Trim Restorer Showdown: BLACKFIRE VS. SONAX!

The trim on my 1998 Honda Civic has seen better days. Trying to find trim product that will a) help revive it and b) last more than a month or two has been a challenge.

Enter the latest round of competitors BLACKFIRE’s Total Trim & Tire Sealant vs. SONAX’s Plastic Restorer Gel:

BFVSS_zpsjjocfkpu.jpg

To keep this comparison fair, I’ll be dividing the hard plastic trim on my civic in half - right down the middle. The driver's side will receive SONAX’s Plastic Restorer Gel while the passengers side will receive BLACKFIRE’s Total Trim & Tire Sealant. Each side will receive enough coats to revive and darken the trim as evenly as possible.

Prior to application all trim surfaces were thoroughly scrubbed clean with APC 3:1, rinsed, and dried:

Let the showdown begin!

First up SONAX Plastic Restorer Gel:

From PBMG’s copy for SONAX Plastic Restorer Gel:

Restores, protects, and renews plastic exterior trim!

SONAX Plastic Restorer Gel is a thick, drip-free cream that revitalizes faded, discolored exterior plastic trim. SONAX Plastic Restorer Gel is formulated using microscopic nano particles that penetrate deeply into the plastic trim, providing long-lasting protection and long-term preservation. SONAX Plastic Restorer Gel is not limited to black trim – use it on any color trim and watch as it brings the surface back to like-new condition!

SONAX isn’t kidding when they say this is thick drip-free gel! Check out this cling time!!

Wow look at how quickly SONAX darkens my front bumpers lower trim! Here’s what a single application looks like:

I’m grinning from ear to ear with the results and briefly consider abandoning the trim showdown with BLACKFIRE all together! How could BF beat SONAX????

I quickly move to coating the remaining driver's side trim w/ Sonax.

Next up BLACKFIRE’s Total Trim & Tire Sealant:

From PBMG’s copy for BLACKFIRE Total Trim & Tire Sealant

Restores, protects, and enhances exterior trim of any color!

BLACKFIRE Total Trim & Tire Sealant is the solution to an issue that plagues almost every vehicle manufactured in the last 30 years – dull, faded, and discolored plastic exterior trim. This thick, gel-like formula penetrates deep into the pores of plastic, rubber, and vinyl exterior trim, restoring the finish to factory-new condition. A traditional trim dressing might last a week or two if you’re lucky; BLACKFIRE Total Trim & Tire Sealant provides MONTHS of durable protection. Use it on tires as a long-lasting, waterproof dressing!

I can’t help but notice the description for BF TT&TS sounds almost identical to SONAX PRG. Given this, I’m feeling very confident this will be a true Apples to Apples comparison.

BF TT&TS has more of a cream like consistency when compared to Sonax PRG's stout gel:

Overall it takes a few applications of BF TT&TS to produce the same level of depth on the passenger's side trim as SONAX did for the driver’s side. Again my lower bumper trim coated with BF on the left, and SONAX on the right:

Up on my windshield cowl:

SONAX side:

BF side:

(BF TT&TS slight streaks disappeared after a quick buff)

Ok, now here where the showdown takes an unexpected turn…

After the above application, the car sat untouched in my garage over the Labor Day weekend. Late Monday night I’m out in the garage and don’t quite believe what I’m seeing. Take a close look at my front bumper trim after 2 uninterrupted days:

Umm what happen to the SONAX? Where’d it go? Did it fall off? Did my trim eat it up? In contrast, my application of BF TT&TS on the passenger's side is exactly where I left it.

Back up on the windshield cowl, the difference between the two products is a little more subtle:

(left side BF/ right side SONAX)

Down on the under door driver's side trim, the only evidence of SONAX remaing is this single area:

Whereas BF still looks nice and even on the passenger's side:

I'm gobsmacked at this dramatic turn of events to say the least!

The very next day, it rained and the resulting water beading confirmed the levels of product remaining, or should I say lack there of! (close up on the left - wide shot on the right)

SONAX:

BF:

Notice how BF is producing nice tight uniform beads whereas the SONAX side beads look more like amoebas? Also check out the amount of water sitting at the bottom of the cowl - notice how much less there is on the BF side???

For SONAX to fail so quickly after application is a total let down.

Without any question:

I have to say these results honestly surprised me. After such an impressive start from SONAX I wasn’t expecting BLACKFIRE TT&TS to come from behind and win this comparison test in such a dramatic fashion.

Hope you enjoyed this comparison test and dramatic results :)

Thanks for reading!

Wow, seems like there was a lot of volatiles in the Sonax that just evaporated. Great test.

PS After this, I hope the big announcement tomorrow isn't that PBMG is buying Sonax...

Great review Angus!! Thanks so much for doing this.

It's so weird that the Sonax just disappeared and you didn't even drive the car! At least we now know we won't be wasting our money on this product.

Thanks! I agree, SONAX was just a little too good right out of the gate to be true. I'll give it this however, it has a wonder lemon-lime aroma.

Great review Angus!! Thanks so much for doing this.

You're welcome! SONAX makes a lot of great stuff. But clearly this isn't one of them...

Great comparison !!!!

Wonder what would have happened if you gave sonax 2-3 coats.

Do you have an old jeep around to play with ??? Reason I ask, is Jeeps have some sort of weird plastic composition. It doesn't seem to hold anything (it's own color or restore products)

I bet it's that type of plastic or trim. I tried a lot of different trim dressings and restoration products on my personal car and settled with SONAX Plastic Restorer Gel as my favorite. It looks great and has held up the longest on the trim on my car. I'm sure I have pictures around here somewhere. There are just so many different types of trim, I can see why results can vary.

But thanks for the review Angus! Another perspective is always better.

Thanks, Ron!

During the initial application period, both sides received multiple coats of product. Neither side was a one and done application. Once I discovered SONAX's disappearing act I added another coat in an effort to try and revive it. But it didn't work. And in-fact the rain shots were taken after the follow-up application - clearly it didn't make any difference.

Interesting about jeeps - didn't know that. I'll have to keep an eye out for one I can play with.

Thanks! And I'm sure you're right, Vega. Glad to hear SONAX works on your Sable in the strong FL sun :)

Thanks for the laugh. That line...funny. I was looking at the pic and was wondering the same thing!

I had been working with a friend on his 4Runner's fender flares. Tried 3 products before he gave up and just painted them. The Chemical Guys stuff lasted, what, maybe a day. The trim thing from Wolf's (applied the same time) lasted at least 3 weeks.

Thanks for posting this comparision

Excellent review! I have been wanting to try the BF Trim and Tire Sealant since it released.

Hmmm that is an interesting observation Ray. I have a '93 Cobra sitting in my garage with smooth black plastic trim waiting to go under the knife. I am really wondering what would work best for it.

So, so true. There's even the parts that are two types of material, where they co-mold it or something, like some of the GM wiper cowls where the middle is hard and the ends are rubbery, or some of the Hyundai side window trim where it goes from spongy to a harder rubber.

Great review. I have yet to see anything beat Blackfire. I've been using it for over 6 months now (AG BOGO) and really love the stuff. I've quit using anything else.

My pleasure! Glad you enjoyed it and that my sense of humor came across.

Cheers! What trim products have you used so far on the cobra?

Thanks! As good as BF is, my favorite is still Wolfgang ETS. Easy to apply, last a super long time, and darkens trim nicely.

None yet. Just now finishing up the with the paint. This thing has a ton of body panel sizes and elevations that is taking a ton of time. But anyhow, it has about three different types of trim on it. A black rubber type on the doors, hard glossy black trim near the hood, and a textured dull black plastic on the trunk. The trim is in really good shape and looking at my trim products...I might need to upgrade to some types of sealants.

I wish the BF was a little cheaper to try. I've just tested quite a few products on my Ford Explorer trim. PERL looks the best for me.

PM me your address and I'll make up sample bottles for you guys to try BF TT&TS. :)

*3 Week Update*

BF TT&TS is still going strong:

Where as any trace of SONAX is long gone:

Angus..It looks like all the rain killed the PERL overnight on my Explorer's flares.
I'll post how the BF works after all the rain passes.
