Is this effective by hand, as I dont have a polisher, but I do have some swirls and very minor scratches.

Or would I be better with Scratch X?

Advise/suggestions welcome

I've tried Scratch X and it didn't do anything.....I'm waiting for good weather to try some Zymol cleaner/ swirl remover that was recommended by a guy at work that had a similar experience with scratches on his car...is non-abrassive.....

Good luck maybe having a clear coat on my car is why it didn't work....

Scratch X is DESIGNED to be used by hand. It breaks down like #83 DACP if you work it correctly. I suggest using a terry or microfiber applicator for application as it will give the Scratch X more "bite". Work the product until it is nearly dry and has almost disappeared from the surface. Repeat until you are satisfied...if that does not work step up to #82 Swirl Free Polish and see if that does the trick.

Oh believe me I used it as directed, but I hardly saw any results and I was afraid of going into the paint by keep on using it on the same areas, therefore my fear of making the scratches worse, but...it's my personal experience so it may work for someone else...

It wasn't because you have a clearcoat. 90% of cars out today have CC's. The Zymol cleaner isn't going to do anything because its non-abrasive, obviously. My guess is that you just need something that would require a buffer/polisher to remove.

I've been able to cover the scratches or make them less noticeable with Turtlewax color match and a buffer, but since then I have purchased a PC, NXT and Zymol, but I guess Im getting off the subject ...Hopefully my combination will either fix or cover more of these scratches...but the weather isn't cooperating forecast is snow this week ;)..got to love the North East.....:)

You don't need Zymol cleaner wax, its not going to do anything. Get some DACP or equivalent and remove them.

Greg...DACP?? a link would help so i can locate it locally...i have time since the snow will last 'till the weekened...thanks...

I don't have a polisher. The first time I used Scratch X to take care of my swirl marks, I also thought it didn't do anything. Then after I read more here, I used the Scottwax technique and what fellow autopian Ray showed me (terry towel folded, put moderate pressure, and rub until you feel you are generating 'warmth' with friction, going left right up down diagnoal about 30seconds). It almost completely reduced the swirl marks (I said almost because you could still see a little spider webbing).

Scratch X does work, and it's on the same abrasive level as DACP, but doing it by hand still takes a lot of rubbing to achieve the effect.

Thanks for the replys,

So have any of you used #9 by hand, if so, whats the best method/ products to use, i.e Terry Cloth towel, MF, Foam applicator?

^^I have used #9 by hand, but found it to be too mild to do anything. If you want to try #9 by hadn, the best thing to use is still a good clean terry cotton towel becuse it has more 'bite'.

Can you use the ScratchX with a machine?

When I did it by hand, it seems to have covered the scratch, but I can still see it.

Schmohey...Yes, Scratch-X can be applied by PC. Mike Philips over at Showcargarage.com uses that technique. (He is the Meguiars expert.) I've done this many times myself with success.

HEK....One thing I found out when I began using a PC and scratch removal products was that a second or third application was often necessary. Of course this depends on the severity of the scratches. Don't think the product isn't working after the first try. It's best to start out using a product with light cleaning abilities and mild abrasiveses. You then can move up to something with more "bite" if the scratches still remain.

Also, using a speed between 3.5 and 4.5 was better than 6 or higher. Too high a speed can induce additional scratches.

Hope this helps. Keep us posted on your progress.

Hey,

ScratchX is a very good swirl remover. When used with a 100% cotton terry toweling; the loops give added bite thereby reducing the marring. However, it will not remove deeper marks. For that, something stronger like Meguiar's #83 Dual Action Cleaner Polish (DACP) will be needed.

Meguiar's #83 DACP

You will need to use your PC set to speed 5 and a Meguiar's W-8006 Polishing Pad. Work the DACP until only a light dust/residue remains. (You need to make sure that the Diminishing Abrasives are thoroughly broken down). Remove the residue with a good quality microfiber cloth.

Good luck and keep us posted!!

Hey Russ,

Just trying to stay warm! :D

Actually, the weather has warmed up quite a bit lately! So much so, that once it was above freezing this morning I went out and did a 6 hour detail! It was still cold though!!

I still love #26 even though there are so many choices! Today however, I chose to use: #83 + #82 + #81 + NXT Tech Wax on a bright Silver Toyota. The results were fantastic!! :) I will be posting pics and a small write up on Show Car Garage!!

Do you have any pics from today?

Tim
