845 or ? for Optics (Depth and Shine)

BMW335i

New member
Mainly, I am looking for a very deep shine with great gloss. Basically the best looking optically. I have bought 845 but have yet to use it, (still need a polish to prep the paint). Now I know 845 is very good, but I understand its considered a durability wax after some searching. What other options do I have that are better than 845 in this department. I have silver metallic paint.

845 will be fine on silver. I find it a bit bright on black (sort of like S100/P21S) but that is a great look on silver, IMO.

I agree with Diesel, OCW is killer on silver. Very wet glow!

How do you *know* that 845 is good? Tested it? Yet you want "better" product(s)?

How do you define the attributes of the specific appearance you looking for? What are your reference points to know what is better and how do you compare?

Look, as of now, your only direction is a silver BMW 335i with minor swirls. And you don't have (or wanna spend) bucks for a PC & pads. How about moving on?

How about spending, say, 50 bucks for different waxes to know how they look specifically and which do you like and WHY?

We can obviously suggest hundreds of combinations, but when you don't know what we are talking about - you won't be able to decide.

Your BMW needs to be protected now (winter). You can prep it properly in the spring. Until then, you can gather some knowledge and a general feel about waxes. Let's face it: you are absolute newbie in car care. Yet you want to start with one of the most sophisticated processes - without being able to prep perfectly (no tools & experience). Does it sound logical?

You HAVE the 845 already. Use it alone and tell us how it went. Or use more stuff to see the differences. Play. A keyboard and a monitor won't solve your problem, and you'll just mirror someone else's opinion without having your own.

use the 845 now and get a PC to remove swirls in the spring. There are better products than 845 but if you don't prep the paint you won't be able to really see the difference.

This will lead BMW to further confusion.

So:

845 is a benchmark product in spreadability, beading/contact angles, carnauba blend durability and raw protection. Its look is and always will be subjective, but it is a bright, wet, deep looking wax. And most importantly: the fact that some products look more reflective or deeper, is just an optical attribute, not a difference in quality.

In hot environments it might get beaten by some sealants, but it will protect better against bird poo or acid rain/sprinklers than any sealant out there. 845 has a very fine balance of looks/protection/ease of use and bang for the buck. High-end product; period.

interesting, might have to try this out

I actually use 845 on a metallic silver VW, very similar to the BMW paint. It's my fiance's jetta and it rarely gets washed, most of the time it's an auto wash when it does get it.

845 makes the paint look very bright and clear, it beads like mad, even with a visible layer of road film on it. Best of all it's ridiculously durable and even the auto wash chemicals and Ohio roads can't touch it.

BMW335i- One of the dangers of this site is the temptation to second-guess everything, especially your products...it's that search-for-the grail effect.

I'm one *very* particular guy and I'm *very* familiar with colors such as yours (we always have numerous vehicles in that color). If you're not satisfied with how it turns out I sincerely doubt that the 845 will be to blame.

Im getting tired of his threads. Maybe im wrong but it seems like he is starting a new thread every few hours (ya im exagerating).

Seems to me he is scared to actually touch his car.

Sorry, I have stopped making threads since last night its just that people keep bumping them. I realize I made a lot. I don't want to annoy people!

BTW, I have decided to take the intiative on my paint. I am going to look back at my old threads and go with what was said. Thanks.

One thing I have learned from this site is you have to go with what makes you happy. Not everyone is going to like the same products. Sure there are a couple of products that a lot of people use and like, but not everyone likes the same product for every situation.

Autopia seems to go through phases. I remember when i first got on here a few years ago, everyone said stay away from Zaino. Now Zaino is all the rage again around here. And of course it deserves that rage, excellent products. Zaino has put a lot of effort into making their products easier to use. And for the longest time I have heard that Collinite is a protection wax only, pain to use and pain to get off once the winter is over and you want to go with some better looking summer wax. And all the talk about it not looking that great, but it protects good. Then all of the sudden that started to change. Some people on here starting using it becuase they went against the grain and found that the rumors for the most part were not true. The ease of use was good, durability was good, and the look was very attractive. Sure this wax may not be a Souveran to most people, but to some it's more attractive than Souveran. I personally am not a real big fan of Souveran, but that's me. Other people on here use it and love it, but that's what make this detail game so much fun. And at the same time it can get you in trouble. You really have to find what you like.

BTW, I just used 845 for the first time over this past weekend. I will most likely be getting rid of all the other waxes I have. Including my Zaino, Trade Secret, Natty's, and all my sealants. This wax has really made a difference in how i view a wax to suit my needs. It's easy to apply, easier to remove, and the beading is just insane. Doesn't mean much, but it makes it easier to wash. And for someone like myself who works 6 days a week right now, I need a wax like this. But even if i worked 5 days, I would still use it. This wax is truly in a league by itself. Not saying it's better than anything out there, but in my eyes it's perfect for what I look for in a wax.

I *almost* feel the same way. It has, to my eyes, a great look, excellent durability(which doesn't seem to shorten in summer(heat) or in winter(snow), and ease of use. It doesn't have to be used over a 100% filler/oil free finish, and it is cheap. I could almost use *just* 845 for a sealant/wax on everything, but half the fun in detailing is trying out new stuff.

I wonder if the OP actually has tried his 845 yet.

When I saw you wanted "deep shine" and "great gloss" the first thing that came to mind was Finish Kare 1000P. Depth looks like another coat of clear and it gives a super gloss finish. I don't know if it has the durability of 845, few lsp's do, but it is an easy to use long lasting lsp. To my eye it looks better on silver than it does on darker colors.

well said! i have been using IW since 1974, yes i said 1974. it is a great product and sooo easy to apply!!!:xyxthumbs

I've been using 845 almost exclusively in my mobile detailing biz. I, as well as my clients, live on a barrier island where the salt-air coats everything. So when I was considering a wax to use, the Collinite 845 was a sure contender. I also have Natty's Blue, Meg GC, as well as a couple sealants (NXT, EX-P).

I now use the 845 on all vehicles, including a black Cayenne and it looks great. Topping the 845 with some OCW really adds to the depth of the reflection.
