Age of autopians

I'll be 56 in June. Got my first set of wheels when I was 16: '68 BSA 441 Victor. First thing I did (after I learned to ride it) was take it apart and clean it!

19. Had to wax my Miata for my dad to allow me to bring it to school. After the first wax job, I really had to just go all the way.

21, started at 15 when I got my learner's permit. Back when dish sponges, dawn, and a bath towel sounded like a quality wash job to me.

I'm 41 and started the same way, except the bath towels were stolen from the high school gym! Dawn was the only choice in the winter because the parts store didn't carry car wash soap in the winter. Really got interested 8 years ago when we bought a used Benz from Joe Myers Toyota in Houston. They did a really nice job of detailing it.

I am 42, and like the majority answering this post, I too was a "Wash Noobie". Oh yea, I thought I knew what a wash was; water with soap, cotton undershirt and a terry clothe towel. (Now I know where the swirls came from!).

After buying some new vehicles this year, joining Autopia this summer, gaining a tremendous amount of knowledge from everyone's feedback and after spending about 4K on detailing products and equipment I am now learning what washing a car is all about.

If I may share a story, a co-worker recently purchased a new 335i (Black on Black). He chose to use a "Car brush" to wash the vehicle. Needless to say, with the softcoat stories I have seen here, I knew his problem before he showed me. In four hoursm we brought the car back from the abyss. I was proud of myself and happy when i saw the relief in my coworker's eyes!

Bravo to all of you who have taken th etime to answer my questions/requests and I want you to know that I try to "pay it forward" on your behalf, out of respect.

Thanks!

Tad

21. Got my car at 17, found Autopia at 18, and I haven't been the same since. I don't want to think about how car/detailing crazy I'm going to be when reach my 30's and I have more money than I have now.

56. Just started in detailing my own car last year. I have in the past did a good wash job and hand wax with OTC. Learing a lot from reading now have a PC and bought some waxes that were talked about on this site. Learing something every time I log on to this site. Would like to thank all the people on here. THANKS.

i'm 58. i've been "detailing" my cars since i was 16. before that i cleaned and waxed my fathers cars, he always bought nice cars. i was always known for the way my cars were meticulously taken care of and i still have that reputation. i just can't drive a dirty car. i'll admit i have learned alot from this and other detail sites as far as what products are out there, so my detailing has gotten tweaked for the better. thanks to everyone for sharing your knowledge.

I'm 22 and this is my story.

I was about to turn 18 when I got my 03 Mazda 6, I was obsessed with keeping it clean. That meant regular trips through the drive through wash that gave a nice student discount, right? Once I saw what I had done, horrendous swirls, I decided I had to fix it. Picked up some 3M swirl mark remover but never had a chance to use it, I totaled the car while it was in the mail.

Since I got my new car in May 05, I've kept it waxed and done everything I can to keep it swirl mark free. It's just started to become an obsession though, as I want to find the perfect shine for when I get rid of it.

Here it is after it's last clay, polish and wax:

38 - I have loved keeping my cars clean since I bought my grandparents 1981 Sky Blue Cutlass Supreme with rally wheels in 1987. I thought I was really something in 1996 when I used the Meg's 3 Step process on our red metallic Blazer. Realized I knew very little when I bought my first black car - 2004 G35 coupe. Realized I knew even less when I used a harsh 3m rubbing compound with my new PC about 3 months later. Ha. I learned what hazing was at that point. Now, I think I know enough not to be dangerous anymore all thanks to those of you who share your knowledge. I hope to have my 5 year old detailing (or at least washing) with me soon.

33 and from new jersey. I have been detailing cars since I was 15 when my father got me started by helping him, Then it progressed to my first car after I got my license, and Now I am a weekend warrior and do it for extra cash on the side.
