I would rather be trying to prove self defense to six of my peers rather than being carried to my grave by six of my peers.

You could also spend 6 years to life for making the wrong decision...using deadly force.

This is absolutely the case. In effect you support my feeling to the tee. I want to be able to make the decision as opposed to someone else potentially making the decision how my life will end. I fully realize the responsibility associated with carrying. Furthermore I take that responsibility seriously. I think anyone who makes the decision to carry needs to willingly commit to be appropriately trained. To not do so is a disaster waiting to happen. As for me and my experience, the people with whom I associate feel the same way. They've gone through the same type of training that I have and we use particular care when shooting or carrying. We feel the same uneasiness expressed in this thread when we get around other people at the range or hillside that don't have the same standards. By the way it doesn't take a great deal of observation to determine whether one handles a firearm safely or not. When I'm around this type of person and I'm not comfortable, I leave. You can't just leave when people are carrying (I understand BB's concern), you don't even know they are or at least you better not, if you do, they are breaking the law by not properly concealing the weapon.

This is where I'll get in trouble with my fellow gun lovers. With the freedom comes the responsibility and obligation. I believe everyone should have the choice available to carry or not. That said, I believe that the classes offered to provide certification to CCW holders to be totally inadequate. In my state you don't even have to shoot in order to get the permit. I best be careful here or someone will mistake me as a liberal.:D

I've been around guns all my life, I casn't speak for the age that I first shot one but I know I had to of been a youngin'. Where I currently live I don't see the need to carry a concealed weapon, but know a few folks who do. I do carry a pocketknife with me a lot of the time (Mostly my sweet Leatherman I found :rockon Which comes in handy quite often, and no not the knife part!), I've never had to brandish it but have had a couple times where I was glad I had to at least have it on me. Hell the Leatherman I carry is heavy eough itself that if I were to lob it at anyone, it'd probably distract them long enough for me to get them on the ground :notme:

Anyway since this topic is about guns and not Leathermen products, I digress from that. It's been probably 3+ years since I've fired a firearm (I think...), mainly because I haven't been hunting in a while. But lately I've had a knack to grab a box of clay pigeons and go out to my grand[a's with my 12 guage to remind myself how damn good of a shot I am :D I just want to make sure I'm up-to-date on my skills and remember how to care for them. Considering my backround I feel a bit embarrassed that I've kinda forgot what I know about them :crazy2:

First I'd like to say this thread is probably inappropriate for a detailing forum :notme:

Why?

It's an off topic thread in the off topic area of the forum and obviously people have strong opinions about it even us detailers.

I have been asked to kill this thread but I don't see why.:hmmm:

If I kill this one on the grounds that it has nothing to do with detailing then I might as well take the off topic areas off the site.

What am I missing? Why should I close this thread?

I don't see a reason to close it, as long as it doesn't turn to name calling and nasty in that way...I for one like a good debate...

I own and carry cause I can. Civilians must protect themsleves from evil people and governments. Politicians and their legislation can't. They are part of the problem.

Because some disagree with my position on a right to carry.

But that is OK at least the supreme court agrees with me. :D

Bart...I've read all of this thread...and no one didn't disagree with you to carry...me included...I only stated that for those that are going to carry that they, liked Gearhead pointed out have the proper training to use a gun in a public environment...

We all have our opinion but we know what they say about opinions. :rofl

mgerencs :welcome: you picked a good thread to make your first post.:D

should we change this site to debate city:confused:
I thought the reason we all come to this site is to share our common interest of DETAILING ...
Should we talk about abortion? That'll get Sheila more involved :notme: or how about race or religion :inspector:
nothing can be more debated than these topics  or maybe immigration :wall

Bart like it has been said before there are people and places that absolutely need to be armed and many others who can not comprehend the responsibility that goes with the privilege of a free society and it's benefits ... with every right comes with some limitations ... training, registration, etc..

I personally don't have a gun but I think it would be prudent to have one for protection.

We live under a stable government but there is no guarantee that things can't change through some extreme circumstances. We feel safe where we live and most people are very civil the way things are now, BUT that can change and if it does I would like to know I can protect my family.

I just watched the movie Blood Diamond again yesterday. That is a pretty sobering movie to watch seeing whole towns/villages being slaughtered and children being stolen because they couldn't defend themselves. Does that happen here? No. Could it? It's not likely but I would rather be armed if it ever did.

If you want to start off topic threads on those topics I won't stop you. I'm not gonna tell people they can't debate these issues here. As long as our no bashing policy is followed along with our other rules... go for it. I doubt all detailing discussion will be over taken by these threads. If it does then I might step in but until then debate all you want.

I personally find it interesting to see how my fellow detailers view other topics besides detailing.

I don't have a problem with that other than that is the camel sticking his nose under the tent or to put it another way this would be the first step toward more and more regulations in an effort to keep people from owning and carrying a firearm.

First would be training then a high priced permit and if you carry you must have the permit and any other thing that the anti gun crowd can think of.

Most people who support gun laws base it on what the Liberal Electronic press tells them.

Example is how a lot of people support the assault rifle ban but don't know what an assault rifle really is they go with what they are told by the media and it is WRONG.

The federal firearms act was passed in 1934 outlawing owning a fully automatic weapon without the 200 dollar federal stamp.

Since then tens of thousands have owned them I have several myself and since 1934 not ONE legally registered machine gun has been used in the commission of a crime.

So what you support is a law that is to be the solution to a problem that don't exist.

These are well meaning people but by relying on the media leaves them without enough correct info to make an intelligent decision

so you mean if I start :bonk: everyone the thread stops :D
