Zaino: Can You Go "Too Thin?"

Thin coats are always stressed with Zaino or Klasse, but I'm curious if there is a "too thin." Yesterday I ZFXed for the first time and mixed a full ounce of Z-5, expecting to get around 3-3.5 coats. I got 3 and still have around 1/2 oz left!

I know I am not missing spots and am applying product to the whole surface because there is a slight haze on the paint if you look at it from the right angle. So should I just mix half an ounce of Z2/Z5 and do 3 coats with that or should I be applying thicker coats?

I'll bring my car over and you can use the left-over 1/2 oz on my car. :D

I will be trying the ZFX this weekend myself and I also fear that 1oz of polish will give more than 3 coats on the convertible. I do not want to waste the polish and adding more polish per coat will only indirectly waste the Z. I do not think you can apply Z too thinly. I appreciate your post because of your experience I will only mix 1/2 oz of polish and see what happens.

No, you really can't go too thin with Zaino as long as every area is covered. As soon as Z2/Z5 touches the surface, it begins bonding. A very light layer is all that's required to bond, anything more is just wasting polish which takes longer to dry and does nothing for greater bonding.

It really depends on the size of the car as to how many coats of ZFX you can get per ounce of polish. I can get about 3 coats per ounce on my car...but there's a lot of paint to cover!

As long as you do not miss any paint I think you did SWELL Putey!!!!!

With the color fo my truck it is very hard to see where I put the Z at so I tend to probably put it on thicker than most but it is only $$$ .......And what the Heck.........IT seems Z dries the same color as my truck so I have to get at all angles to see where I have put it when applying as well as removing.

I find it easier to see on overcast days then bright sunny days.

It's fine as long as you are sure that you covered the whole car. i don't think it is considered wasting any if it takes up to 1/2 ounce to do an entire car....that is still 16 coats per bottle!

Anyhow, I dont have the time or patience to go THAT thin and keep looking to see if I have even coverage. I average about 1/3 - 1/2 ounce per coat and can apply on my whole car in 10-20 minutes. It still dries fast and buffs off easy.......

I did my Honda Odyssey last week and used 2 ounces for two coats. I was afraid I wasn't getting enough on, but it sounds like I was using too much based on what you guys are saying.

My Ody is white so I was having a hard time telling if I had the entire surface covered. Am I using too much?????????

I was using the applicators from Zaino. Is there something better to use? It seems like you lose quite abit of polish in the foam applicator.

I started using the Zaino applicators. I did my 94 toyota extended cab, 2 coats with an ounce. I also have a 2002 Honda Odyssey. I may have done a bit better than you, but it took me at least 1.5 ounces to put on 2 coats.

Last weekend I switched to using a Viking foam applicator that another thread mentioned. I redid the truck, and got one coat with less than 1/2 ounce (I mixed 1/4 oz twice, and had enough left over to do the windows). I should mention that it seemed like the first time I did it it took the first 2/3 oz for the first coat on the truck, then the second coat went on with the last 1/3. I attributed it to the applicator soaking it up til it was saturated, and was told I was using too much. I think I was able to do a better job on thin coats with the foam applicator.

Mike_C try foam applicators. I agree with Turnip that you can get it thinner with the foam. They seem to soak up less then the cotton........Anyhoots the zaino applicators have foam inside them.

You just have to go by feel if it is there or not. I have a black car and only saw a <em class='bbc'>very[/i] light haze on the surface. On a white car I would not expect to see anything at all with thin coats.

I go over each spot more than once to make sure that after the very light z6 lube I have on the pad has evaporated and that the surface has z5/z2 on it. You can tell by the additional slickness of the paint by having polish on it.

So I guess it's okay to mix 1/2 oz Z5 or Z2 with 2 drops of ZFX?

I probably ought to read my instructions again. But.... I mixed 1/4 oz yesterday with 1 drop of ZFX. Everything seems to have worked OK (meaning it dried by the time I got the whole car applied, and it looks good.). I was mixing in a syringe, and only had enough space for 1/4 oz with room to shake.

I'm getting larger syringes, but for now mixing 1/4 oz at a time worked out pretty well, I didn't have a bunch left over, and the syringe allowed me to use every drop (unlike the bottles).

I do that all the time. 1/2 oz & 2 drops ZFX. I get 1 & 1/2 coat consistenly, and sometimes 2 full coats.

Lately there's a little change. I fill the bottle a little less than 1/2 oz (like 3mm lower) to minimize Z waste, and I apply thicker coats than usual because I can apply Z faster this way, and just do 1 coat and throw the rest of Z away.

Zaino is one of those products that less is actually better! That's what makes Z cheaper than other products.

Sounds like you got the Z method down pat, now how about coming by and using some Z on one of our cars.

Bill;) ;)
