Zaino and PC?

Hey folks,



As you can tell, I'm a newbie to the site, so forgive me if this has been covered before (search yielded neg results).



I am a long time endorser of Zaino products and use them religiously. Until now, all application and removal was done by hand.



That said, I'm looking at purchasing a PC 7336 this week. I know that most of you on here are firm believers in Meguiars products for the PC. What are your thoughts of the compatibility of Zaino and the PC? Pros ? cons? Why and why not?



Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

vtextc...I recently bought a PC 7336 at Lowes ($109), a Hook-It 5" plate, and some Meguairs 6.5" pads. The PC has made life easier in may ways. (very little vibration with this combo BTW)



It's great for using 3M Foam Pad Glaze, and other products like that.



I know that Sal Z. says it's okay to use a polisher to apply Zaino, but thinks that you waste too much product in the pad.



I have found that final step products (at least for me) are just as quickly applied and removed by hand. Plus, with a machine, you still have to cut in around mouldings, etc anyhow.
 
I've always applied Zaino by hand but I'm gonna try it by machine this weekend. BradE and a few others here apply it by machine and it works fine for them.

When I started with Zaino, I religiously followed the instructions on the website. Since I've learned more about detailing in general over the last few years, I've made decisions on how to use products based on experimentation and common sense, as well as mfrs. recommendations. Sal's admonition not to apply with a buffer? Ignore it, IMNSHO. I've had my best results with Zaino when it was applied with a dampened finishing pad (occasionally spritzed with Z6 to keep damp), on speed of about 3. The layer goes on extremely thin compared to doing it by hand, and in my experience, I use a great deal less Zaino when I use a machine (only about 1/4 to 1/3 oz per coat).



I've topped Z with carnauba before, too, and I never use 100% cotton for anything (MF all the way for me). Not a very good zealot, am I? :D

Thanks for all your help fellas. More and more, I'm beginning to think that the only advantage a PC has, if used with conventional products like Zaino, is merely time saving, and not all that much in that.



If the resulting differences in quality between elbow grease and PC are negligible, I'm debating now spending the money on the PC??

I think you're correct in that you won't see improved results by using Zaino with a PC, just more convenience (makes doing several layers in the same day when using ZFX a snap). That said, IMO, someday you're going to end up with swirls or marring on your paint that Z5 can't hide . . . that's when the PC will make the price of admission worthwhile. Trying to remove even mild swirls by hand is non-trivial; it takes time, patience, and a good deal of physical effort.



If you're at all serious about detailing being a continuing hobby, then I think you can't go far wrong spending money on a PC. However, since you're not looking to do any swirl or scratch removal at the moment, my suggestion would be to continue on with Z by hand, but start keeping an eye out for sales/rebates on the PC, or try to pick one up from eBay. When the price is right, snag one.
