up like that) and cleaned off the glazing on them and put them back in and it will run great again, but only for so long.

I have also noticed while doing this that one brush is wearing significantly faster than the other. I am not sure if that is in the design or if it is a defect.

Well crap right after I order mine all these motors burning up--What is the problem with these things, any clue???

I have read about and heard about so many issues with the UDM that I opted to just get the Griot's buffer. I am not a pro detailer and will only be doing my Porsche and BMW a few times a year and the Griot's should work just fine...plus they have a lifetime warranty and customer service is great. Good luck with your UDM issues...I'd rather have the PC or Flex if I was a pro in business.

If you were a pro you would likely be using a rotary.

Personally I dont think that just because a few of us have minor issues would be a reason to not buy one. Their warrenty is really good along with their customer service. They definately take care of their customers.

Having used both the PC and the UDM, I would much rather have the smoother running UDM and the risk of a minor issue (that I know will get taken care of if it occurs) than use the PC that has a lot more vibrations.

UDM has sure turned out to be a shoddy product thus far given all the hype. This is not the only board I have read threads on major UDM problems and I'm not talking just one or two complaints. I would stick with the PC.
