Anyone know of a good rat/mouse deterant?

Wow! You sure made San Diego sound like an inviting place to visit! Your description sounds more like Australia and their once a decade mouse/rat population explosion.:-?

I just dont want you guys moving here and becomming my competition :D

No seriously its so much a problem that the city will come out and start posioning them . I think its really cruel myself .

One year I was dogsitting for my friends and for 3 days I was picking up dead and half dying rats all over their yard and the dogs were running around with rats them in their mouths .The city had come out and posioned them before they left for vacation.

I have rat stories that will give you nightmares LOL:eek:

FWIW, I once had a coworker tell me they loaded up their boat with bars of Ivory soap before taking it out of the Mississippi river for the winter - without critter issues. YMMV...

I've had a few rat encounters too. The movie theater I managed was infested with them. The only way we were able to get rid of them was to use poison. Personally, since I consider rats to be disgusting, disease-ridden animals, I somewhat indifferent to the cruelty thing. But hey, that's just me.;)

I have a couple of those 'haveahart" live traps and usually work well to catch and relocate . She has got the live traps, also a different kind .

(Rats are amazingly smart though. One year I set 2 traps outside with peanut butter ,shut off my indoor lights and waited and watched . To my horror about half a dozen all sized rats came out and the little ones went in the big trap and stole the peanut butter without getting caught. The larger ones went in the smaller traps and since half their body was out of the cage the door didnt trap them either and got their peanut butter and ran.At that point I felt defeated and knew they had won !i eventually lured them away from house by throwing sunflower seeds out into the street. My nieghbors would kill me if they knew:D )

Anyway this time its definetely mice by the size of the droppings.

BTW in case anyone doesnt know this ...........if you see empty snail shells sitting on top an engine its a sign mice have been there. They like to snack on snails!

there's one deterrant thats beter than a cat... mice and rats are a snakes delicacy. have fun

Unfortunately, that can lead to other problems. I just "inherited" a 2001 Kia Sportage that was very poorly treated. One of the first things I did was pull out the A/C - Heater Blower. It included, mouse nests pulled from other locations in the car. Feces, Urine, food left overs and a partially decomposed snake. The snake was fairly large, so, I still have alot of work to do to rid the car of that smell.

A friend found the outside air intake of his Kia, and fitted it with steel mesh. I may do the same thing.

That sounds pretty nasty! Good luck!

In the past when storing my car I have had mice problems and now I use moth balls and have not had a issue for years. Not sure how they will work outside or under the hood. I am curious as to why the rats are coming into the garage. If there garbage there or dog food. Possibly remove the source, give a good clean and most of all Good luck

Good point! No garbage but the recycle boxes, paper ect... there .I will have to look to see if there is food paper items . Funny how some things work for some people like the moth balls . I saw rat droppings on my stored van seats ,so I cleaned them up and put moth balls next to them and wrapped the seats in a tarp . Well , one week later we had a big storm and the tarp blew off and rats had chewed the heck out of the seats and the moth balls were right next to it . !:out:I was so mad!@-) LOL
