Rasky’s Auto Detailing: 2012 Tacoma, Polish & Opti-Coat

Rasky's Auto Detailing
So not only is this truck my first job of 2012, but it’s also the first of many detail collaborations to come with my friend and fellow detailer, Justin (Phishy4). It’s been a long time since I’ve worked alongside another detailer and I must say it was nice banging out a car in half the time it normally takes, leaving more time to relax on the weekends.

The owner, a client of Justin’s, recently purchased this new Taco and almost went with one of those dealer applied interior and exterior protection packages until Justin informed him he be paying for an overpriced wax and fabric protectant. After explaining the differences between the dealer applied junk and Opti-Coat the owner was sold and we scheduled the vehicle shortly after he took delivery.

The truck had arrived fairly clean but it was apparent that there was some light wash induced marring and that it would need a good 1-step polish to get her looking the way she should. I did my best to capture the wash induced marring but you know how it goes with light colored metallic. ;)

Process:

Wash – ONR
Wheels/tires – OPC and various brushes
Clay – Blackfire clay and ONR as lube
Paint correction – Optimum Polish II via GG6 and 5” Optimum MF polishing pads
Glass – Meguiar’s D120
Chrome – Mothers Chrome polish
Tire dressing – Meguiar’s Hyper Dressing
Opti-Coat applied to all paint & trim
Scotch Guard Fabric Protectant applied to carpets, matts, and seats

Cropped section of the above helps see the defects a little better, they were a lot worse than the pics show

Thanks for looking, :)

beautiful work, beautiful color, beautiful depiction of the swirls, and beautiful finale.

so does opticoat obviate any need for trim protectants?

did you opticoat the plastic bed?

when I coated my aunt's car, I was afraid that the trim would be too shiney but the OC takes on the characteristics of the material it is applied to so once it dried, the trim looked the way it looked before I applied the OC.

bottom line, if you've got faded trim, OC isn't going to make it look new again

Thanks guys! We used 6cc on this vehicle. ;)

I've had it on my trim since July 2010 and it still looks new with a very slight gloss...so as of right now it sure seems like a permanent solution and I've seen no ill effects to date. :inspector:

For the trim on this one we coated the side mirrors, door handles, front grill, rear bumper cover, and the tops of the bed rails. ;)

Nice work, the truck looks good. That scotch guard fabric protectant is on my list to buy.

The truck looks great. It looks like your using a LC backing plate with the MF pads what speed were you using? And did you use any water misting?

Hey Chad congrads on the extra help and as always your details always come out Rockin !! Hey, I noticed in one of the pics when you were applying Opti, looked like you were using the block and suede or felt from C-quartz verses the foam applicator.....any particular reason?

Thanks! Comment from A member on AG...

You can buy Scotchgard and better protectors in bulk at carpet cleaning distributor that are cheaper and work better. Instead of buying a consumer version which is way over-priced. Jon-Don Protectors Many dilute with water so you get much more product.

Thanks! Not sure what BP Justin was using but I was using the Meguiar's BP. No water misting...

Does the Scotch protectant have any smell? If it's pleasant, I'll have to try that out!

It smells very strong, almost glue like and you will want to use it in a well ventilated area. It was aired out by the morning though.

Nice job. The truck turned out great. Did you use an air brush to apply Opti-Coat anywhere?

Thanks! No air brush used on this job.

6cc?!

you're kidding!

Nope, 6-8cc is about average for me. Keep in mind we did not do the glass or wheels on this one.

That's why I asked and glad I did. I thought I might be using too much (10ml on a med/full size sedan).

Thanks Rasky.

When I first started using it I was averaging about 10cc as well. ;)

Thanks Wendell!

I've been using the CarPro applicator for a while now as it seem to work a lot better for my method of application. Less heavy areas and a more uniform application. It's also better for getting close to edges.

Nice work Chad. I'd love to visit and watch the Opti Coat application sometime.

Randy

Thanks Randy! I'll have to let you know when the next job comes in. It's really not hard and I'm sure if you give it a try you will have no issues. You can allows check out my Youtube video too ;)

;)

Thanks Rasky I was basing it off of the color, just a guess. I've only used the OPT MF disk once and am still trying to figure out what speed or range is best. I found around 4 to be good but that was only on the one car.

Solid work! As luck would have it i have a black tacoma this weekend i plan to opti coat. I am glag to see it work well on the truck. One question, did you find the paint to be soft and and/or easy to correct?

Really nice outcome Chad! Beautiful color on that truck and the polish / opti guard really give it that nice glassy look!
