Applying Zaino after PC polishing w/ SSR series: wash first?

I've just completed a multi-step paint restoration on my black Buick Grand National:

  • SSR 3 + CCS yellow
  • SSR 2.5 + CCS white
  • SSR 1 + CCS white

Results are great (pics coming after the final step) and I'm going to finish with Zaino, which I've always used with great results on this finish. I have all of the polish off, but am curious as to whether I'll get best results by applying the Zaino directly over the unwashed surface OR washing first.

I'm guessing that some oils remain even after my microfiber toweling and have know base of knowledge on whether I'd want them there filling the small imperfections or whether they'll foul up the Zaino application.

I'll call Sal Zaino with the same question and post the results, but thought I'd see what folks here are doing with this.

Thanks folks,

Scott

I imagine sal will tell you to wash the car first. if you don't to wash the car you could do an ipa wipe down which will get rid of any remaining oils/polish residue.

Thanks! Do you dilute the IPA before applying it to the finish or is the drug store formula the correct mix?

Other thoughts welcome!

One of the things I like is Zaino All In One for this purpose. I apply with a white LC pad and the PC on speed 4.5 - 5. Takes me maybe 10-15 minutes to do the whole car with this and it 1.) cleans most if not all of what may be left behind and 2.) is a great foundation for Z polish to follow and 3.) less labor intensive than a wash and full dry. If you don't have ZAIO a good Iso wipedown may be adequate as well. The ratio I use is 1:1 i.e. 50% alcohol to 50% distilled water.

Folks at Zaino confirmed the need for a very clean oil-free surface, but suggested that a simple wash with Dawn would be plenty to remove the oil-based remnants of the SSR series. Like the posters above, also suggested that IPA could be used as an alternative.

Thanks,

Scott
