8:15 Flash Gordon

Sweet!

8:16 mikenap

Hi Alex

8:16 Hoytman

Hello Mr. Hahn!

8:16 darkonion

I'll start, How does one best optimize the Rupes 21mm??

8:16 boredstudent

Hi Mike

8:16 Nanolex US

hello all

8:16 gofast908z

washer mod FTW

8:16 mikenap

Washer mod, first of all

8:16 C. Charles Hahn

Hey Hoytman, long time no see!

8:16 Kevin Brown

I know, but I was once told that I could not get them because there was already dealers there. But then on FB, I saw a guy saying he was getting his through Todd, so I asked why can't I get them?

8:17 darkonion

That is, are there any common mistakes we need to be aware of while operating the machine

8:17 boredstudent

lol KB

8:17 mikenap

Watch out for the deathgrip Velcro...it can kill pads

8:17 Paul Sparks

Yep

8:17 Nanolex US

Anyone use the Spotless machine

8:18 gofast908z

work those pads of the velcro....gently

8:18 Hoytman

Yeah...no kiddin'. Been missin' some of you guys. Paul invited me over sometime ago, but I always forget. Just happened on it tonight.

8:18 Kevin Brown

http://www.autopia.org....html

8:18 darkonion

Solution for the deathgrip velcro?

8:18 C. Charles Hahn

Speaking of the velcro, what exactly IS the difference between the blue and grey-backed backing plates from Rupes?

8:18 mikenap

exactly. start at a corner and work your way around.

8:18 Kevin Brown

darkonion and charles... there are more hooks on the blue, and they have a slightly different profile.

8:19 Paul Sparks

Great thread for info

8:19 mikenap

Isn't blue the standard one?

8:20 darkonion

Do I need the gray backing plate, or is the blue one fine?

8:20 And do you have a solution for the trigger lock?

8:20 mikenap

Barry!

8:20 Greg Nichols

oh damn barrys here

8:20 hybridhacker

BB in the house!

8:21 C. Charles Hahn

Gotcha. Both of mine are blue.

8:21 mikenap

I think the trigger lock issue is more just getting used to it.

8:21 Kevin Brown

It is now. From what I heard (Greg)... Marco changed the Velcro because he knew we were using the spacer and he anticipated pads flinging from the plate

8:21 Flash Gordon

hey barry theal!

8:21 Ben@Autopia

The Prez is here, all hail

8:21 Greg Nichols

that is correct KB.....that is the sense I got from them

8:21 Paul Sparks

Hey Barry

8:21 Kevin Brown

Originally, BigFoots came with the 981.320 plate: http://www.buffdaddy.c...1.320

8:21 Barry Theal

Whats going on all?

8:22 Greg Nichols

grumpy!

8:22 Kevin Brown

Did you see the photos of the trigger lock?

8:22 Barry Theal

Kevin so what are the future plans for buffdaddy.com

8:22 Flash Gordon

i think marco is jealous of you

8:22 Ron Ketcham

made it back from the trim restoration delivery.

8:22 boredstudent

what photos of trigger lock?

8:22 Barry Theal

Hello everyone

8:22 C. Charles Hahn

Good timing Ron

8:23 darkonion

i haven't seen the picture of the trigger lock

8:23 Greg Nichols

hey ya barry and ron

8:23 Paul Sparks

Kevin was just talking about the velcro on the Rupes

8:23 Ron Ketcham

hello everyone, Kevin welcome to the asylum.

8:23 Kevin Brown

I'm a point-n-shoot kind of guy, Barry. I take all my orders from Ben. We agreed that I wouldn't sell 3D because it would then be obvious that I wanted working alone...

8:23 hybridhacker

Buggy Barry

8:23 Nanolex US

Barry is a celeb here, lol

8:23 Hoytman

I'm a newb here. LOL!

8:24 Flash Gordon

barry = legend

8:24 Ron Ketcham

A very nice turn out for Kevin's discussion.

8:24 Kevin Brown

Thanks, Ron, you've been keeping everyone on the straight and narrow, squashing hype?

8:24 CONCOURS.JOHN

My main question parameters CFM and Pressure to keep the LHR75 most effective. Want one but want to make sure compressor will keep up.

8:24 Flash Gordon

where is rasky, snowed in?

8:25 Greg Nichols

KB= EF hutton when he talks people listen

8:25 rasky is doing a hybrid detail and chatting

8:25 Barry Theal

Rasky, I wonder where that knuckle head is?

8:25 Greg Nichols

8:25 Barry Theal

lol

8:25 mikenap

lol

8:25 Barry Theal

lmao

8:25 Kevin Brown

trigger lock pics: http://www.autopia.org...33453

8:25 boredstudent

lol...rasky too busy enjoying himself while wife is away...=)

8:25 Greg Nichols

later rasky will have to take some time for the photoshop work needed to show that detail

8:26 hybridhacker

LHR75 is an air hog but man does it rock!

8:26 Ron Ketcham

Kevin, through your efforts, a new and welcomed interest in the use of dual actions have been reborn. Would you care to elaborate on that a bit?

8:26 CONCOURS.JOHN

Wrong site for that

8:26 Paul Sparks

Does any kind of lube help brake the trigger lock in or aid it's operation ?

8:26 Kevin Brown

John, you've very likely got WAY more experience with compressors that I do. That being said, I can use my LHR75 with my 25 gallon Craftsman compressor without an issue. However- it is a two-stage unit.

8:27 CONCOURS.JOHN

gotcha

8:27 hybridhacker

What CFM is your Comp KB?

8:27 Kevin Brown

hybridhacker: http://community.craft...views

8:28 John, the shop you work out of has a large compressor, correct?

8:29 CONCOURS.JOHN

I downgraded from a 3phase 200psi 20cfm temendously

8:29 tank was 150 gal

8:30 Barry Theal

Kevin after all the Rupes craze that you created is there one product or tool that you use and carry, that is a goto tool for a detailer? For example a denibber or something that isn't talked about much?

8:30 hybridhacker

Don't see CFM specs but I'll check it out later. Thanks!

8:30 Ron Ketcham

That good air storage, I guess with that 20 cfm and 200 line pressure you had a really good, high quality regulator.

8:31 Flash Gordon

good question barry!
C:\Users\ben\AppData\Local\Temp\msohtmlclip1\01\clip_image001.gif

8:32 Kevin Brown

Ron, thanks, but I think part of the reason the random orbital has become popular is simply because through the forums, a few guys really tried to achieve a better result, gave the machine a "fair shot" so to speak.

Certainly, I did try to provide some information as to how to do this.

But really, with the advent of thinner pads and discs came the ability for the machines motion to be more perfectly transferred through the pad.

Then BAM! A compound revolution took place.

8:32 mikenap

I haven't heard much about the Rupes polishes. Can you give any info about those?

8:32 Hoytman

HaHA...BAM...Where's Emeril?

8:33 Flash Gordon

good question mikenap! i was wondering the same

8:33 Nanolex US

Is the Rupes so much better that it's time to dump my porter cable.

8:33 Ron Ketcham

At first I didn't "grasp" that simple change you introduced, and yet when thinking it though, it made sense, thinner pad with the correct pad material will allow for a product to be more effective in it's intended use.

8:33 Kevin Brown

Barry, I still use a rotary, a "typical" random orbital, and when air is available, I bring along various tools.

8:34 Flash Gordon

this screen is super small

8:34 mikenap

popout button, Flash

8:34 Ron Ketcham

The use of the "thinner" yet correct pad, allows the actions of the dual action to be more effective.

8:34 Greg Nichols

flash use the pop out icon on the top

8:34 hybridhacker

I'll ask the one question that has been asked a million times now....any side by side comparisons with the 3401 yet?

8:34 Perfections

Kevin, Ive been a long time rotary user, then swapped to d/a then flex 3401. Most people I talk 2 dislike the flex, but i actually like it. Would buying the rupes speed things up over the flex on big flat surfaces? What about finishing down ability compared to flex?

8:34 CONCOURS.JOHN

It was from a machine shop. compressor seized and was sold not long after I opened. 400 for new compressor It was 4 outlet 4 regulator but quiet.

8:34 Flash Gordon

holy cow!!! thanks greg nichols!!!!!

8:35 mikenap

Compared to a Flex, the Rupes is smoother, quieter and easier to handle.

8:35 Flash Gordon

you to mikenap!!!!!

8:35 mikenap

8:35 Flash Gordon

much better

8:36 CONCOURS.JOHN

yes Rupes is very smooth have LHR15

8:36 darkonion

Hybrid, I have both, Rupes is much better.

8:36 mikenap

Can't really one-hand operate a Flex...

8:36 Nanolex US

Then i'll have to get one.

8:36 Barry Theal

Hell with a rupes you can operate while sending text messages! lol

8:37 gofast908z

Jose was walking his on a leash (the cord) one handed. Name one other machine that can do that!

8:37 C. Charles Hahn

Anybody tried swapping the cord on the Rupes to a more flexible one yet?

8:37 hybridhacker

LMAO, Barry

8:37 gofast908z

ditto on that Charlie....cord has rigor mortis

8:37 darkonion

Nanolex, I'd get the Rupes if I could justify the price. At MSRP of $400 or something...

8:37 Perfections

Mike, thanks for your input and i understand that to be the case from people Ive talked 2. But im concerned with speed. If im able to do better correction work in less time, thats my goal

8:37 CONCOURS.JOHN

Next on my list Charles.

8:37 Kevin Brown

Rupes gels... I think that if you only had those in your arsenal, you could achieve a very good result. I have not "pushed" those liquids to anywhere near the level I have with something like M105.

I use M105 likely for a thousand hours (or close to it) prior to its release. I learned a LOT by using only ONE capable liquid.... how to optimize cutting AND finishing ability.

I think they are very good, but I don't think they're at a level that will make any one of them a "class leader". I suggest trying the 8.45 ounce bottles, as they are not all that expensive. YOu'd probably end up using up the bottles, too, because they are very good.

8:37 Flash Gordon

hate to sound stupid amongst all you gurus, but what is the difference between the 15 and 21? Is one meant for 5" pads and the other for 6"? surely there is more then that

8:37 Nanolex US

U mean multi task while buffing, haha

8:37 Greg Nichols

I've spoken with Marco RUPES about this cord

8:37 Barry Theal

Dark Onion that price is very small for what your actually getting!

8:37 Greg Nichols

he said its the best they can get in Italy

8:38 hybridhacker

Charles...one thing nice about the stiff cord is that it's easy to coil back up nice and neat again.

8:38 Nanolex US

I'm all over it.

8:38 Hoytman

As a newb I was contemplating the 3401. I liked it, but now I'm not so sure...I mean why fight "it" IF the RUPES is that much better. Then again the machine is new and already there are complaints about the cords. The 3401 doesn't seem to have issues other than some not liking how it feels.

8:38 Greg Nichols

I've gotten the cord to relax some

8:38 Flash Gordon

everyone quit talkingt till my questions get answered

8:38 darkonion

Flash, 15 is a 15mm orbit, 21 is a 21mm orbit. Autogeek has a video online showing the difference

8:38 CONCOURS.JOHN

105 with some playing and water can finish almost as nice as 205.

8:38 Kevin Brown

how do stop the message box from auto-scrolling?!? I can't keep up!

8:38 gofast908z

how Greg?

8:38 Greg Nichols

by pulling it over one of the handles in my garage doors

8:38 darkonion

Hoytman, forget about the Flex

8:39 I didn't like it, and I got it way less than retail.

8:39 Flash Gordon

okay, thanks onion!

8:39 Greg Nichols

kind of like pulling fishing line through a piece of rubber it takes the momory out of it

8:39 Paul Sparks

sorry but it won't stop.lol.

8:39 mikenap

The cord and trigger issues are minor, IMO. The correction speed and ease of use are the key selling points.

8:39 C. Charles Hahn

The cord isn't bad from the standpoint of it being prone to fail, just that it's a little on the stiff side. Minor gripe at worst

8:39 Kevin Brown

Ah, the cords are stiff, but it's no deal-breaker. The reverse rotation, the direct drive.... deal breaker for me.

8:40 darkonion

Barry, as a hobbyist, I couldn't justify the $300 price difference... but I will agree that it is worth every dollar!

8:40 hybridhacker

Greg...was it old age?

8:40 mikenap

Thanks for the answer of the Rupes liquids, Kevin!

8:40 Greg Nichols

chad go back to your photoshop work

8:40 Paul Sparks

Darkonion (Kevin) You have the 21 don't you ?

8:41 Hoytman

Yes, but can't you get correction with its forced rotation that can't be gotten with the action of the RUPES.

8:41 Flash Gordon

I missed the answer to the RUPES polishes

8:41 Nanolex US

Does one need to get all new pads with the Rupes all can use my old Porter???

8:41 Hoytman

I don't know that's why I'm asking. I don't have either machine.

8:41 Ron Ketcham

Kevin, I am very reluctant to bring this up, but then there is no correct time, it will eventually come into play. What with the growing industrial might of a couple of nations, one which is very good at spotting trends in all industries, and reverse engineering products, do you foresee another da coming to market that is equal or close to the Rupes?

8:41 mikenap

Rupes works fine with all my current collection of pads

8:42 boredstudent

Flash - go back to the small chat window, the history is there

8:42 Paul Sparks

IMO the longer stroke wins over the forced rotation.

8:42 darkonion

Paul, i do.

8:42 Nanolex US

Thx Mike

8:42 Flash Gordon

thanks student!

8:42 mikenap

Agree with Paul

8:42 gofast908z

The thing that bugs me about the cord it is getting caught on tires and my extension cord etc... but a small prob. Love me some RUPES!

8:42 darkonion

Hoytman, do you need to press down so hard that you'll actually get the pad to stop rotating?

8:42 mikenap

No problem!

8:43 Flash Gordon

i'm thinking i want the 21

8:43 Kevin Brown

Flash, if you have a rotary buffer and the pad is centered, there's no offset. If you removed the pad, marked the center of it with a pen, and then offset the centeering of the pad 4mm, when it spins that little dot will travel along a circular path that measures 8mm across.

8:43 C. Charles Hahn

Ron, those growing industrial nations can't match the build quality of the Italians. Wouldn't meet the bargain price point if they did.

8:43 mikenap

Flash, you really do. It's awesome.

8:43 darkonion

Flash, you definitely need one, it's amazing

8:44 gofast908z

<------- grateful the Italian RUPES is built better than some Italian cars

8:44 Flash Gordon

8:44 hybridhacker

8:44 mikenap

8:44 C. Charles Hahn

8:44 Hoytman

Thus far I've used a rotary mostly. Even when I used my Meg's unit I didn't find much need for a lot of pressure. Then again, my experience is limited.

8:45 CONCOURS.JOHN

i can attest to its abilities even with colorsand corection

8:45 gofast908z

and it doesn't come with RIDS/pigtails/trails LOL

8:45 Kevin Brown

Hoytman... I think you can get as good as or faster cutting with the 21... than the 3401. The 15? I don't think so unless you really knew how to work clean, fully prime the pad, water spritz the panel as you worked it, etc...

8:45 Nanolex US

U guys are kidding me or what, we can send a man to the moon but we can't build a better or similar to Rupes....

8:45 Hoytman

Thanks Kevin!

8:45 Ron Ketcham

Rupes, and from what I have been following in forums and such, has you to thank for making the product known to the detailing industry in the USA. They have created a "brand" awareness. However, the price point is always a concern that must be addressed in the continuing growing of a brand and it's distribution. Do you feel that Rupes will perhaps make some changes in their price points as they continue to grow in the market place?

8:46 Flash Gordon

gotcha kevin

8:46 darkonion

Honestly, if someone wants to see a side by side, 3401 vs Bigfoot 21mm, I'll do it!

8:46 Flash Gordon

i think i do anyway :/

8:46 mikenap

Do it with same pads and compounds, not like the BS DW thread

8:47 hybridhacker

LOL

8:47 gofast908z

^ hahaha

8:47 Kevin Brown

Ron, I think most companies are copying, following the others.

I wish Cyclo would build a singel-head machine. They've already got the manufacturing capability (although I don't certainly know if they build their machines!), they already use a large stroke (8mm offset=16mmø orbit).

8:47 Ron Ketcham

i realize that my question is asking a very personal response.

8:47 Nanolex US

I'm a big believer that you get what u pay for, if it's that good then it's worth the money!

8:48 darkonion

If i do a side by side, i need a few pads, and a painted cookie sheet or something

8:49 Kevin Brown

It sure was an "event" in my head when I spotted the 21 printed across that Rupes at the 2011 SEMA Show. Marco the engineer was standing there in that booth, probably cussing in his head that nobody walking by really understood the potential of his Italian machine.

8:49 Hoytman

I agree with what Kevin said about cyclo. I'm all about buying American when I can.

8:49 AndrewBigA

8:51 dschia

Hi Kevin, does the 21 fitted with 5" plate will cause any unbalance issue? Is it something you recommend doing?

8:51 mikenap

you lose a bet with that jewfro???

8:51 hybridhacker

8:51 AndrewBigA

Barry must be be Detailing now while typing!!!

8:51 AndrewBigA

i made a promise to myself

8:51 that im goign ot hold out on the fro for as long as i could

8:51 Kevin Brown

As to the price... I was instrumental in keeping it BELOW $400. It sells for a lot more in other parts of the world, rotary-action machines such as Festool and Fein sell at $400+.... the Rotex RO 150 FEQ sells at $525.00! I figured if they would keep the price in the "range" of the 3401, and the other Flex rotaries, we could "steal" away sales from those machines. I took some heat initially for wanting that price, but it has held, than goodness!

8:51 Paul Sparks

Anything new coming from Buffdaddy in the near future ?

8:51 Barry Theal

Gil I really don't detail, I pay others to do that

8:52 C. Charles Hahn

dschia -- balance is fine, I've been using a 21 with the 5" plate for a few months now

8:52 Ben@Autopia

100% right Ron. With Chemicals as well. A majority or raw materials can be sourced back to overseas

8:52 gofast908z

The RUPES 21 is worth going into debt for it.

8:52 Nanolex US

I hear ya budd...

8:52 Kevin Brown

Once a Chinese knockoff comes along for $100 less, then Rupes will have to respond, or hold fast on their philosophy of high-quality, lower production, versus cheap-cheap.

8:52 Nanolex US

We need to catch up.

8:52 mikenap

The Rupes saves so much time, it will pay for itself before you know it

8:54 Ron Ketcham

Kevin, over my years in the car care industry, I have worked with several Italian companies. They have some big "economic" issues over there, with work forces, goverment, etc. It will be interesting to see how they respond in the coming two years to the inroads they have made at this point in North America.

8:54 AndrewBigA

ya jeff & add a gopro to that as well & your set

Bored student, are you talking about an Exact-Fit plate? I cut down the Rupes 6" plate and make a plate as small as 5-1/4" with it. They are lower profile than the standard 5" plate. They is merit in the fact that a shorter plate would not magnify small movements of the machine...

8:58 Flash Gordon

you think i should?

Perfections (John) - your question about time savings was also one that I asked others about as well...but instead of comparing to 3401, I was asking about the time difference b/w 15 and 21.

essentially, if you went around the entire car with 1 machine, and then did the same using the other machine...how much time difference would there be?...half hour, 1 hour, 2 hours, etc.

it was not easy to answer, but they tried and i respect their knowledge

9:06 Ben@Autopia

MGD

9:06 hybridhacker

Kevin, we also need an air blower built into the Rupes for self cleaning pads.

9:06 Ron Ketcham

Kevin, that has "always" been something that most don't grasp. Or, go over board and are concerned way too much about some pigment transfer to the pad that doesn't wash out.

9:13 Flash Gordon

i always get to excited when i go to the chatroom and talk to much. please forgive my inmaturaty

9:13 Ben@Autopia

FYI, There is a chat history icon that you can copy/paste/save at the end if need be

9:13 Autowerx

And, with the "washer mod" that I keep hearing about... does that make the Rupes behave more like a Flex with forced rotation?

9:13 Kevin Brown

Who here has or had a 3401 and still prefers to use it over the BigFoot?

9:13 Ron Ketcham

Your are not killing the room, all need to understand that you need some time to provide knowledgable responses to the questions.

9:14 reparebrise

crickets can be heard

9:14 hybridhacker

I sold my Flex because it was worthless once the MF pads were released.

3401 was/is overrated

9:14 C. Charles Hahn

9:16 Barry Theal

9:18 hybridhacker

Kevin, can you share with other your thoughts on using the MF Finishing pads with the Rupes vs MF cutting?

9:18 CONCOURS.JOHN

Ron I ve been testing on all and find it still to be the least agressive but better machine vrs rotary.

9:18 Kevin Brown

Ron, I think that there is certainly a difference. However, if a guy feels that a particular paint is "difficult" or "hard" or "soft"... I ask they they think of it in different terms.

9:18 Flash Gordon

i like that purple color!

9:19 mikemurphy234

Well said Ron!! I think that is something that too many people overlook.

9:19 Paul Sparks

Like perfection asked , do you have many 21's in stock ?

9:19 boredstudent

none on the 21 for now

9:19 Kevin Brown

Rather than having to learn or recall how best to deal with very specific paint types, so much can be handled by:

1. Keeping the pad clean.

2. Adjusting the amount of buffing liquid being used.

9:20 boredstudent

last one sent to NY

9:20 Barry Theal

Kevin your one of the best at what you do when it comes to making the mechanics of a machine easy to understand. Do you think we as detailers look into things to much and forget to keep it simple?

9:21 hybridhacker

lol....Barry just said KISS

9:21 Nanolex US

Good point Barry. lol

9:21 Ron Ketcham

Kevin, so in your experince, there is a lack of knowledge in the industy in the understanding of the paint systems, be it an OEM, and from what production facility or the different materials used in a bodyshop and what may take place there. It appears that many consider "paint is paint" and they will attack all with the same processes.

9:21 Barry Theal

Ron, if I understand what you're asking, isn't this the reason for doing test spots? To see what process works best in each individual case? Or are you meaning something different?

9:23 Kevin Brown

"hybridhacker: Kevin, can you share with other your thoughts on using the MF Finishing pads with the Rupes vs MF cutting?"

"Ron Ketcham: Kevin, so in your experince, there is a lack of knowledge in the industy in the understanding of the paint systems, be it an OEM, and from what production facility or the different materials used in a bodyshop and what may take place there. It appears that many consider "paint is paint" and they will attack all with the same processes."

9:23 Paul Sparks

No lol

9:24 Ben@Autopia

lot of good stuff, check the chat history

9:24 Perfections

thanks kevin for your time tonight, along with others that have helped out. ill be ordering one when they come in, thanks again for all the info

9:24 Ron Ketcham

Time to allow Kevin to answer these questions, that what you came here for.

9:24 Flash Gordon

are you saying the m/f pads are a good or bad choice? speak to me like a child please

9:25 hybridhacker

MF is very good

9:25 Flash Gordon

like chocalate milk good?

9:25 mikenap

Ron, did you see my question?

9:25 hybridhacker

better!

9:26 Nanolex US

Like muscle milk!!!!

9:26 Ron Ketcham

Yes, but it is Kevin's night and he is the one to answer questions, so just allow him to do so. I am sure he is quite capable of doing so.

9:26 Flash Gordon

nuff said. i'm placing my order for a 21 w/m/f pads!!!

9:26 Barry Theal

There better then an Amish girl on rumspringer!

9:26 Kevin Brown

I think that yes, there is a lack of understanding, but that does not mean that you can't "get there from here" without that knowledge. the information you need often requires being able to work on those paint-types. For some guys, they'll rarely work on a repaint, let alone various ones. So, if in the polishing process they only make small adjustments, or one adjustment at a time (JUST the amount of liquid, or JUST the pad, or JUST the speed, etc.), they've got a much better chance of "getting there", even though they had never worked on the paint-type beofre.

9:26 Me

What accounts for more of the correction . Pad / Machine / Liquid??

9:27 CONCOURS.JOHN

Well said Kevin. My belief nothing will replace a test section.

9:27 Flash Gordon

speaking of amish. what is up with that amish mafia show? those guys would get their asses handed to them where i come from

9:28 Ron Ketcham

As I understand your response, you are saying that there is no one "easy-one fits all" answer, that the detailer must do his due dilegence to make things work?

9:28 Kevin Brown

As to microfiber: they work spectacularly with the large stroke machines, however... a foam pad can actually finish some jobs quicker because of the way each type of pad deals with .... paint residue!

9:28 Nanolex US

I'll say Machine.

9:28 hybridhacker

I took it as we need to know how to adjust our technique to make it work.

9:28 Paul Sparks

Test spot-very important IMO

9:28 Flash Gordon

thx kb!

9:29 Me

how many people are finishing with a Rupes?

9:29 Ron Ketcham

Kevin, may I "hi-jack" for a moment, your night regarding the asked question?

9:29 hybridhacker

I do I do!

9:29 mikenap

I've used it for finishing with good results

9:29 Kevin Brown

Yes, Ron, but if a paint is "soft", the polishing guy is usually saying that the paint cuts rapidly. However, they tend to mention that it is so soft that is "hazes", or that the pad or liquid is causing "haze".

9:30 Sure!

9:30 Ron Ketcham

Not quite at that, but a "tip" as far as diagnois of a vehicle's finish.

9:30 Kevin Brown

Sure.

9:31 Me

test spot for correction as well as for finishing too -

9:31 Paul Sparks

agreed

9:31 mikenap

^always!

9:31 Flash Gordon

$5 shipping is AWESOME!!!

9:31 Me

not too many people talk about how important that is

9:32 Flash and his ADD

9:32 Flash Gordon

now if my cc will only go through....

9:32 Ron Ketcham

OK, simple, open the drivers side door and look for the build date, then inspect for "refinish", which there are many clues. All provide "information" as to what one may be dealing with. Age of the paint, refinish, etc. In simple terms, take a little time to save time and be aware of what they may be working with.

9:32 Greg Nichols

Kevin.....how mich longer till you have a training center.......

9:32 Barry Theal

Who let flash back by the way?

9:32 mikemurphy234

Great suggestion Greg.

9:33 C. Charles Hahn

As far as I'm concerned a "test spot" means taking the finish all the way from hammered to LSP ready

9:33 Me

lol - you did. Back when you had mod access

9:33 Hoytman

I agree with Charlie!

9:33 Kevin Brown

IF your common pad+polish+machine+procedure constantly turns out a fantastic result, but then a "soft" paint will NOT finish out without hazing or scouring, there's a very high likelihood that the residue (the paint that has been scrubbed from the surface) has buried and stuck your abrasive particles to the pad. The particles can no longer roll about, they can't adjust position, they can't cut to the same degree...

9:33 Me

and probably why you aren't a mod ant longer

9:33 any

9:33 mikemurphy234

LOL David. And it starts....

9:34 Hoytman

Kevin, Are you then saying that we need to change the pads or wash them rather than simply clean them on the fly?

9:34 Barry Theal

lol

9:35 Kevin Brown

This is the main issue most guy s are having. This dynamic gets much WORSE with microfiber because the strings bind together and trap residue and clumped particles. At this point the microfiber is not so "micro" anymore... and scouring ensues.

9:35 hybridhacker

Lets here some info on the future of BuffDaddy!

9:35 Me

Kevin - any chance of you coming out with you own machine???

9:35 Ron Ketcham

Kevin, EXACTLY!

9:35 Paul Sparks

As Greg and a few others have touched on, are there any plans for another NXTi or similar class type deal ?

9:36 hybridhacker

DF....it will be called....wait for it....The BUFFDADDY!

9:36 Nanolex US

lol

9:36 moderator2

hey everyone

9:36 mikenap

East coast NXTi............please!

9:36 Barry Theal

Hey Moderator

9:36 Kevin Brown

With foam though, the pad is still going to load with residue and debris, but eventually (particularly with large stroke random orbitals), the lateral motion and varying speeds and pad rotation is going to cause said residue to "fall off" the foam, and allow it to be re-crushed, re-dispersed, etc.

9:36 Me

oh boy...

9:37 Paul Sparks

Better late then never

9:37 C. Charles Hahn

Yes please, Mike

9:37 mikenap

9:37 hybridhacker

KB...with your above comment, would you say the 21 will tend to finish better because of this?

9:37 Me

We'll do it at Detail-Polooza 2013

9:37 Flash Gordon

guess who is the proud owner of a RUPES

9:37 gofast908z

I want the KBM (Kevin Brown Machine)

9:38 Barry Theal

NOt Fermani!!!

9:38 CONCOURS.JOHN

Pads and paint vary sometimes working the polish to its limits with water work. Some times keeping the pad superclean work. Change up of pads before the polish is "done" can help (with a primed pad" I dont take credit but give it to Kevin's writings but it has changed how I do things and does work.

9:38 mikenap

Nearly everyone here?

9:38 hybridhacker

Congrats Flash!

9:38 Paul Sparks

Congrats Flash !

9:38 Kevin Brown

Machine, some day, YES. Name, Buff Daddy, NO because Dodo uses it as a slang term for the DAS Pro-6.

9:38 NXT... YES!

9:38 Ron Ketcham

Kevin, and as I understand this sort of thing with a foam pad, the particles will "dry" and be easily removed with a stiff detail brush and some compressed air applied to the pad on the unit?

9:38 C. Charles Hahn

Detail-Polooza 2013, is that what you're calling the event next month DF?

9:38 gofast908z

alternative bodies could be cool *looks around*

9:38 mikenap

Great, ANOTHER Mike is here...

9:39 Flash Gordon

9:39 Flash Gordon

SWEET!!!

9:39 mikemurphy234

Speaking of that Charlie. I can't make it that weekend...I'll be in Chicago.

9:40 Greg Nichols

If one thing about the rupes machine cuould be changed.....what would that be?

9:40 Kevin Brown

We're also wanting to do a live sand/polish session and have it run non-stop, until the car is DONE. We think that there is soo much to learn by watching, by taking questions and responding not only in word, but in action. We would like to attempt accomplishing this "street-style", not hi-end production

9:40 C. Charles Hahn

Ah, that's too bad Mike

9:40 hybridhacker

MAcco job!

9:40 Me

no way

9:40 Nanolex US

9:40 Kevin Brown

CRAZY FLASH! Thanks, got me sale..!!!!!

9:41 hybridhacker

Add me to the list when that happens KB

9:41 mikemurphy234

Yeah I was looking forward to it

9:41 hybridhacker

Andrew has a car we could use for sanding! LOL

9:41 Mush-Mouth

I wish all the KB wanna bees would admit that they are sucking onto something that ain't theirs

9:41 Ron Ketcham

Kevin, when you use the "micro" sand paper disc, on the Rupes unit, do you lubricate the sanding disc with water only or do you add a bit of soap to add lubricity?

9:42 hybridhacker

^^^yeah taht!

9:42 Paul Sparks

When might this take place Kevin ?

9:42 Greg Nichols

would adding more stroke make finishing harder so the 21mm is the sweet spot?

9:42 C. Charles Hahn

Hey Tom

9:42 Tom Weed

Hi all

9:42 Paul Sparks

He's back !

9:43 hybridhacker

lol

9:43 Me

Todd who?

9:43 hybridhacker

I didn't say it!

9:43 Kevin Brown

Right Ron, on the pad cleaning, assuming there's not an abundance of liquid that has entered the foam. I still use a nylon brush to scrub away debris along the edge of the pad (it's where all the crunchy stuff accumulates because the pad acts as a squeegee of sorts along its edge, gathering up remnants that have come to rest on the polishing surface). I prefer compressed air, and a microfiber towel for general on-the-fly cleaning.

9:43 mikenap

Hybrid Todd

I think Todd 002 wants to be Todd 001

9:44 gofast908z

Why don't we keep it on subject? No need to fill the room with Drama when Kevin is taking HIS TIME to help everyone here.

9:44 Kevin Brown

Ron I don't add soap when I machine sand because I get sooo many bubbles (hard to see through), but I do use a trigger bottle of water to frequently rinse the disc clean.

9:44 Mush-Mouth

or is it vise vers

9:45 Paul Sparks

Any plans on these classes you can share at this time Kevin ?

9:45 Greg Nichols

did you see the two questions I posted above KB

9:45 C. Charles Hahn

Mush, this really isn't the time or place for that

9:45 AndrewBigA

kevin how are you doing man?

9:45 Me

Agreed - keep the crap out of here

9:45 Nanolex US

Agreed..

9:45 fabz

kevin are you saying you damp sand with the rupes?

9:45 Mush-Mouth

truth must be hurting people's feelings

9:46 Flash Gordon

yes

9:46 mikenap

No, trolling just gets old

9:46 gofast908z

^bingo

9:46 Me

Lets not feed him

9:46 Kevin Brown

So, a SUPER machinelloking for the questions greg...

9:46 Ron Ketcham

Kevin, the reason I mentioned the addition of a very small amount of a soap to the water, is that working with Merka and 3M, doing so releases the removed particles from the paper, reducing deep marring and extends the life of the sanding material. Doesn't take much, just a small "touch" of soap to the water used.

9:46 Kevin Brown

Yes.

9:47 gofast908z

Looks like Andrew is having connections issues...poor guy.

9:47 Flash Gordon

kb you stole my color

9:47 Autowerx

Ron, would ONR work? In a very low dilution.

9:47 AndrewBigA

im trying to make the chat larger

9:47 Hoytman

How much is a "small amount", or "touch".

9:47 Kevin Brown

Okay, got them.. stroke and changes...

9:47 CONCOURS.JOHN

its happening here too. go fast

9:47 Flash Gordon

nickel size

9:48 fabz

i mean the 21 for damp sanding - removal of severe scratcjes... 1500, 2000, 3000?

9:48 C. Charles Hahn

That's what I use Meguiar's #00 soap for Ron... super thin and doesn't "suds up" like most soaps

9:48 Ron Ketcham

hoyt, that would depend on the concentration of the soap you use. Basic is a drop or two into a quart of water.

9:48 gofast908z

ONR is going to give a slight film to cut through when sanding

9:48 AndrewBigA

how do i make the chat bigger?

9:48 gofast908z

this was a topic at NXT

9:48 AndrewBigA

popout then back in?

9:48 ehh

9:49 Hoytman

Thanks, Ron. That description is understood.

9:49 Tom Weed

Andrew, mines not working either

9:49 Me

POPOUT

9:49 gofast908z

DI water is the choice if i recall corrctly

9:49 Autowerx

got it. thanks!

9:49 Kevin Brown

No, I don't recommend that large a stroke be used for sanding, unless you have a REAL steady hand, and are able to laser-adjust to fine nuances of the panel. You've got a huge potential for edge-digging of the disc.

9:49 gofast908z

For the same reason, Megs Final Inspection has replaced ONR as my clay lube of choice as well.

9:49 Me

Really? I actually prefer ONR

9:50 Ron Ketcham

Gofast, DI water is not necessary for the sanding process, unless one is totally anal about such things.

9:50 Me

cleaner

9:50 michakaveli

greetings folks

9:50 Me

hey

9:50 fabz

can I find any videos of damp sanding with that electric palm machine on your website?

9:50 mikenap

Found it, Chris?

9:50 reparebrise

Ron, for paint prep using waterborne paints DI water is a must, just for your future info.

9:51 michakaveli

no doubt!

9:51 Flash Gordon

hello

9:51 Ron Ketcham

From my experience, if the soap does not contain any butyl component and is coconut oil based, it is all you need for such.

9:51 For Paint Prep, Yvan, yes, that is very important, but we are discussing "sanding before buffing".

9:52 Ben@Autopia

hey guys, its been fun, but have to go..have a good night

9:52 Autowerx

night

9:52 mikenap

9:52 Paul Sparks

Later Ben. Thanks for hosting this.

9:52 Ron Ketcham

See you, the corner 7/11 is waiting for it's number one night guy to show up to work, Ben.

9:53 Me

3M has started using the term DAMP SANDING again: http://multimedia.3m.c...SSS--

9:53 reparebrise

since we do both in our shops, the only water that is not DI is what we drink

9:53 Me

night Ben

9:53 hybridhacker

KB, have you sold many of those Festool scrapers? It worked great on some sags/runs the other day.

9:53 Ron Ketcham

For wet/damp sanding, there is nothing wrong with Dawn, except it does have some other additives that are not required.

9:53 Kevin Brown

I don't think that 10.5mm offset is the "sweet spot" for anything necessarily, but I think that there's limit as to what is reasonable to use on a "project". If we only worked on motorcycles, such a large offset wouldn't be efficient for use because at the outer limits of the pad, you're not getting polishing 100% of the time. The larger the stroke, the less the outer "ring" will be polished (unless you had SO much stroke that the offset was larger than the pad, then ONLY the outer ring would be getting polished).

9:54 AndrewBigA

nice. now the chat is larger so i can read.

9:54 i like saying wetsanding. dampsanding sounds stupid

9:54 michakaveli

"popout" works nicely

9:54 Me

that's a revalation

9:54 mikenap

dampsanding

9:54 hybridhacker

How about moist sanding?

9:54 AndrewBigA

the popout wasnt working before for me

9:55 Me

user error

9:55 mikenap

^lol

9:55 Ron Ketcham

Kevin, for the "gear heads", what they may relate to is the term "torque".

9:55 Kevin Brown

In theory, couldn't we design a pad and machine that offered ZERO offset all the way to whatever we'd want, not any larger offset than the pad of course, otherwise the entire pad would orbit in a hulahoop circle.

9:55 gofast908z

Ron, I prefer the DI as it leaves no variables

9:55 reparebrise

can someone volunteer to send me the complete chat by e-mail, I have to get ot bed I have a flight in a few hours

9:55 gofast908z

As cheap as it can be sourced, why not?

9:56 CONCOURS.JOHN

Kevin curios on the CEROS what pad options are availible. Your thought on performance of the sizes?

9:56 Me

I will be posting the transcript on my thread here

9:56 Ron Ketcham

9:56 Bill Holbrook

Kevin i dont know if you got my email just wanted to say thanks for the advice with 75 rupes.

9:56 reparebrise

how can we access it later

9:56 gofast908z

9:58 Flash Gordon

its just now getting intresting. i'm hangin all nite long!!!

9:58 AndrewBigA

9:59 Paul Sparks

Like a adjustable cam for making the throw

9:59 CONCOURS.JOHN

Rupes biggest mistake is not to pay Kevin for future R&D

9:59 Kevin Brown

Imagine a ball of foam. first, cut a flat face onto the foam. Next, cut a portion of the foam away (like when you slice a section of an apple with a knife). If you had the "right" foam... you could use the flat face to get maximum throw, and then as you tilted the machine... you'd be shortening up the lateral throw of the machine.

10:00 mikenap

I like Paul's idea

10:00 Flash Gordon

that is unless you've already shipped it out ...

10:00 Greg Nichols

Rupes mistake is that they don't fly KB over to discuss things

10:00 Kevin Brown

Yeah, Paul... kinda like the "Variable Valve Timing" technology many are using in engines now, a cam phaser

10:01 AndrewBigA

whats up greg nichols!

10:01 Ron Ketcham

From my work with the Italians, not going to happen. All people from the USA are still savages and need the Italians to bring culture and expertise to the savages.

10:03 Hoytman

I had to re-boot for some reason.

10:03 C. Charles Hahn

If only the Dynabrade wasn't so bulky and lacking balance

10:03 Me

what's the throw of the DB

10:04 C. Charles Hahn

3/4"

10:04 Ron Ketcham

What do you all think of the new Mequiars' drill attachment to change a drill to a DA?

10:04 mikenap

18 or 19, isn't it?

10:04 Hoytman

Ron, I was just asking a question about using Dawn, and not infering Dawn is what I use. I've never done much sanding.

10:04 Flash Gordon

i've never used the dyna, but from the looks of it I don't like it

10:04 Kevin Brown

Yes, John, you'd have to make that adjustment, otherwise the pad would force drive into the paint. But a very pliable foam would slow rotation as it compressed, but still, you could feasibly polish with a sphere-shaped pad (like a powerball), but you'd need to pull back to avoid excessive digging.

10:04 michakaveli

try it Flash.... it's not bad actually

10:05 CONCOURS.JOHN

So we are talking position. while many disregard the 7424xp it can be very effective on small areas and give good rotation if pressure is applied in the correct angle Kevin?.

10:05 Kevin Brown

Ron, no comment.

10:05 mikenap

^agree

10:05 Ron Ketcham

It's not a game changer, Hoytman, it has it uses, I have used it in a pinch.

10:05 mikenap

I loved the DB until the Rupes came out

10:05 Me

great for body shops who want to convert their rotarys to DA

10:05 Hoytman

Considering the price of batteries and the cost of the drill attachment...I'll be saving my money.

10:05 reparebrise

forget teh dynabrade, and go to Buffdaddy.com and order a Rupes

10:05 mikemurphy234

Kevin, I've said it before and I'll keep saying it, Thanks for all that you have done and continue to do for all of us interested in paint correction. You've been so instrumental in getting many of us to a whole new level with your articles and teachings. To anyone who is interested in taking any class that Kevin is involved in, my suggestion is to get to it no matter where it is located!!!! Good luck to you KB and I'll call ya tomorrow.

10:06 Flash Gordon

i just went there!

10:06 C. Charles Hahn

Agreed Mike... the Dynabrade was pretty good, but lots of vibration in comparison with the Rupes

10:06 Me

unless yor are in Canada

10:06 AndrewBigA

i cant stand the soft start on my new dewalt

10:06pmis there a way to remove it?

10:06pmi want to remove it.

10:06 Hoytman

I guess I'll have to come out and say it. I was hoping for a soap recommendation when sanding.

10:06 reparebrise

of course if you are in Canada then give me a call, thanks «««f

10:07 Kevin Brown

Yes, no need to get rid of the typical random orbital... it can do so much that a large stroke can't. There are always going to be situations where only a rotary will work, or only a random orbital will work.

10:07 Flash Gordon

kb what happens if this machine takes a dump, can you fix it?

10:07 AndrewBigA

hoytman u want a soap for wetsanding?

10:07 mikenap

True Charlie. I haven't used it since getting my Rupes, but you can ask Michakaveli how much I loved it before that.

10:07 Me

Yes, to echo Mike's statement...Thanks for all you do both on Autopia and elsewhere. It's been a pleasure to have you here and I feel it's been a success! We'll have to do this again soon!!!

10:07 Kevin Brown

THANK YOU MIKE...! You inspire me to become better!!!

10:07 michakaveli

^ Mike loved it (sarcasm)

10:07 Ron Ketcham

Hoytman, you can buy a 3/8th drill with variable speed control that is 110v. Not necessay to use only a battery drill. They show that because the "common man" owns one these days and is still fascinated by not having to use a cord.

10:07 AndrewBigA

kevin can i remove the soft start on my dewalt or no"?

Or ones can challenge themselves to do it efficiently with a DA

10:08 AndrewBigA

are you allowed to discuss rotarys lol?

10:08 Kevin Brown

I can fix it, but they're supposed to have a warranty center in place already (still waiting, though)

10:08 AndrewBigA

its not broken

10:08pmi want the soft start feature removed

10:08 mikenap

No sarcasm, I did like the DB attachement

10:08 AndrewBigA

like how the old dewalt trigger used to work

10:09 Flash Gordon

i would rather you fix it then some yahoo i don't know

10:09 AndrewBigA

no soft start

10:09 Me

shut up A and get a Rupes

10:09 AndrewBigA

i will get a rupes

10:09 Kevin Brown

Yeah, shoulda got the DWP849, not the DWP849X! I wonder if you can just buy the electronic control module and switch it out?!

10:09 Hoytman

BigA...was refering to what soap they use in the water when dampsanding, but the question got lost in the shuffle.

10:09 Ron Ketcham

Andrew, so go to a pawn shop and buy an older one, put some new brushes in it.

10:09 AndrewBigA

i have the dwp849

10:09pmi have both

10:09 Greg Gellas

The only weird thing about the rupes is the start, It will ramp up to a higher speed and then slow back down.

10:09 Flash Gordon

hmmmm

10:10 reparebrise

or wait a little while and get teh new Rupes, Roflo

10:10 LilJayV10

I've noticed that too Greg, i figured it was to over come the friction of the pad on the paint to get started

10:10 Hoytman

I think Charlie answered my question earlier and I missed it.

10:10 Kevin Brown

the literature lists that the DWP849X has soft start, but says nothing about the DWP849 having or NOT having soft start.

10:10 AndrewBigA

hoytman for soap i can give you my secret traditional soap

10:11 Flash Gordon

just don't use goop

10:11 Greg Gellas

LilJay I can see that, but it also makes the machine spin during startup and not allow the pad to spin if that makes sense

my birthday

10:13 Ron Ketcham

From my chats with a Makita rep, years ago, the reason for the "soft" start is that reduces product "sling" for most users. Allows time to get the pad to the surface with out throwing product all around.

10:13 AndrewBigA

old news like the rotary is haha?

10:13 Flash Gordon

i'm going to the ozarks and am stoked

10:13 Kevin Brown

The LHR75 is likely the most impressive macine out right now... it is WICKED

10:21 Kevin Brown

It's lower profile, too, which makes it easier to maneuver, and any imbalance is not magnified via leveraging to the same degree. Leveraging meaning because it is taller, a small motion on one side (like if you hand was on top of the machine head and you tilted it a couple degrees) would magnify on the other side.

10:21 Greg Gellas

Sure not this one though..Full clear bra install

"Asphalt Rocket: Kevin what about the dynabrade small air polishers compared to the LHR75

Dynabrade makes some great tools, and they have one that is nearly identical. Price is higher, but id you've got a good "connection", you'd have a very similar machine. Nothing but good to say about Dynabrade.

aw david that is precious

10:31pmYes, 101 is in da house! But, have you tried M100?

10:32 michakaveli

One-Hunnit??

10:32 boredstudent

Kevin - What's special about M100?

10:32 Scottwax

no whats the difference?

10:32pmneed something to cut faster than 105

10:32 Kevin Brown

It's really inexpensive and very user-friendly.

10:32 LilJayV10

when we talked you mentioned that you don't look at foam pads being "cutting pads" "polishing pads" etc, we talked about drilling holes in the pad to change what it does. Here's my question, how do you cut with a "finishing pad" and finish with a "cutting pad" You said one job you did all you had was a black/gray pad and used 105

10:32 C. Charles Hahn

Wait, what? "Compound MF" as in another new pad?

10:32 Kevin Brown

It cuts faster than M105.

10:33 LilJayV10

100 puts 105 to shame, lol

10:33 Scottwax

10:34 LilJayV10

10:34 NotQuiteAPro

good evening everybody

10:34 Scottwax

Worked the google, says 100 is for rotary, works okay with DA too?

10:34 mikenap

100 is way underpriced for its performance

10:34 Paul Sparks

M101 has killer cut but M100 is a lot cheaper if yuo don't need the cut IMO\

10:34 LilJayV10

works great with DA scott

10:35 Flash Gordon

don't be saying that or there will be a price increase

10:35 NotQuiteAPro

You think 100 is overprice? I think 101 is overpriced

10:35 LilJayV10

Rupes+MF pad+M100= defect killer

10:35 Paul Sparks

I use m100 with both

10:35 Scottwax

On not jet black BMW paint, 105 is coming up short, shouldn't have to do multiple passes with a wool pad.

10:35 mikenap

^this

10:35 Kevin Brown

"LilJayV10: when we talked you mentioned that you don't look at foam pads being "cutting pads" "polishing pads" etc, we talked about drilling holes in the pad to change what it does. Here's my question, how do you cut with a "finishing pad" and finish with a "cutting pad" You said one job you did all you had was a black/gray pad and used 105"

Right. We are SPOILED with the compounds we have today, most of the good ones are using very fine abrasive, not clumped (aka n0n-diminshing). IF you can use a pad THAT can easily contour to the surface being polished AND the pad can consistently keep the paint surface clean or "gum-free"... then THAT pad can be used with great success as either a cutting pad or a finishing pad.

10:35 Scottwax

Do 100 or 101 occasionally leave pigtails like 105 can?

10:36 Kevin Brown

Scott, are you misting a bit of water between applications? that could ramp up your cut speed by as much as... 50%.

10:36 Flash Gordon

no doubt ^

10:37 Scottwax

I've tried, doesn't seem to do much

10:37 Kevin Brown

It's not about diluting the compound or rinsing away its lubricating properties...

10:37 Scottwax

And if 100 or 101 cut faster...

10:37 steeda

"Paul Sparks: M101 has killer cut but M100 is a lot cheaper if yuo don't need the cut IMO\" How do you feel the M100 cuts compared to M105?

10:37 Kevin Brown

What speed?

10:37 Flash Gordon

keep trying

10:37 mikenap

I think those pigtails are more from clumped up cut off paint than from the compound itself.

10:37 Scottwax

I know, just enough to get it working again.

10:37 Kevin Brown

What pad, twisted, non-twisted strings?

10:37 Scottwax

have it on 6 with the DA, white foamed wool.

10:38 Kevin Brown

101 is the king kong

10:38 Scottwax

5" MF cutting discs don't do squat

10:38 Kevin Brown

OH! wool on the DA?

10:38 LilJayV10

cuts more than 100?

10:38 Scottwax

At least not fast, that's for sure, wool speeds it up

10:38 Flash Gordon

i thought it was pimp juice?

10:38 NotQuiteAPro

Do those Carpro or foamed wool pads work well on a DA?

10:38 Scottwax

Paint is hard enough 105 + wool looks pretty close to LSP ready

10:38 Kevin Brown

Uh, I think we can improve that.

10:39pmWhich backing plate?

10:39 Flash Gordon

what about those denim pads?

10:39 Paul Sparks

IMO m100 cuts and finishes a little better then m105 and has a longer working time.

10:39 CONCOURS.JOHN

I've been playing with 105 for a while it can finish nice (not super perfect) but this is coming from someone who had to near finish with PPG DRX25.

10:39 Kevin Brown

You were the first guy to put up a "KBM" video if I am not mistaken...

10:39 Scottwax

I think its one of Optimum's but I know its rebranded

10:39 steeda

10:39 Scottwax

Yeah, been working paint that way a long time

10:40 Kevin Brown

ROB!

10:40 WCD

Hey neighbor!

10:40 Scottwax

but I've been running into freakishly hard paint on some BMWs.

10:40 Kevin Brown

I think we can fix a lot of the issues by switching you over to an Exact Fit plate.

10:40pmAnd residue is KILLING the cut.

10:40 Flash Gordon

you would have to read 1000 threads to cover the info kev has covered tonite. chatrooms rule!!!

10:41 Paul Sparks

Hey Rob

10:41 Kevin Brown

I'm sending you a plate.

10:41 LilJayV10

KB can you expound on the residue killing the cut?

10:41 Scottwax

I have a backing plate that is just a touch smaller than the 5" mf pads

10:41pmbut not one quite as large as the wool pad

10:41 NotQuiteAPro

the M67?

10:41 Kevin Brown

You do? Most factory-sized plates are 4-7/8" and the mf's are 5.5"... did oyu cut one down?

10:42 Scottwax

I could always go rotary but that generally means 3 steps

10:42pmdon't know, the 5" pads overlap it by about 1/8th of an inch.

10:42pmThought the pads were 5"?

10:42pmActually picked them up at walmart

10:42 steeda

the megs mf pads are 5"

10:43 Kevin Brown

5-1/2"

10:43pmUnless they were prototype with neoprene vs foam

10:43 Scottwax

might be, could be old stock

10:43pmIf 101 has more cut, definitely want to try that out

10:44 Greg Nichols

101 is nice but short working time

10:44 Paul Sparks

Pimp Juice

10:44 Scottwax

105 has a short working time too...

10:44 Flash Gordon

time 4 a klondike bar!!!! brb!!!!!

10:44 Scottwax

sometimes add a little OHP to give me longer work time

10:45 C. Charles Hahn

100's working time is longer than 101/105

10:45 CONCOURS.JOHN

I can agree with Kevin, while a compound can in crease cut it can also load the pad much quicker. the expended product can abrade and mess the finish very quickly making the compound seem too harsh. At the same time a huge amont of material is being removed and subsequent steps to refine are removing more material,

10:45 Paul Sparks

Some guys are mixing M101 and D300 for a longer working time

10:45 NotQuiteAPro

I was going to order some M101 but was thinking I like HD Cut better? How is the cut compared between the two? Is M101 the new king of cut?

10:45pm^^^ yes I have read that on AGO

10:45 Scottwax

I spin the pad over a nylon bristle brush after every section

10:46 mikenap

HD Cut has less cut than 105 but longer work time

10:46 Scottwax

HD cut works okay, sometimes its hard to wipe off, but the new version isn't as tempermental

10:46 Paul Sparks

Agreed

10:46 mikenap

I don't know anything that cuts more than 101 currently

10:46pmNew version of cut is way better than the first batch

10:47 Bill Holbrook

I use to do that need to use air much better

10:47 hybridhacker

rocks in a bottle

10:47 Scottwax

So 101 > 100 > 105?

10:47 mikenap

yes

10:47 LilJayV10

something strange i noticed last night, i put some M100 in one of those small clear bottles, it just slides off the sides to the bottom compared to D300, M105 and 205 clings to the sides

10:47 Kevin Brown

LilJayV10: KB can you expound on the residue killing the cut? The residue encompasses the tiny abrasive particles, locks them onto the pad, and therefore they are minimally touching the paint, or not at all. The paint residue doesn't allow fibers such as microfiber to stay independent of each other, so they scour as well because they are larger in diameter, misshapen, etc. This is why a simple spritz of water helps so much; it creates drag when the pad rolls across it, which pulls the residue and abrasive back out of the pad.

10:47 NotQuiteAPro

Wow, ok I need to track down a sample of M101 then, that sound really agressive.

10:47 Flash Gordon

lol to rocks n bottle!!! that was my answer but my klondike bar is melting!

10:48 mikenap

NQAP, aren't you in Statesville?

10:48 CONCOURS.JOHN

DRX55 Mikenap it can level full orange peel without sanding removes 600 grit sand marks.

10:48 mikenap

Ok. I'm in Concord. I can get you a sample

10:48 Kevin Brown

Scott, you should switch to a microfiber towel instead of the brush. It will REMOVE a lot more of the residue and fluff the fibers WAY better than a brush.

10:49 mikenap

Not familiar with it John. How makes it?

10:49 NotQuiteAPro

Mike, send me a 10:49 Greg Gellas

I dont find a DA spins with a MF. Is that your case also Kevin?

10:49pmDa Doesn't spin

10:49 mikenap

I will

10:50 Scottwax

I use a wet MF it is seems like the pad is really loading up.

10:50 mikenap

in a few minutes

10:50 Hoytman

KB...Did I misunderstand you earlier stating that you use a brush too?

10:50 Scottwax

then the brush again

10:50 Kevin Brown

No, what do you mean, are you saying that when you use a microfiber on a typical random orbital that the backing plate rotation is slowed or stalled?

10:50 Flash Gordon

i i've found heavy pressure is NOT always the answer

10:51 Scottwax

When I use a DA, I use enough pressure to bog the machine, then let up just enough to get it sped back up again.

10:51 CONCOURS.JOHN

PPG Makes DRX 55 no longer availible. I only have access to a few gallons. Definition of rocks in a bottle.

10:51 Kevin Brown

Only if the edge of the pad is loaded with crunchy stuff that won't come off with air of a microfiber towel. But I do this with the machine off... I don't risk shredding the pad.

10:51 Greg Gellas

Yes when I use a towel to try to Clean it simply stalls out on me. I have been using a hard edge to clean and fluff the pad. At the shop I use the leading edge of my plastic sink.

10:51 Hoytman

Got it. Thanks!

10:51 NotQuiteAPro

I use a MF to clean pads, when I do it the spindle doesn't rotate just vibrates, I hold my arm with it bent 90 degrees at the elbow and hold the towel gripped in my fingers and run the DA down the towel on top of my arm in a wiping motion using my arm to hold the towel in place. Then I hit it with the brush to fluff.

10:52 Flash Gordon

remember when everyone was busting spindles?

10:52 NotQuiteAPro

Works great, IME

10:52 Hoytman

KB...My question was in regards to cleaning foam. Does it work for mf as well?

10:52 Scottwax

Never broke a spindle and at times I put a ton of pressure on DA's.

10:52 Greg Nichols

I think it past my bed time.....

10:52 hybridhacker

old man

10:53 Greg Nichols

still dealing with sinus infection and better hit the hay

10:53 Hoytman

10:53 Kevin Brown

Oh... no I try not to TOUCH the pad or disc with a hard edge only because I don't want to risk transferring material ONTO the pad or disc.

I try not to buff over TAPE for that EXACT reason. I see a lot of guys do this, and they wonder why their finishing is inconsistent, even on the same panel.

TAPE RESIDUE gets into the pad.

10:53 Greg Gellas

Later Greg

10:53 mikenap

Probably get to sleep in, chance of rain Saturday so my regular Thursday morning wash customer (last weekly one I have) won't get his vehicles washed.

10:54 Flash Gordon

me neither, but I think we both have enough common sense not to put are full body weight unto the machine. I'm afraid some did not

10:54 kakeuter

Good point about not running the machine over the tape line

10:55 Greg Gellas

Really, So even using a new paint scraper could transfer metal to the MF pad?

10:55 mikenap

when the hell did Kody get here?

10:55 kakeuter

ninja

10:55 Flash Gordon

who uses tape?

10:55 mikenap

obviously!

10:55 Kevin Brown

Air is best for removing hard debris and fluffing of the pad.

Microfiber is best for removing MOISTURE from the pad, and 2nd best for fluffing of the pad.

A brush is the LEAST effective.

10:55 mikenap

and I must be retarded....so hybridhacker has been Chad this whole time????

10:56 Scottwax

Brush usually fluffs it right up

10:56 hybridhacker

lmao

10:56 mikenap

Chad just stole Kody's top ninja award

10:57 Kevin Brown

Definitely, most of these buffing liquids are using hard particles such as aluminum oxide... rest assured, they'll cut into paint, plastic, glass, chrome... whatever!

10:57 mikenap

Lol@Chris

10:57 hybridhacker

I usually hit with brush and air, or just air

10:57 Greg Gellas

My fingernails have been the best tool to fluff a MF pad.

10:57 Kevin Brown

Thanks, Nichols, chat with you soon

10:57 michakaveli

i've been known to use my fingernails as well, looks like a fresh manicure after a polishing session

10:58 Kevin Brown

Yup air is best.

10:58 kakeuter

i'll try using the MF towel more

10:58 LilJayV10

I clean the MF pad with brush and compressed air. would it be beneficial to incorporate an MF towel as well?

10:58 C. Charles Hahn

I use the tornador blow gun to fluff my MF pads... works really well

10:59 michakaveli

compressed air... MF pads... whatever you want for polish/compound - FTW

11:36 C. Charles Hahn

the trigger is only so-so.

11:36 Kevin Brown

Yes, it'a a variable trigger but it has soft start so it can be a bit funky, I suspect.

Hey KB....what causes the sanding discs to "suction" to the paint from time to time? Too much water?

11:39 Flash Gordon

i had a guy here pm me to death one time wanting me to clean his 15 yr old tail pipes for FREE!

11:39 Hoytman

Well, I'm looking to buy a rotary in the future (to replace my cheapo unit) and wanted a varible speed trigger like on the Flex. Wasn't sure if Makita, DeWalt, or other manufacturers offered it or not. ...Cornholio...LOL.

11:39 Scottwax

Get a dewalt, last you 50 years

11:39 Kevin Brown

Residue + water = way too much abrasive surface area in contact with the paint, so it stalls rotation.

11:39pmvery little to zero void area between the disc and paint, lots of drag.

Wow, shame I had to leave so early. There was 35 in at the time. Went on another hour it looks like.

Thanks again Kevin for stopping by and passing on some of your detailing wisdom!

Last nights chat was great. Kudos to Kevin for the giving of his time and the sharing of his expertise. Thanks to all the members that stopped by and contributed to the evening. This chatroom is a weekly event and it would be great to see a lot of the members from last night stop by more often and join in. We are always looking for suggestions on how to improve these sessions and who you would like to see invited in the future.

Hi Paul,

Thanks for the invite a few weeks ago. I actually stumbled onto the chat the other evening, but I did enjoy it.

Wanted to thank Mr. Brown for sharing his time with us.

It was my first time participating in a chat, so it took a little getting used to at first. Lots of comments popping in at one time, and that made it tough for all of us, imo, to try and keep up. I've shared some suggestions with Paul, and I'm sure that with additional suggestions from others along with a little trial and error these chats could really take off. I agree with Paul that the chats have great potential to be a great learning tool for all of us.

I'd also like to thank the moderators and the forum owner for allowing this sort of thing to take place.

One thing I think is really neat, and something I wasn't expecting, was logging in on the forum this evening and being able to read the chat "chatter". That's really nice for the folks that weren't able to participate.

I don't know to many of you folks over here, but I do recognize some of the names and I feel last nights' chat had some great talent participating for me to learn from. I like to clown around some just like most of you, but I also like to give my full attention to the guest speakers. I really liked how Ron (don't recall the last name) was asking some good questions and trying to keep things in-line a bit. The fast posting makes it a bit tough to focus.

I'd also like to take this time to thank Paul, Garry Dean, and Charlie Hahn, all who've been super nice to me and have all helped me get my feet wet to a much higher degree, and they've all offered me solid advice at one time or another, either through numerous phone calls, emails, or pm's. Thanks guys.

Once again, a big thank goes out to Kevin Brown for his time in the chat room.
