I remember John DeLorean on the Tonight show talking about all you needed was a steel wool pad to buff his new car.
The obvious exception is on polished stainless where all the grain has been polished out and it has a mirror or chrome like appearance. For that or even chrome I would try something non-abrasive to clean it before I tried even 0000 steel wool. 0000 SW is great stuff to have around and I'd never be without it, but it can leave marring on chrome, ss, or glass if you're not careful.
